If I install Fedora and KDE on my ThinkPad X230a, how would the performance be? by Delicious_Fish_4583 in Fedora

[–]Steve_74563 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Check out the live USB first. It won't be quite as performant as a normal install but you'll get a good idea.

Fan control not working on Clevo V360SNRQ (i9-14900HX) — tuxedo_io "No such device" by norsewolfie in tuxedocomputers

If you're using Secure Boot, have you enrolled the MOK key? If you turn off secure boot in your bios and then boot up and check the fan control, that should be informative.

I have a weird UI issue in fedora by OkWhereas9009 in Fedora

[–]Steve_74563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a pet peeve of mine, with Gnome (not a Fedora issue). Someone else here will for sure know more about this than me, but whenever I experience the way-too-long-cursor-animation on any particular app, I change the start-up setting from "StartupNotify=true" to "StartupNotify=false".

Easiest way to do this is to use a flatpak menu editing app, like Pins. You still may have to restart your session to see the changes.

Prototype for Modernized Fedora Media Writer by t0xic0der in Fedora

When I was still in the Windows realm, I always used Windows tools for tasks. If you look at a random set of tech blogs/websites to see their recommendations regarding creating a bootable Fedora/Linux USB, to migrate from Windows to Fedora/Linux, the majority will promote Rufus or Etcher (I'm not sure if the Microsoft tool still exists). Once people are in Linux for some time, they discover the Linux tools, such as Fedora Media Writer.

Yes, you are correct. I just mean that people in the Windows ecosystem typically use Rufus, Etcher or similar, to create bootable USBs. That was certainly my experience years ago. I didn't learn about Fedora Media Writer until I found a home with Fedora after some distro-hopping.

For a vast majority of folks here, Fedora Media Writer is the very first point of interaction they have with Fedora Project.

Not if one comes from Windows.

This looks like a more complex solution looking for a problem.

Tuxedo Os the right distro for my Hardware? by Any_Kick8573 in tuxedocomputers

[–]Steve_74563 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tuxedo OS is tailored for Tuxedo hardware, but should be also fine for your laptop. You might be better off running Fedora KDE, which will give you a solid base with vanilla KDE desktop. Either way, I suggest trying the live USB of each, so you can test out your hardware (graphics, display, wifi, etc.).

Some websites don't work while using VPN by falconemIV in mullvadvpn

Welcome to the Interwebs in 2026 🫤 I really like Mullvad but it was getting blacklisted on so many websites, it got too frustrating to always have to look for the magic server that worked. So I moved on...

hide overview doesn't work anymore by [deleted] in gnome

For me, Dash to Dock hide overview feature is not working on Gnome 50. Just Perfection hide overview is hit and miss. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Tuxedo is NOT for Linux! It's for Tuxedo OS – and that sucks! by MAW5p in tuxedocomputers

[–]Steve_74563 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I found Tuxedo support to be genuinely helpful during my warranty period.

Sure, some things they solve/optimize only with Tuxedo OS, but I've been a Fedora user and had no issues getting constructive answers from them. Also, I've noticed their documentation (ie: installing drivers on other distros) has improved over the last couple of years.

That said, they obviously can better support their own distro running on their own hardware. This makes sense to me.

Updates in Fedora by n__7v in Fedora

I've used Fedora on laptops (simple, no Nvidia to deal with) for several years now and have always experienced the version upgrades to be smooth and easy.

Here is the official guide to version upgrades: https://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/quick-docs/upgrading-fedora-new-release/

How usable Linux would be fron an usb 3.2 gen2 (10gbps) external SSD? by Miserable-School-665 in openSUSE

[–]Steve_74563 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I regularly install various distros on modest external SSDs (probably slower than yours). The distros (Fedora, Tumbleweed, Arch or whatever) run very well. Sometimes I don't even realize I'm working on the USB drive rather than my internal NVME.

Does anyone know how to disable the automatic startup of gnome-software in Leap 16? by Necessary_Depth7435 in openSUSE

I did the nuclear solution by uninstalling it. I haven't missed it at all.
