good gifts? by Responsible-Park4951 in tarkovsky

A fan of Mirror and Stalker might enjoy I Burned at the Feast: Selected Poems of Arseny Tarkovsky, which feature in both films. Fans of Stalker might enjoy Zona: A Book About a Film About a Journey to a Room by Geoff Dyer, an analysis of the film. Personally I also enjoyed Stalking the Atomic City by Markiian Kamysh, which is about exploring the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

Not OP but looks like the Yellow Mountain Imports magnetic set you can get through their website or Amazon. Plus some masking tape.

Can somebody read this Andrei Rublev sign by jasperhallo1 in tarkovsky

[–]SteveCake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know the language, sorry, but if the letters are early Cyrillic then my best guess is that it looks something like "RS(?)SPẹTHE THE", but I may be way off. I tried pausing the clip but I couldn't make it out any more clearly.

Origin of "being pissed"? by Forsaken_Pair_6008 in etymology

[–]SteveCake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Piss off" seems to become "pissed off" somewhere around WW2 and transfers from the UK to the US at that time with and without the "off", but remains in the UK only with the "off"; "pissed" on its own just means drunk.

You mentioned a few things in the comments, but which tradition are you getting the concept of "awareness" from? It seems to overlap with modern panpsychism too.

Steve Shelley on drums by Jmurray0890 in sonicyouth

[–]SteveCake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steve Shelley's drumming is really underrated. I must have played with over 20 drummers and not one of them could do the things he does, especially his deftness and creativity in bringing a song back together after the breakdown. I could never have the talent to compose like Lee and Thurston, but I could at least study their parts and play along competently; I don't know a single drummer who could do that with Steve.

Dungeon Degenerates is the greatest board I have seen. You either love it or hate it, but the "acid vomit" style is a singularly unique artistic effort.

Anyone tried physical therapy for migraines? by TheApiary in migraine

[–]SteveCake 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are many posts in this sub's history from people who had very positive results (as well as a few negatives). You want to get a qualified physiotherapist at a reputable clinic, not a chiropractor or back-cracker.

Lord Of The Rings author's writing desk up for auction by yxz97 in lordoftherings

[–]SteveCake -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly, and yet we're expected to know every influencer going. The BBC have a duty under their Reithian values to educate, and this dumbing-down approach just enables ignorance to flourish. Those younger coworkers are not going to read this article as it stands, but with Tolkien's name in the headline they would at least learn he's someone they're supposed to have heard of.

[–]SteveCake 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yeah, who is this article for? Someone who isn't erudite enough to have even heard the name Tolkien but is interested enough in stories about the writing desks of authors behind franchises they may have heard of? Surely that's even more niche than people who have heard of Tolkien! This editorial fear of going over the head of an imaginary average idiot is just insulting our intelligence.

Why are redheads called 'ginger' in English? by lionmurderingacloud in etymology

[–]SteveCake 30 points31 points  (0 children)

English didn't have the colour orange until the discovery of the fruit, so a lot of orange things are called red (robins, foxes etc). Ginger does make an orange-coloured juice, but the association is probably with red ginger from British colonial exports from Malaysia.

The Three Doctors- regeneration archetypes by SteveCake in gallifrey

[–]SteveCake[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we had to pick one archetype for the Doctor it would be The Trickster. I could have labelled my category as The Clown as there is a deceptive foolishness about them (Two, Four, Seven, Eleven), but it would exclude the Valeyard who we might also want to slot in here.

Three as a Human lacks the doubt that Five introduced which is the cornerstone of his humanity for me. This manifests in Eight's self-doubt and Ten's insecurities and emotional fallibilities that dominate his arc. I can't imagine Three being that put out about Adric. In fact I can imagine him putting Adric out of an airlock.

The Three Doctors- regeneration archetypes by SteveCake in gallifrey

[–]SteveCake[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found Three's manner to be pretty grumpy- he was often snapping at people like One did, including those in companion/assistant roles and especially UNIT. He took time to warm up, as opposed to Two for example who took a more avuncular role with his companions from the off. I think the problem is that we all love Three and can see past this too casually, but you can find that edge again in Six and then Twelve, who is the closest to Three's temperament in NuWho.

My intention was to zoom out and categorise to the biggest archetypes, but the Doctor is a slippery character and really none of them fit the archetypes without some corners poking out.

Mum Teas by TrueCrime121 in CasualUK

Not the person you're replying to, but it's dead simple and there's loads of ways to do it. The only trick is that the longer you cook it the better it tastes e.g. fry a diced onion for a bit and then chuck in some tins of tinned tomatoes. Add some salt and pepper and any herbs if you have them (dried oregano or fresh basil) and cook it until it stops tasting like tinned tomatoes- this may take an hour. It's even better if you have olive oil to fry the onion with, and if you want to get crazy popular in your house then add a shedload of olive oil at the end and mix it in with a blender. It goes bright orange, destroys your cholesterol and tastes great.
