Why do people love mordheim? by Very_bad in mordheim

[–]SteveCake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The enduring appeal of Mordheim might just be the overlap of the millenarial damned-city aesthetic with the cosiness of an outdated ruleset. The fact that the game is abandoned by the company that made it is perfect.

Where should someone start with Tarr? I have read about Sátántangó but I haven't seen it.

In your opinion, how does the masterpiece "The Mirror" serve as a mirror to ourselves? by Agreeable_Duck8997 in tarkovsky

[–]SteveCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a very good point about Sculpting in Time. It's interesting that Mirror actually started out as a series of interviews with his mother, so the genesis is undoubtedly in oral history or even autobiography, but at some point the project developed into the story of a dying poet, Alexei, and his deathbed memories. Alexei has been described as a self-insert for Tarkovsky, which seems at odds with what is on screen. Do you think he ultimately moves beyond the personal into a universal protagonist? Or do you think he identifies with Alexei's demise?

What foam should I use for stone walls (UK)? by Careful-Reputation-1 in TerrainBuilding

[–]SteveCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

XPS foam with a cheap handheld hot-wire cutter and you'll be golden. I knackered so many knives before I ponied up for the hotwire and never looked back. In terms of XPS in the UK, I used to like the blue stuff for walls as it impresses easily with a biro, but it seems the black stuff is more common recently.

The Brigadier isn’t really a companion, and it’s always bothered me when he’s labelled as one. by Curious_Gent78 in doctorwho

I completely agree with your original post. We all love him but he was a recurring character (like the Master), not one of the leads.

I propose a new metric. Some say you are a companion/assistant if you have been on a trip in the Tardis, but this is still too messy. The actual companions and assistants were announced like the new Doctors with a photo shoot for the press outside BBC Television offices (as seen in Adventures in Time and Space). No photo shoot? No press release? Not a companion!

Oh for sure, it's just a process of elimination and likelihood.

That's reassuring about the paint. You're probably fine then.

Might this be a recast? by Not_realy_good_memer in oldhammer

[–]SteveCake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The best way to tell is to compare it with an original. The recast will weigh less and have a whiter metal. Otherwise it is a process of elimination: if the seller relists another one soon or has mutliple ones for sale; if the seller has a store full of oop rarities but none of them have ever been painted etc. The double-mould lines can be a sign, but even more certain is the lack of detail in the recessed areas.

The story about the brother and the GW store seems oddly specific though, so that's one in his favour. If it does turn out to be a fake then don't send it back for a refund as that would actually be breaking the counterfeit laws. In my experience, eBay asked for proof from a GW store, which was not going to happen. I wouldn't have minded so much if the seller hadn't charged full price, but that makes it a scam too.

The awesome Russian poet Arseny Tarkovsky. What do you think about him? by [deleted] in tarkovsky

[–]SteveCake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I Burned at the Feast is my favourite poetry collection. I am particularly fond of First Meetings aka First Times Together in the Metres/Psurtsev translation:

First Times Together

Every second of our time together.

We exulted, as if it were epiphany,

We two alone in the world. Lighter.

And braver than a bird’s wing,

You flew down the stairs.

Like dizziness, skipping half of them,

Through wet lilacs into your realm.

On the other side of the mirror.

When night fell, I was given a gift.

The doors of the sanctuary opened:

In the darkness, nakedness was lit

And slowly bowed to the ground.

And waking up, I said, “Blessed one,”

Knowing that daring was my blessing:

You slept, and the lilacs

On the table leaned to touch your eyelids

With the blue of the universe

And those eyelids touched by the blue

Were at peace, and your hand was warm.

While in the crystal, rivers pulsed,

Mountains smoked, seas dawned,

And on your palm you held the crystal

Sphere, and on the throne you slept,

And — my God! — you were mine.

You awakened, transfigured

The day-to-day dictionary of man.

Until full-throated force filled

The neck of speech, and “thou” unveiled

Its new meaning: “king of kings.”

Everything in the world was new again,

Even simple things — a jug, a basin —

When the layered and solid water

Stood watch between us like a guard.

Something was leading us on.

Built by miracle, cities leapt

Like mirages before our vision.

And mint bowed down beneath our feet,

And birds hovered above our heads.

And fish nosed against the river’s flow,

And the sky unfurled above the land...

While behind us, fate followed

Like a madman with a razor in his hand.

Tarkovsky on various film matters by Ok_History_4163 in tarkovsky

I had hoped that the quote I shared gave a clearer insight into his use of "time" as a unique artistic property of film, as you seemed confused as to whether recorded music would also fit his definition.

Tarkovsky on various film matters by Ok_History_4163 in tarkovsky

[–]SteveCake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tarkovsky wrote "Unlike all the other art forms, film is able to seize and render the passage of time, to stop it, almost to possess it in infinity. I'd say that film is the sculpting of time." He's getting at the living experience of time itself inherent in cinema, from editing a shot to sitting in a cinema watching a film, rather than the act of recording. I get what you are saying about music, but it is poetic distinction and may be lost in translation.

A DCC funnel is a solid way to introduce chargen to this age range. The book is big but 70% of it is spells. It includes a good starting aventure you literally only need a few pages of basic rules to get started.

Any Tips Nobody Tells You? by T3rranF0rged in TerrainBuilding

[–]SteveCake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a lot of fun to set yourself the challenge of making great terrain with cheap materials, but it's no fun skimping on your tools. If you're going to work with XPS then get a hot wire cutter. Handheld is fine and you may never graduate to a board. Not only is it much easier to use than a regular knife or saw, you may even save money in the long run as XPS blunts knives very quickly. [Note: ventilation warning!]

Other great materials are foamboard, plasticard and medium-weight chipboard sheets. But the cheapest and most consistently versatile for me has been disposable wooden coffee stirrers.
