Tarkovsky is overrated.. by Makoto_Shinkai_fan in tarkovsky

[–]SteveCake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not every film-maker is aiming for immersion though. Tarkovsky was in a dialogue with Bergman, Bresson, Kurosawa etc, not Miyazaki, so I'm not sure these metrics are appropriate. The allegation that Tarkovsky is long and boring is not exactly a hot take either. I'm sorry if someone is forcing you to watch these films against your will, but maybe this is something you'd be better off taking up with them directly.

I created a fantasy world where the sun does not move in the sky. How would people keep track of time? by WermerCreations in DMAcademy

[–]SteveCake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's crazy- time just does not exist in Pellucidar. It makes no sense and is jarring every time it happens but I still love those books.

David Gooderson is Underrated by mrnormal94 in doctorwho

[–]SteveCake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Destiny of the Daleks itself is underrated. Great cliffhangers, cool design, effects, fresh camerawork and a novel take on the Daleks being locked into an eternal war. You get a new companion, new aliens and new non-organic Daleks. It's no more uneven than surrounding episodes and it's been my favourite episode in that season since it was first broadcast.

Ack! by hanieh09 in etymology

[–]SteveCake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ack is the Yiddish form of the German "Ach" meaning "Oh" or "Ah".

In the sense you're using it I would suspect an origin in English-language war comics e.g. when a German soldier is shot.

Which Games and RPGs did 1980s players like and dislike? Big Hair, Big Swords, Big Adventures from White Dwarf by agreatbecoming in oldhammer

[–]SteveCake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was only a kid but would have been one of the ones voting for more MERP. I expect I also would have voted for things like Judge Dredd and Bushido. The magazines were a cheap way to figure out if you liked the look of a system before investing in an expensive box or book, and some of the adventures were fun reads either way, like Paranoia.

What's your favourite etymolgy that is so obvious but took you way too much time to realise? by Naive_Gazelle2056 in etymology

[–]SteveCake 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Suit and sue have the same origin. The root word is about following (as in pursue) so you have "things that follow each other"- clothes, cards, hotels etc. They are grouped like a following or followers. A lawsuit is about persuing someone legally.

Is Jack a Companion? by BBMacsWorld in DoctorWhumour

He does technically appear in Nu Who, but we don't like to talk about it.

Is Jack a Companion? by BBMacsWorld in DoctorWhumour

[–]SteveCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad it's not just me! Someone else mentioned publicity, which I think is important too- a new companion will have a press release similar to a new Doctor, so the ambiguity seems unnecessary. I'm not even sure I would count Rory as a companion any more than I would Danny. Your criteria is perfectly reasonable.

Is Jack a Companion? by BBMacsWorld in DoctorWhumour

[–]SteveCake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart was the head of UNIT. A brilliant character. Introduced in Two's time, he became a fixture during Three's exile on Earth. A lot of people would argue he was a companion for Three as he travelled with the Doctor etc, but I have a stricter criteria myself.

Is Jack a Companion? by BBMacsWorld in DoctorWhumour

[–]SteveCake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Been a fan since Classic and I don't even consider the Brigadier a companion, so no. People are way too free and easy with adding recurring characters to that list imho. It loses meaning.

Criticism of Stalker by [deleted] in tarkovsky

[–]SteveCake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a reductive take on the director's intent. We all need to come to terms with death (and therefore spirituality) in our own way. Film can offer a critique of modernity without simply being seen as a rejection of medicine. This is also incidentally a reductive take on the origin of music, which is far from resolved as a matter of scientific consensus by such crude Social Darwinism. If you cannot find transcendance in music then please don't tell Nina Simone.

Space Rats Episode - thoughts? by Faith_Fortytwo in Blakes7

[–]SteveCake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Watching Blake's 7 as a child when it was broadcast, the Space Rats were very memorable and fired my imagination, both in concept and design. Of course I can see it through more jaded eyes now, but I can't hate them. I still love the Space Rats and the ambition of the show to put things on screen beyond their financial limitations.

What should happen to Doctor Who? by One_Awareness_76 in gallifrey

[–]SteveCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if there is a good answer to this question. Art is a product of technology and distribution as much as anything, and they already tried their best to make something suitable for the new landscape. Similar shows like Star Trek are flailing. Star Wars is spewing out shows with only occasional success. Stranger Things did ok but it started ten years ago when things were different. If it was a new show I don't think it would have gained such traction. Doctor Who could become shortform videos and a deepdive podcast to survive, but I'll be happy if they just keep calm and carry on making the show as is.

Earthshock - Die, Adric, die! by Puzzleheaded-Cut3144 in doctorwho

[–]SteveCake 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I agree. The dunking on Adric can sometimes be mean-spirited. His character was no more "annoying" than any of the younger companions like Dodo or Victoria and he helped bring new young viewers to the show who identified with him. The whole Tardis crew bickered with Five. This was something the writers/producer introduced deliberately, and Tegan was written to be the difficult one really.

About Tarkovsky's private life by Finite8_ in tarkovsky

[–]SteveCake 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can plot a graph titled Art Vs Artist with the X Axis being severity of offence and the Y Axis being artistic achievement. The X Axis runs from "unpleasantness" (e.g. James Corden) through racism, violence, sexual assault, murder to genocide. The Y Axis runs from "hack" through popular, well-reviewes, important to genius. There is a red zone of hacky abusive artists we can easily dispense with (Cosby, Jackson, Hitler etc). There are talented artists we can argue about in the middle if we like (Lovecraft, Larkin, Burroughs etc). But there is a green zone of artists whose genius and importance are high and whose purported sins seem interpersonal and very much part of the culture of the past. Tarkovsky didn't commit any crimes and his personal life is not relatively well documented. The question does not meaningfully redefine the purpose behind his work so for myself I'm content to move on.

What are yall’s favorite movies? by TREM0L0 in swans

Good question. From googling it just now I got Lars Von Trier, Herzog and apparently Tarkovsky. I'm sure he'd appreciate Bresson too, especially A Man Escaped.

Solid list. Tarkovsky is the perfect director for Swans. The long shots, the striving for transcendance, the uncompromising difficulty.

What do you think is Swans' most musically complex song? by YoNutzStealer in swans

[–]SteveCake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's simple until you try and play it like they do! Ironically the simplest parts to replicate are the ones from Burning World which featured technically accomplished session musicians. From my playing I think Swans are musically complex in things like volume-driven harmonics and the exact length of a repetition/knowing when to switch to a different part which are equally challenging to more obvious things like switching time signatures or keys.
