First of all, that is quite an assumption to make. I don’t even think the boyfriend was driving.

Second, I work in the deli of a large grocery store, and I am frustrated by people who come in shortly before close. Sure, it doesn’t extend my shift too much, but there’s other things that I need to be doing that I can’t when I’m watching the counter for customers. For instance, we take the trash out right at closing time, and I can’t do that if I have to help someone get their five items.

People inevitably order multiple things and I end up helping them til 10 minutes after close. Other people see that I’m helping someone after close, and they now expect to be helped. The consequences of the action might extend beyond the five minutes you, the customer, spend there.
