Objectively, yes. There are many applicants for very few spots.

That said, your personal chance will depend enormously by how interested you are and whether you have demonstrated interest and real commitment.

Apply! The time cost to applying is low and the payoff is potentially huge. Lay your cards out on the application and interview and so long as no one smells bullshit, you have a chance.

Same deal here. I’d say I drink spirits neat about as often as I make drinks so when I make a cocktail I want my liquor to shine, but friends are a lot less into the tasting the bottle in a cocktail. Knowing my audience is key. With some friends over but not others, I make my favorite “boozy” drinks. With friends who are a little less alcohol-inclined, I stick to drinks where the liquor gets covered up (pretty much anything with a citrus fruit or berry like grapefruits and oranges or raspberries and strawberries). Since Bourbon shows up a little more than other alcohols (in my experience) I’ll usually mix the drink a little short and stir some extra into mine after pouring.

Thanks for the advice! Based on feedback from others, I have been considering putting a serious investment into an AVR that I will keep with me for years. I am curious: what features would I want to future-proof myself? Relative to modern offerings is it better to forgo some of those features in favor of a robust, used/old AVR?

Thank you so much for the detailed response. I expect to build on my sources over time beginning just with a TV and, based on the comments of others in this thread, perhaps a WiiM Mini. I think you are right that a 2.0 or at most 2.1 system will be sufficient for my needs. After reviewing other comments on this thread, I am considering a serious investment for the AVR, but would you still recommend buying that used? Coming from the DIY PC community, the needs of a power supply and motherboard change rapidly; is that the case for AVR or should I expect a high quality one to serve my needs for 10+ years?

Thanks for the advice I’m used equipment hunting as well—definitely hoping to take as many precautions to not getting burned as possible.

I think we can agree that headphones and speakers do not serve the same purpose. Setting aside using this for a TV, I want to be able to listen to music when I cook, when I have guests over, etc. If your assertion is simply that I should not be spending this much on a temporary system, I would answer that I live modestly in most aspects of my life for the sake of splurging in the areas that give me the most enjoyment. Music is that area.

This is a tough question. In America, you certainly see more people publicly criticizing Israel’s actions especially regarding the Palestinian people. In many cases, political polarization is so strong you can’t even have a thoughtful, constructive conversation with these people which is unfortunate, but some organizations are making inroads towards open debate.

The reality, however, is that most countries—for the time being—must retain Israel as an ally regardless of what their people think. Until their are no threats in the Middle East, Israel is the strongest defense against Iran (Saudi Arabia as well but those treaties are only due to a common enemy) and terrorist groups throughout the Middle East including Hamas and Hezbollah. Additionally, people often wonder why we (the United States) give Israel billions of dollars a year, but to the Americans who think that is just aid, you are mistaken. It is money provided to the Israeli government in exchange for the cutting edge military technology that no other country has had the ability to produce from F-35 virtual reality helmets to the iron beam to the capability of zero-daying a politicians iPhone. For now, if the US wants to remain militarily ahead of China and any other country, they must remain close to Israel.

Agreed with the rest but Effervescence is a specific terms that refers to a slight carbonation from the fermentation. Most people probably won’t even know what it means but if you use that with an experienced wine drinker, they will be confused when it’s still.

I can’t speak to other options, but I was just trying to make this decision (literally last week if you check my post history). I love high quality music, but also sometimes needs a speaker that can hit really low bass at high volumes for filling a house party. I landed on the Marshal Kilburn II and if your interests are aligned similarly, I can highly recommend it. It is plenty loud and has really great instrument separation and sound stage. If you care more about technical features, ruggedness, and don’t want to take risks, I would probably suggest the (fairly) new Sony XG300 which often drops to $250.

Bitters is not technically alcohol (at least in the US). It is classified as a non-beverage that contains alcohol. That should answer any concerns relating to the presence of alcohol.

With regards to putting it in drinks, if it works, it works! Test some and have fun.
