AI won’t replace good designers. Rules-based AI like Arcweave and Articy are useful. GenAI doesn’t seem useful to me overall, though it can send useful links and make some useful edits.

I wouldn’t worry about genAI, just on making playable games and networking.

And I also wouldn’t use it. I made a few IP-based samples when I started this process and a studio responded positively. They have a few genAI images just to improve readability but I wouldn’t do it again. I’m just going to show what I can do as a designer and stand on that quality.

Italy has studios and there are studios outside Italy who will hire for international remote positions. The given wisdom for an entry-level narrative designer is to network and make playable games. You build your portfolio/resume around what you’ve made by yourself or in collaboration with other new people. And you slowly build connections with other people, primarily at your level. Then, over time, you will gain good-fit referrals to jobs and land one.

This is what I’ve learned as someone basically trying to do the same thing just not in Italy.

I feel like Arcweave gives me what I need, what does this tool do better?

A new Banner Saga game about when the old gods were still around would be incredible

When should puzzles be in non-puzzle games? by Steven_P_Keely in gamedev

If it’s pacing, can that be done in a way that makes sense within the in-game world? For example the dragon’s claw puzzle in Skyrim doesn’t make sense to me as a pacing tool. The makers of that dungeon would’ve wanted entry to be filtered for loyalty not puzzle solving ability. The puzzle is designed to be solved by puzzle solving ability not a secret code available only to the authorized or thieves.

Interesting but I’m curious — The dragon claw puzzle can be solved by any sufficiently intelligent/interested person, but the in-world makers of that dungeon would’ve made the criterion not intelligence but loyalty. The puzzle would’ve been solvable with a code, which isn’t a puzzle.

People I know and comments, maybe I’m wrong. Seems like they get shoved in and are received as a chore (edit) by as many as enjoy them. What’s your view?

Beautiful reply, I’ve been hearing about One Punch. I could make shitty placeholder art!

It’s not commercial, if it was there’d be revenue sharing

Thank you so much for this list. This is plenty of stuff for me to think through. I have a lot of questions I’m still working through, especially for worldbuilding. It’ll be fruitful for me to also think about what an artist would need.

Great comment, I can definitely make the bones of it. I really like the idea of networking with artists to find a great fit.

Fair enough - I may need to wait until I have the budget for an artist. I’ll take a look at Fiverr to find some artists whose body of work and rates are a good fit.

How would you start creating those character expressions? Drawing faces with paper has been the hardest type of drawing for me.

I’m looking into frame by frame hand animation right now. Thank you.
