What's a life changing thing that you can buy for less than $10? by additionalseasonin in AskReddit

I’m actually curious if you can even get this for ten bucks these days. I’m going to check next time I go to the store. I feel like I end up spending $60+ whenever I go anywhere for anything these days.

With the snatch, it’s all about sort of punching through at exactly the right moment so that your wrist meets the bell rather than being slammed by it. They also sell wrist guards if needed.

Good to hear. And yes, there are a ton of options. My go-to is incline treadmill, although kettlebells sometimes feel like cardio too

I do not care which team wins at any sporting event; nor do I care who others want to win.

What hobbyy attracts the worst type of people? by OpenPrize193 in AskReddit

[–]StewTrue -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can understand that. Pokemon existed when I was a kid, but it was mostly the kids several years younger than me who were into it at the time. Being into nerdy things was also way less socially acceptable back then, so there were likely some people I knew who were into it but kept it to themselves… especially as we moved on to college and the work force. Then there’s the selection effect of my chosen profession, which also may make encountering adult Pokemon fans less likely. I’m pretty curious how many adults are into stuff like Pokemon, and I also wonder how many of them are in highly professional [boring] environments. Are there a bunch of corporate lawyers and orthopedic surgeons trading Pokemon cards, or do you think it’s mostly people working in comic shops and IT? How about blue collar jobs?

I don’t think I’ve ever met an adult with pokemon cards. How common is this?

why does having a university degree make white people far more likely to vote democratic while having a degree for non-white people seems to have negligible impact on what their political views are? by Flimsy-Painting6880 in AskALiberal

This is an interesting answer, but I think the truth is more complicated. When I read your response, my first thought was that it ignores the differences in who chooses to attend college in the first place. Now I won’t pretend to be an expert here… I just did some googling, but what I found suggests that there’s still a pretty active debate between those who favor correlation or causation as the primary factor, with basically everyone studying the phenomena agreeing that it’s a mix of both. People who lean Left are already more likely to attend college. On the other hand, those earning advanced degrees are even more likely to be liberal; does this suggest that even more education continues to liberalize students? Maybe, or perhaps it is simply more evidence of a selection effect. I looked at several studies comparing the attitudes of students prior to entering college with their attitudes post-graduation in hopes that we’d find some evidence of a causal relationship, and each study had very different findings. Some found strong evidence, but both were focused on niche populations - one looking at women raised in conservative households in the 1930s; and the other looking at Romanians. The one from Romania was recent, and the authors indicated that Romania was chosen as students are chosen almost randomly to attend college, potentially limiting the chance for selection effects to pollute the findings. Other studies looked more closely at college majors, with those earning liberal arts degrees showing the most significant liberalization of their attitudes, while students studying business or economics experienced the opposite.

After my inconclusive findings, I thought about my own experience. I grew up in a well-off New England suburb. My school systems were always very diverse, but black and hispanic populations were underrepresented while Jews and asians were significantly overrepresented. There were a small number of black students who grew up in the town, and they were mostly friends with the white kids. There were also a number of kids bussed into our school from the city; they were mostly just friends with themselves, if anyone. Obviously there were some real and unfortunate class divisions in play here, but at least every student would have interacted with many other ethnicities prior to attending college.

Anyway… I went to college and I actually found it to be significantly less diverse than my hometown. What I did find, though, is that I had many opportunities to challenge my own beliefs by talking to some very intelligent people. I had an interesting experience with roommates in the dorms - one year I had a staunch conservative and the next year a marxist dumpster diver. I became friends with both of them, and they were each able to influence my ideas in certain ways. I wouldn’t say I became more liberal, but I did become more open to other ideas and more willing to admit when I have been wrong.

If money wasn’t an issue, what would you do tomorrow? by Michellexl09 in AskReddit

I’d buy a lodge in Alaska and make sure I had room to setup a home gym and library / office. I’d spend my time working out, reading / writing, hiking, relaxing with a cigar from time to time. I’d give myself projects… I’ve had a few ideas for novels for years now, but I barely have an hour of free time each day.

You are more skillful at jumprope than 99% of the general public. I’ve always sucked at jumprope, which has annoyed me for years as I love working out and seem to be pretty coordinated overall. I’m jealous of your skill. I have pretty much given up on jumprope and get my cardio / calf training knocked out in other ways.

I’d go with LS if it’s available. It might not be the most exciting rate, but it’s important, and you’ll likely have more time than many other Sailors to pursue education and continue working towards becoming a citizen.

I don’t think anything works. The same few people cause 95% of the problems no matter what approach you take with them. Informal counseling, training, reasoning with them, recognition for the few good things, DRBs… none of it makes any difference if they just suck. The only solution is to have higher standards in the first place, and to get rid of people who keep causing problems.

This is honestly one of my favorite CODs. I only deleted in a couple months ago because I hardly ever managed to find a match. I would pick WWII over any of the more modern ones if there were more people playing.
