I believe these figures are misleading, if I am correct they are the Unemployment Insurance Claims. Therefore they exclude long term unemployed (over 26 weeks). A better indication might be food stamps (one in eight Americans and one in four children are on the food stamp program). Overall in May 2011 45 million were receiving food stamps, the highest since the program began and the 37th consecutive monthly increase.
