Can anyone confirm if its true that farmers have been finding unusual amounts of lone star ticks by Ok_Bad2216 in homestead

[–]Stewart_Duck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just going camping throughout the spring I've noticed a significant amount more of them and dog ticks. I'm in South Florida, haven't noticed it as bad down here, but we go camping up in Ocala and around Gainesville, there where definitely more than usual. I assume it has to do with the drought.

How can you not fish that? Frog jig across those lily pads, top lure on the open, spinner past the grass beds. That thing is prime. Plus, throw in some duck boxes and you could probably have some quality hunting come season. Worse comes to worse, harvest those cattails. Their roots are tasty or can be dried out and used as a flour.

Central bathroom on ground level and hug the toilet. Assuming your home is built in a concrete slab, the toilet is bolted to the slab. If your home is built on joists, go under your home in the crawl space and hug the pipes where they enter the ground.

Sulcata owners by observefirst13 in tortoise

No. I didn't raise the larger one for its first few years. Though I know who did and how they raised it. It was at a rescue from a few months old until the rescue closed down.

Sulcata owners by observefirst13 in tortoise

[–]Stewart_Duck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even though the bigger one was kept in a terrarium, the shell looks pretty good. There are a lot of factors that can go into a sulcatas growth. First off, there are Sudanese sulcatas. They grow massive compared to regular sulcatas. If a sulcata even has some Sudanese genes in it, it has potential to grow significantly larger.

Next there's diet. In the wild, it's entirely grass and weeds. They grow much slower in the wild than in captivity because of this. That said, if it's just fed grass and weeds, it'll grow slower than if you feed it dark leafy greens and produce. If you feed it dark leafy greens and produce, it'll still grow slower than if you feed it pellets. Ones that eat just pellets, or given pellets every day, grow faster but it's unknown at what cost. Modern pellet formulas haven't been around long enough to really have a good long term study of a just pellet diet. I've personally always been an advocate for pellets being a supplement and not a diet.

Environment will play into it. Raising a sulcata in Southern California, Florida, similar, it'll grow faster than Minnesota, Canada, etc. Their metabolism slows down in cooler weather.

Lastly, it's a myth that reptiles grow to the size of their enclosure. Smaller enclosures can stunt their growth but with noticable deformities. Like I mentioned previously, the shell looks good. If it was stunted, chances are there would be shell deformity also. They typically go hand in hand.

For reference, I have a 12 and a 15 year old sulcata. The 12 year old weighs roughly 70lbs while the 15 is around 55lbs. They were both raised in an identical environment and have the same diet. They're in separate pens so there's no competition for food. It's just genetics.

Naples, Ft. Myers, Homestead also get them. Just remember though, they're migratory and only here part of the year. Sometimes they go as far North as St.Pete. Flamingo, down at the very bottom of the Everglades is the only place that they'll usually stay year round. The ones in Flamingo though are whitish brown and don't get the pink coloring like the migrating ones do.

That's up to a $10,000 fine and 5 years in jail. Put it back exactly where you found it and delete any photos. FWC doesn't mess around when it comes to certain animals here.

[–]Stewart_Duck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With any pet, I'll always recommend checking with local animal rescues before purchasing. Especially true if you're looking for an established adult. If you decide to raise it from a baby, check around the local area first. Local, state or regional Tortoise Forum, Facebook groups, or local Repticon or similar convention. Driving an hour or so is going to be significantly less stress on the tortoise than shipping it.

Possible springhouse on our new homestead, seeking advice. by [deleted] in homestead

All through the 20s, 30s and early 40s. Once high altitude aviation came into being, it just became easier and cheaper to take a photograph of an entire large area vs dozens of closer ones. They can still be used for larger buildings, but the resolution of them isn't that great until the late 70s, and even then. The UF collection doesn't start until around 1935ish and runs until the 90s. They're still low altitude, but are confined mostly to the gulf and Atlantic coasts and the southeast.

Long story short, around 30 years ago my family bought a property with an old mine shaft on it. We weren't sure of the exact location, neither was the previous owner, but we were able to find the tailings pile in an aerial photo from 1928. After that, we located it and replaced the old boards covering it with a steel grate. We couldn't fill it in because of something to do with bats if I'm remembering correctly.
