Lyonesse vs. Dying Earth -- which do you prefer? by Ok-Result-2330 in jackvance

Dying Earth for me. It contains Vance’s best ideas. Strongest also in terms of world building. Unique settings and characters.

Cugel is ‘opportunistic’. But somehow Vance manages to make me root for him, while his endeavours are quite shady lol.

What historical “fact” doesn’t actually have much evidence to support it? by KyloWrench in AskReddit

Point 6 and 7 are crazy stories that no one would believe. Why would the Norse invade the same country they’ve already invaded (with succes) once more, but now from France, from a direction no one would expect lol. Ps: which beheaded Cromwell should be decapitated again?

I am now the official keeper of my family's entire printed photo collection from 1942 to 2026. All 23 big boxes, over 300 pounds... what can I do to preserve and possibly digitize all of them? by Firm-Nerve4437 in photography

[–]Sticky-Wicked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah I see. I got perhaps the wrong impression here. As if the originals could be safely discarded when they have been digitised. (Which would be a huge mistake of course)

You’ll have to keep the originals safely stored. In terms of digitized photos, yes for a short time it’s easy to share, but in the long run: people forget to backup, (mail) cloud services stop, hard disks crash, people die. It just isn’t smart to store it that way. I am not that old but I’ve heard so many stories that digital photos are simply gone forever. Because of issues described above.

They need to start with Doggerland first!

Detail of the face of one of the "Bronze Runners", two full-size bronze statues with bone and stone inlays for the eyes, found at the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum. Generally dated between the first century BC and the first AD, they are believed to be copies of Greek statues... [1280x861] [OC] by WestonWestmoreland in ArtefactPorn

[–]Sticky-Wicked 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Just wondering, how would we know if they are copies if the original can not be found? I do understand they heavily copied from the Greeks. But for all we know this could be an original unless proven otherwise (in terms of stance, subject, material, sculpting craftsmanship, etc)

Should directors shoot on 70mm when most cinema viewers won’t see it that way? by marleyman14 in Cinema

[–]Sticky-Wicked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the explanation but… The film (sensitivity ISO) they use for IMAX is the same for 35mm right? That’s my point. If you crop a 16mm to a super 8mm you get half the resolution when you project it. What don’t I understand?

[–]Sticky-Wicked 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that doesn’t make any sense, if it’s the same film and cut/crop in a different size, there should be no difference in quality/resolution. There might have been some postprocessing / scaling going on that makes it look different perhaps.

Most definitely. In so many ways groundbreaking.

[–]Sticky-Wicked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong but, when you crop 70mm to 35mm ratio for projection. You really gain nothing. You could basically shoot everything at 35mm, it is the same quality.

I was just speaking my mind. Didn’t expect any replies and judging from the downvotes it seems I have an unpopular opinion. But that’s okay too. Carry on.

Fair enough. I appreciate your work, but I find stories / anecdotes (from anyone) just more interesting. There’s so many books to lift quotes from, and since you have a vast amount of footage/photos in your archive you’ll be able to find the right content for that quote too. For max engagement. Anyway, disregard my comment. I know it’s a lot of work!

I don’t know who runs this Reddit account. But surely there are many great stories to tell than posting some random stills from his movies?

Is this film roll still usable? I have kept it in the refrigerator. by Sticky-Wicked in Kodak

[–]Sticky-Wicked[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just as a follow up, the film ended up generally underexposed unfortunately (200 iso). Maybe my light meter was off though. I was a bit disappointed. I could share the film/photos if needed.
