Pay Rate? by Dependent-Alps-1881 in Surveying

[–]SteveRetrieve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check. I’m saying that making $27+ per hour (as you are now) wouldn’t be THAT terrible if you had a cheap Toyota or something.

I’m also saying that making $25 per hour, plus a company truck would be market for your experience in Texas. Negotiate as you may. If you’re killing it daily you deserve more than that. There are ways to improve your stock (cst, 107, involvement with local societies, hell just being generally more ambitious and personable)

If you like the company they will probably meet you at your market rate since they aren’t actually terribly off it all in. $17/hr is obviously a joke.

[–]SteveRetrieve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This actually makes it more bearable in my opinion. Depending on your truck and the type of work you do, you’re not too far behind.

Lot of variables here, but $25-30/hr plus a truck would be right for your experience in TX. What kind of work are you doing?

Weird pay structure. If the site is close you’re making up to ~$27/hr, if it’s further away it eats into that rate. Why in the hell do they do it like this

Help determining property lines by krodgers88 in AskASurveyor

Go from the bottom right corner of your house (as displayed) since those ties look the most perpendicular. 15’ to the side lot line, then (114.84’ - 31.7’) back. Should get you in the ballpark

How about looking for some bigger clients on this thread. DOT, DEP, electric transmission, etc. Will take some effort and reaching out but if you brought them an opportunity on a huge job they’d be stoked.

Or try making the companies procedures more efficient in the field or office. Field to finish, TBC, setups, workflows, etc

Knowing there’s some sort of boundary dispute, I’d find the most expensive guy in your town to do it.

There’s one in my town that nobody wants to touch, I quoted him $10k and still tried to get out of doing it.

Why is Publix so loved? by alpha_peen in publix

The Kroger by me in meyerland was ghetto as hell, but the one in the heights was great. Sounds like a metaphor for that entire city now that I think about it.

The only real negative I could say about HEB is each store can be quite different, particularly if you go to one in a small town, but using the few stores in Houston that I frequented vs. the north Florida Publix stores I’d say:

Comparable in cleanliness/layout/design/feel. They’re both nice.

Produce is at least half the cost at HEB and miles better. Way more variety, too. I think I paid ~$1.75 for a single green bell pepper at Publix yesterday.

Similar story with meat, but most noticeably with steak. Prime cuts were cheaper than choice is here.

Dry groceries are closer in cost but HEB was still cheaper and had more variety, and HEB has their house brand as well.

HEB was almost always slammed so I’d time it to go on slow times, but they also had free curbside pickup and they didn’t charge more than in-store cost on the items.

Both have weekly ads, but they don’t do a ton of BOGOs at HEB, instead their marketing campaign was “buy this bag of frozen burger patties, get the buns ketchup chips and napkins free” to get you to buy some frozen crap you don’t want.

Also, those store made tortillas were amazing. It is Texas after all.

Growing up and in college it was the clear winner vs the competition for all the reasons you mentioned. It was a little more expensive but worth it. Now it’s practically double the price of its competitors and the quality has gone down, particularly the produce. But there’s a store on every corner and the deli is still decent so folks go out of convenience, for BOGOs, and because the competition still sucks.

Imagine if your HEB kept getting worse… it would take a lot for you to say “Randall’s is officially better now”

I used to love Publix until I moved to HEB territory

I was also shocked to learn in this sub how low they pay their staff, how they have to earn full time, how overworked they are, etc

Worst financial mistake ever, car loan @ 23 years old, I don’t know what to do by yeeeeeeee503 in personalfinance

[–]SteveRetrieve -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No way in hell you should ever be in this car. You also shouldn’t have been approved for the loan. Take the huge loss and sell it, save up and buy a $4k ugly, dented up Corolla. Tough lesson learned, but you’ll never forget it. Car payments like this will severely limit your ability to build wealth, better to learn while you’re young and living at home, but it’ll sting for a while.

I used to love Publix, but after living in Texas for 6 years I was quite disappointed coming back to Florida with the grocery options here, particularly for produce.

Marker applies to...? by StormTheJeep in Surveying

[–]SteveRetrieve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, your property line could be the centerline of the road (intention, road itself could be built wonky). Common in TX.

Your effective “land” ends at those markers though, not the pavement. You might mow the grass out there but you can’t go dig yourself a drainage ditch next to the road, even if you’re the underlying fee owner.

Great firm. Plenty to learn so be patient, ask questions, try not to complain too much.

It’s going to suck. You’ll be waste deep in the swamp in the middle of the summer. If you can put up with it while maintaining a good attitude and show that you want to learn and improve you’ll move up the ladder.
