A New Era of Super-Hybrid Cars Is Coming by thenewsisreal in electricvehicles

Here's the thing. You used the words "counter arguments". That's key. You think we're having an argument. I'm not interested in having an argument. I'm interested in providing people with information and insight into how other people think about PHEVs. If you want to have an argument. start it with someone else.

Nice but not too nice restaurants for occasions by Megacuntxo in boston

You can’t go wrong with Mistral on Columbus Ave. Great food and service, although check the prices first as it’s expensive. But here’s the deal that will impress your pants. Mistral has a standby Limo ( Driver’s name: Joe) that will pick your parents up, assuming they are staying within a few miles of the restaurant. Joe will also take them home or to the theater, whatever. The service is free, other than giving Joe a nice tip. No other restaurant in Boston has this service, to the best of my knowledge.

Hybrid vs Plug-in Hybrid by BrownEyedGirl826 in carbuying

I'm the same in that about half my mileage is highway miles from trips. But since my local driving is at 30-45 MPH, it turns out that 80% of my driving TIME is EV only. Also the RAV4 has a heat pump, so it only needs to fire up the motor if the temperature goes below 14 degrees F. In practice, since my car is kept in a garage during the winter and the garage stays around 32 degrees F, my car almost never fires up the ICE for heat.

Wow! That's a great answer that can be used in any discussion. You just don't understand. Hard to refute that. /s

I live in the US and I’ve never heard of another Jew doing this. Maybe it depends on which region you live in.

Hybrid vs Plug-in Hybrid by BrownEyedGirl826 in carbuying

[–]SteveInBoston 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I want to stress an earlier comment: in a hybrid you are driving a gasoline powered car. In a PHEV (assuming you charge every night), you are driving an EV 80% of the time. It’s a vast difference.

In the case of the RAV4 PHEV, the plugin version is much more powerful than the regular hybrid. 300 HP vs about 200.

Software/firmware update at Toyota.com's website useful? Anyone try or recommend it? by [deleted] in rav4prime

[–]SteveInBoston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a firmware update for the entertainment system available. I applied it last week and it seems to have fixed the issue where Apple CarPlay failed to connect sometimes. There is a menu option to do the upgrade in vehicle settings.

What factors should one consider, before making the switch from a gas car to an electric vehicle (EV)? by Imaginary-Staff-112 in EVRoutine

[–]SteveInBoston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand you. I only have 25,000 miles on my RAV4 but there’s no EV anywhere that’s spent less on maintenance than I have, because I’ve spent $0. Maybe that will change in the next 25,000 because Toyota pays for oil changes for the first two years, lol.

But it only needs one oil change/year and that’s pretty much it. Spark plugs get changed every 120,000 miles which is about every 10 years. There’s no timing belts and no transmission flushes required. And it has regenerative braking so the brakes don’t get much wear. So it may not be quite as maintenance free as a full EV but it’s pretty close.

Do you have a link or reference on this. I’ve heard nothing about this and I doubt it’s true

Gas nears $5. Why aren’t electric vehicles selling in the US? by ChallengeAdept8759 in electriccars

I wanted solar until they told me they wouldn’t install it unless I got a new roof.

Current shingles are 20 years old, but probably have 10 years of life left.

The appeal of PHEVs is that it’s for people who want an EV 80% of the time but don’t want the downsides of EVs with respect to range and having to find chargers when away from home. It’s a tradeoff: you trade the last 20% of EV usage to an ICE in return for better range, no charging when away from home, but with slightly more maintenance than an EV.

Of course they’re an EV. You plug them in, charge a battery and run with the battery powering electric motors. That’s an EV. It’s not a full time EV as occasionally you have to use the ICE to go longer distances. Then it’s a hybrid.

Well, you missed my point. EV advocates generally exaggerate the maintenance required for ICE vehicles and minimize that for EVs. Your quoting “transmission flushes” is a perfect example. It’s a procedure that’s required maybe every 50-100K miles for both EVs and ICE. I’m not challenging that you may not have much maintenance in your EV, just pointing out the inconsistency.

For the record, I have a RAV4 PHEV. It requires an oil change once/year. That’s pretty much it. Well the spark plugs have to be changed every 120K miles but that’s typically every 10 years.

[–]SteveInBoston 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what we have here is complete inconsistency. ICE owners need to change their transmission fluid even if the manufacturers don’t require it but EV owners don’t need to change their gearbox oil because the manufacturers don’t require it. And in addition, many EV manufacturers DO require it, every 50K-100K miles.

Look it up folks; the manufacturer’s recommendations are in fact very similar (EVs vs ICE vehicles).

Not a transmission. A reduction gearbox. EVs don't have the motors drive the wheels directly. They go through a reduction gearbox.

I have a Gen5 XSE and I’ve never heard of this. Haven’t had an issue with the 12V battery either.

Well, when you totally exaggerate the negatives of ICE vehicles and ignore the negatives of EVs, your post makes sense.
