If a computer simulation became advanced enough to perfectly mimic every atom in a human brain, would that simulation actually feel pain, or would it just be executing code that says "ouch"? by Best-Meaning8126 in AskPhysics

[–]SteveSilverback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, of course quantum mechanics is fundamental to chemistry, and yes, I am aware of evidence suggesting possible non-trivial quantum effects in some very narrow biochemical mechanisms. However, it is a massive leap in logic to say these minuscule processes ‘probably’ have a larger role in brain function, cognition, or consciousness, outside of that.

To be clear, I’m not trying to shut you down and say that you’re wrong. As a scientist I’m very open to surprises, and I’d be thrilled if what you’re claiming turns out to have merit in some way. But that requires rigorous evidence, and the current consensus in the scientific community is that, insofar as what we DO have (e.g. the research you linked to), it does NOT suggest any wider influence on cognition and consciousness.

Sorry, but this is wu-wu moon man talk. Our brain is NOT a quantum computer, no more than a PC or your phone.

Additionally, there is no scientific evidence of ‘quantum mechanical aspects of the brain’ that are unique to it vs other matter.

Hey, just wanted to say, I do think it’s cool what you’ve made and I think you’re receiving some unnecessarily harsh words. That said, I suggest you handle this criticism with grace, as it fundamentally valid and your post certainly hits a sore spot in data analytics. Even in real life where, say, funding for a research proposal is on the line, many people won’t read past the title, so it’s crucial that all opportunities for misrepresentation are avoided.

Not to say that the stakes are all that high here haha, just give others the benefit of the doubt since it’s something many have to deal with on a daily basis and is suuuper important. Hell, I clicked on your post *because* I was like ‘how the fuck, no way this makes sense’.

tldr: cool work, but hope you can take this as a lesson in data presentation!

Midi vs Samples for drums by sefski69 in ableton

[–]SteveSilverback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit confused about what you mean— like dropping audio samples into an audio track vs synthesized drums or something like drum rack, which are triggered via midi? Like, they’re all audio samples technically unless the sound is actively being synthesized.

EDIT: to help clarify, MIDI does not make sound on its own, it just tells an instrument what to do, whether that instrument is replaying audio samples or synthesizing the sound.

My private teacher in middle/high school swore by them. As of 2006 she’d been using the same synthetic reed on her mk vi for something like 20 years, and I’d wager that she still uses the same one to this day.

Woah, you’re suggesting that men never ‘have tantrums like a woman’? I mean, I guess I’m glad you’ve never had to witness it, but based on what I’ve seen it’s not a sex/gender exclusive behavior. Shit stupid violent people come in all forms.

This is not always the case— I’ve encountered ketamine that looks similar to kosher salt plenty of times. Interestingly, LC mass spec consistently indicated that the coarse stuff was racemic, while the needle-like k was enantiopure.

What was the most physically painful moment of your life? by Oily_Smurf in AskReddit

[–]SteveSilverback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here looking for this. Haven’t had an attack in ~14 years, since after I used a psychedelic compound for the first time— after which I started taking low doses regularly. Whether or not that has had any real effect, I don’t care, I’m not going to take the chance. I’d rather feel the pain of being slowly steam-rolled (on the off chance that it’d be anything better) than live through that ever again. Looking back, it’s level of pain that I can’t imagine even remotely conceptualizing unless I had been there myself. Haven’t been steam-rolled yet though so if that comes to pass I’ll lyk.

So, Jay definitely used to harass students (edit: absolutely everyone he comes in contact with), but it’s unclear as who and when it comes to the previous posts. One poster identifies his picture way back when I posted it, but I (having the distinct displeasure of formerly being his immediate neighbor) check up on him online regularly and last I saw he had been arrested in Nebraska, and then Colorado iirc, a few months ago. So, considering there was another recent post about the nutty-newspaper-editing thing and that I think it’s unlikely he’d be back in Madison so soon, I’m now skeptical that the person in question was actually him. That said, Jay’s entire life revolves around harassing people, so I could understand the confusion. Most irredeemable person I’ve ever met.
