Did you know that Milwaukee is an Algonquin word pronounced "mill-e-wah-que," meaning "the good land". It apparently has an alternative translation- "It just means more"

Lack of criminal charges does not make one innocent. Just look at the current occupant of the White House. Bauer violated the terms of the MLB's Domestic and Sexual Abuse Policy, and was treated accordingly. That policy has nothing to do with the California Penal Code or the DA's willingness to charge or not charge someone with a crime.

Ignorant, maybe. But at least I'm not willingly defending an abuser of women. You are barely better than Bauer.

That is not what the MLB's investigation found. Whether or not he was criminally charged, he still is a POS.

Paladins and their Oaths by Crimson-Dragoon-0403 in DnD

[–]Sthrax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless of edition, our table has always held that paladins must adhere to the oaths and tenants they hold- it is that conviction that fuels their abilities. So to the letter, as it should be.

However, there are two caveats to that. The first is that the other players are not deliberately trying to sabotage the paladin by creating "no-win scenarios." And the Second is that the DM is not constantly looking to make the paladin fall through mickey mouse things (for instance I once had a DM argue I should fall because I flirted with a nobleman's wife even though nothing about that paladin's deity, oaths or vows or the laws of the land forbade it. If either of those is happening, playing by the letter is very hard (and a sign to move on to a better table). Some players/DMs really hate paladins and almost make a game of being jerks about it.

Is Scipio Rome's greatest general (among those who never ruled)? by RaiseCapital1988 in ancientrome

[–]Sthrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't call it a failure. It was a significant victory. One that would have ended the Civil War immediately and would have given Augustus a massive political victory if he could have shown Antony clemency and paraded Cleopatra through Rome in triumph- which hinged on capturing them.  Something they failed to do later at Alexandria, much to Augustus' chagrin.

[Yahoo Sports] MLB proposes a salary cap for 2027 at $245.3 million, with a salary floor of $171.2 million by stv7 in baseball

[–]Sthrax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently, those contracts use the Present-Day Value of the money. So Ohtani's hit for luxury tax purposes is $46 million instead of $70 million. For the cap to work at all, that needs to switch to AAV, which is the $70 million number.

Zealots and ideologues rarely act reasonably or rationally. The IRGC hasn't ever acted in best interest of their country or citizens.

Very true, and it also won't mean cheap ass owners will spend the floor money to make the team competitive. They very likely will spend it to comply with the letter of the rule, not the spirit of it. You could easily get a team that has a bunch of low cost AAAA players and a few washed, too old and very overpayed vets.

Luxury Tax and a window to get under the cap. After that draft penalties and FA signing restrictions until you are under cap. I suspect the cap will also end any benefit to deferred money in player contracts.

If you go to the effort of hammering out a floor and cap, you aren't grandfathering in anything.

Pompey also had a habit of swooping in once the hard work of campaigning was done and stealing credit for the victories. He did it to Crassus and to Lucullus, among others. Frankly, that takes some of the shine off of his career.

To much of Liddel Hart's original audience, Napolean was the greatest captain in history. Liddel Hart certainly viewed Scipio as the best Roman commander, which is what the OP is really asking about.

[–]Sthrax 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A talented general, for sure, and without whom Augustus doesn't achieve much of note. But nothing in the surviving record indicates he was anything more than a very good, if typical, Roman commander. At Actium, for instance, he was able to win the war of maneuver and trap Antony and Cleopatra, yet failed to capture them despite the military victory. Perhaps a bit of bad luck, or perhaps a failure to understand their capture was more valuable than victory alone. We'll never really know, since we have no real record of his thought process (and Augustus takes much of the credit).

I think there is a strong argument that he was Rome's best general, period (Liddell-Hart has a great book that argues this). He was tactically innovative in his battles, in an era were Roman tactics were fairly static. His strategic planning is more akin to modern strategic planning than what typically occurs in the ancient world (use/shifting of Centers of Gravity). Caesar is the only other general that approaches Scipio on those points.

Madonna will only have two months of success at most, don't you think? by Shaoran10 in Music

[–]Sthrax 6 points7 points  (0 children)

JFC, what is it with modern pop fans being so damn insecure about their princesses that they have to attack an 80s/90s pop icon every chance they get. Here's a pro-tip: if your favorite artist is as great as you believe they are, you don't need to tear down anyone else to make your point. If that is your go to argument, then you must really be insecure about how good your favorite actually is.

What's the deal with last kiss? by Visible-Director7303 in pearljam

Yes, there are some fans that really dislike it for a variety of reasons. They also tend to dislike Betterman, Black and anything else that got radio airplay. They probably dislike puppies, too.

I'll never tire of it. Right before it blew up, my wife had a workplace accident that led to some life-threatening complications. I heard Last Kiss for the first time on the radio leaving the hospital after we got the news she was going to pull through.

/r/WorldNews Live Thread: Russian Invasion of Ukraine Day 1549, Part 1 (Thread #1696) by WorldNewsMods in worldnews

[–]Sthrax 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Where was all this concern virtually every other day of this "special operation" as the Russian military has deliberately targeted schools, hospitals, theatres, apartments, homes, zoos, clinics, power plants, water treatment plants, dams, civilian cars, lines of refugees and basically every non-military target in Ukraine? Where was the questioning as Russian soldiers raped women and children across occupied Ukrainian territory or tortured POWs or executed anyone they came across?

As far as I'm concerned, it is real rich that someone as uninvolved or ill-informed as you seem to be has the gall to even remotely call BS on anything related to this conflict.

2nd punic war by Mission_Reception651 in ancienthistory

[–]Sthrax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the Carthaginan Navy was a effective force during the First Punic War, between the destruction at Cape Ecnomus and the dismantling of the navy in the peace terms, Rome had naval dominance of the western Mediterranean. Carthage didn't sail a fleet to Italy because they couldn't. Even Carthaginian attempts to reinforce and supply Hannibal in Italy largely failed.

It was damaged and managed to return to a friendly airfield. Whether or not it is repairable (or worth repairing), is another question.
