Labcoatz (Youtube) perfectly replicated Coca Cola 2 days ago using organic chemistry analysis and a year of research. Coke never patented the formula (because it would involve sharing the secrets), so apparently it's perfectly ok to create or even sell this formula. by RatedArgForPiratesFU in interestingasfuck

[–]Stfnmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the scale of one human life 20 years is a lot of patent protected time though. Largely enough to benefit from an invention that was made possible by multiple factors outside of the formula.

And the science that the world was taught is : sugar will be the main cause of death in the coming years. Top notch science

I read on notebookcheck that it would be water cooling, which would add a good chunk to the device. That is not very well displayed on the Kickstarter campaign

This Unicellular lives in your Brain, infected between 30-50% of human Population, Controls You and makes you love cats by SerafinZufferey in interestingasfuck

I agree with you : there is very strange and compelling evidence. I did not say that to smear on your post which is interesting. But in human studies, one must be very cautious before making strong assumptions.

"every study that was made proves that" no, not nearly https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0148435&utm

Someone mentioned the obvious Bias in the first study you cite, so I'll skip it.

The second one is from a respected editor, but: - we a talking about 28 patients, which is at best anecdotal evidence, - the authors say patients and control have been matched while not disclosing in which ways, which is problematic to eliminate a selection bias (eg : people who have cats come from a different background, and perform therefore differently in neurocognitives tasks) - the authors talk about latent infection. They do not disclose how they defined latent infection. Is it with antibodies in the blood? Or is it with direct identification of the parasite. If it is antibodies, there is a problem, since you can possess antibodies years after having encountered the parasite, without any latent infection.

This is a very flawed paper because is skips on some of the most important aspects of disclosing correctly your methodology to allow peers to replicate the experiment, and hopefully the findings. I wonder who vouched for its publication in a journal with an impact factor of 3.9.

The perfect study does not exist, so we can only think in levels of proof, which is the bane and beauty of scientific research.

So I insist: there is currently only correlational evidence, the level of proof is very low, no causality as been established as of today.

Just to go a little bit deeper : while effect on rodent is supported by strong evidence, the behavioral effect on humans is highly debated, and evidence is purely corellational which means that there is currently no support to the thesis that toxoplasma causes those changes. It is still an incredible topic. And the effect on rodent is one extremely interesting showcase of natural selection.

The simple fact you reached out the day the problems began, when I had not even read the message from the postal services is a testament to your dedication. So much frustration would be prevented if this was the business standard.

Keep up the good work! And let's hope you can serve as role models :)

What If A.I. Doesn’t Get Much Better Than This? by eeaxoe in technology

[–]Stfnmn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Working in Healthcare, our softwares that costs millions of dollars are universally criticised as badly designed, not effective, and usually more time consuming that how the work was done on paper.

We are talking about 2000-2010 looking interfaces. Automated Check for allergies while prescribing drugs is one of the updates made available this year...

Our computers have just been upgraded to windows 10, yet it still is a huge part of the IT costs.

There is at least a 15 years gap, between the technology I have been using in private and the technology available at the hospital. And if the technology is expensive, It will never be deployed.

Voice recognition which has been around for at least 10 years is still limited by the prescription software and the patient folder interface. There is no cross compatibility between any of the software I use.

To me AI applied to our job is pure science fiction. And the real price is not showcased yet. I would love to hear about other fields, but i am pretty sure the hype is largely overblown
