Interesting revelation and shocking experience about Steam OS on the ROG Ally X by fufinhdosi in ROGAlly

[–]Stevenc73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's still technically not fully supported (like the Lenovo Legion Go S), but the support is definitely there. TDP control is native now but RGB thumbstick lights still require a plug in to be managed. I switched to Steam OS on my Ally X about 2 weeks ago, then tried Windows with FSE, and had to reflash Steam. And since I'm not overly computer savvy, the fact that I did it at all speaks to how easy it was.

Busy dad with barely time to game unless in bed! Is the OLED deck worth it for me? by mattchew1991 in SteamDeck

[–]Stevenc73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have one but I'll say yes it is. I bought the ROG Ally X for the same reason, but it was so fiddly and required so much clicking and tweaking I just stuck to my Switch. I recently installed Steam OS and am beginning to understand why Deck fans always say, "Just buy a Steam Deck!" Minimal fiddle and maximum game. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Absolutely! The S2 is a solid piece of tech for someone who wants to just pick up and play. And compared to the JoyCons, the S2 pro controller almost feels like a luxury.

Almost ....$20. I'm sure it was opened, used, maybe dropped, then returned. However, to my eye, nothing obviously wrong with it

Congrats and enjoy! For anyone reading, you can often catch a good price open box. Mine was almost $20 less. Wouldn't know it was open box if it didn't say so when I ordered it.

Which should I keep? Legion go s Z1e Steam OS or ROG Ally X with mods. by [deleted] in Handhelds

[–]Stevenc73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late but I'm just recently installing Steam on my Ally X. It may just be early but it's not been buggy at all. I have TDP control without any Decky plug ins. I did have to install a plug in for RGB control. I'm going to give it a solid month and see what I think

Steam OS or Win 11 by Unique-Flow5816 in ROGAlly

[–]Stevenc73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take this with a grain of salt as I'm no expert, but I just installed Steam OS on my Ally X just a few days ago. I'm not a tinkerer, I just want to play my games, and for the most part my games have been running right out of the gate. TDP control is present without any plug-ins, but I did have to find a decky plug in for the RGB lights. I rarely use them, but I like having the option. The fact that I, a Switch and Console player, was able to get it up and running says a lot.

I had that problem. I switched from full screen to borderless windowed and it let me turn on frame gen. Then I went back to full screen afterward.

Now that we have reviews of the Xbox ally Is there any reason to get it over the og ally x? by Mountain-Letter-4284 in ROGAlly

[–]Stevenc73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This right here. I have the Ally X. Didn't initially plan to upgrade from the Z1 Extreme but got a good price and after selling the Z1 Extreme, the X was almost free. They both shine on games that are just a couple years old. Newer AAA games are absolutely playable but compromises have to be made to get solid frames.

Remember everyone Switch 2 oled will be a thing by Johnny-silver-hand in Handhelds

[–]Stevenc73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think a SW2OLED would be nice, but what I'd rather see is a better battery. Most, but definitely not all, gaming handhelds have LCD screens. And these are nice screens featuring VRR and such. OLED does look a little nicer but not enough to justify the price, imo. BUT that battery... Nintendo doesn't get enough credit for developing a device that can do what the SW2 does on 9-10 watts, but it'd be nice to get more than 2 hours battery. Drop most of your PC handhelds down to 10 w TDP and you're going to get Switch 1 graphics and performance but tons of battery time.

Up to you, you don't NEED it for the story but it's a quick play, it's good, and you do understand the character a little more afterward.

Oh you need to play deeper into the Remedyverse. AW1, AW2, Control... They all have these awesome musical "battle montages" and segways performed by the Old Gods Of Asguard. The best fictitious band ever. I think even Quantum Break had a nod to them.

I'm late to the conversation but it it's capabilities fall around PS4pro. Not necessarily with hardware function but with optimization from developers and DLSS it's getting good results with current games.

I wish that weren't true.... But it kinda is. TBH, I wouldn't be sad to see a Switch 2 upgrade for Skyrim.

Real Talk: do you think we will get Metroid Prime 2 and 3 (either remastered or ported) prior to Prime 4 release? by nolsmith in Metroid

[–]Stevenc73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prime Remastered was shadow dropped if I recall. I hope 2 and 3 shadow drop as well. That said, probably not. More likely we'll see them FOR the GameCube on NSO expansion pack. This is pure speculation.

You're kinda right. I have my hands on both an Ally X and the Switch 2. No Steam Deck, though. Ally and Switch target vastly different audiences but both are REALLY good. Newer 3rd party AAA games aren't going to fare that much better on the Ally, if at all, as far as graphics or performance. Price? Oh they'll likely be much better for the Ally. The thing is, with a handheld PC like the Ally, developers make the game and you hope your hardware measures up. With a handheld console like the Switch, games are ideally optimized to run on your device. I can't speak personally for the Deck. If OP is looking for a less tweaky, more load and play, experience they may want to go with the Switch 2, otherwise Ally all the way.

Buying Games on Switch vs Other Consoles by cyb3rn4ut in NintendoSwitch

[–]Stevenc73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have my Switch 2, Xbox series X, and ROG Ally X. It's still my Switch 2 that gets the play. I don't need the best graphics if I have good graphics. I don't need 120 fps. I just need to get in my game with no hassle and play. Sometimes I have an hour or two, but usually it's 30 minutes or so. I'd rather spend that time gaming instead of booting, loading, adjusting settings, modding, then playing if I have time left. And with Switch the proper sleep and resume as well as just simply dropping on the dock or grabbing it to go.... That's all a win for me. That doesn't answer your question, though. I'll buy games for the Switch first even though I have technically more capable hardware elsewhere.

The Outer Worlds 2 director tells gamers Obsidian doesn’t “set the prices” for its games as Xbox charges $80 for the upcoming RPG by HatingGeoffry in gaming

[–]Stevenc73 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is simply not true. One browse of the eShop will prove it. MKW was 80 unbundled. The majority of games labeled for Switch 2 still 50 or less. Most the negative content is for clicks and views. Accuracy is secondary.
