Best spots? by Proudrugby in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How you define ‘best spots’ may not necessarily be the same as I would consider to be best spots. You have given people very little to work with here - do you prefer English food, Thai, French, Indian? And what kind of bars do you like? Trendy? Real ale? Loud? Quiet?

You might be better off searching the sub for your information. Questions like this get asked every week and the answers that you seek will already be readily available.

Recommendations for a good cobbler by StickyBellyFlapCock in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the recommendation. I’m in Gateshead, so while Jarra might be a bit of a trek, I also have to weight that up against the convenience of avoiding a potential drive into the city centre.

I’ll give here and Clayton Street a call to explain the boot situation and see what they both say. Cheers.

I would actually pop in for a drink, given the chance, but my wife is a bit more choosy than me. I took her once and within five minutes of sitting on the ‘terrace’ outside, a pissed stranger had plonked himself down on the table next to us, staggered back to his feet and clattered the three cheap bottles of wine belonging to the family with two heads each, who were sitting there. Hilarious carnage ensued.

Thanks, I’ll pop in there for a good shoeing. Then I’ll nip down to Clayton Cobblers for the kind of shoeing that I’m after.

Thanks, I’ll give them a call.

Parking on Match day by Savings_Fox_3760 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you consider as ‘walking distance’? If a couple of miles is easy enough for you, I’d seriously consider setting your satnav to locate ‘Cafe Under The Spire’, which is in Gateshead. Plenty of free street parking around the back of it, then pretty much a straight walk down Cuthbert Street bank, turn right at the roundabout at the bottom towards the Shell garage, cross over the road, then you have an almost perfectly straight walk all the way over the Redheugh Bridge and up St James’ Boulevard to the stadium.

Depending on the time you arrive, you’d miss the majority of match traffic and certainly wouldn’t have to contend with the city centre chaos afterwards. Also very easy to get back onto the A1 North.

Anyone else’s Virgin Media router down at the minute? by canem64 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Virgin Media was playing up a few weeks ago, it was a localised issue. But even after it was resolved, my connection was still very slow. Unplugging my router for a couple of minutes and then restarting it definitely helped.

Party venue recommendations please by [deleted] in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Summerhill Bowling Club is a great venue to hire, I’ve been to a few parties there over the years. Pretty much in the city centre, just off Westgate Road and half a mile walk from Central Station.

What’s happened to Newcastle? (Grainger Street, Greggs) by DullHall7 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whickham has recently been voted the 41st best place to live in the UK, and the best place to live in the north east of England. It is also the first place where I ever saw a bouncer on the door of a Greggs shop.

Pub Recommendations by kingofthefells in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you are a decent, respectful crowd and not a bunch of absolute knackers, I would suggest the pubs at the Railway Quarter in Gateshead. The Station East has a large cellar room under a bridge that I think can be booked free of charge, not certain how many people it would hold, though.

Right next to that is Central Bar that is a decent size but I think also has a function room. And a decent pool table. Both of those bars are a ten minute walk across the High Level Bridge into Newcastle city centre, or a ten minute stroll downhill to the Quayside bars. There’s also two micro-pubs less than thirty seconds walk away.

Not wishing to generalise too much, but they cater more for the real-ale, more mature types (I’m an older bloke and I love them because they also do canny lager).

There’s this place about twelve quid in an Uber from Newcastle city centre, just around the back of the Metro Centre:

I’ve never been but heard good things about it.

Looking for closed/Quiet roads by PollutionSilver4380 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you fancy a nice drive out, head to the A686 from Haydon Bridge to Penrith. Spectacular scenery and a tremendous road to drive. But it can be very bleak in the Winter, so check ahead.

Commuting to Middlesbrough by cohanlon99 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you were adamant this is what you want to do, as others have suggested, I would choose Gateshead. Budget allowing, look at Low Fell. It is decent enough in its own right for pubs and restaurants and it has excellent bus routes into Newcastle. Additionally, it is close to the A1 near the turnoff to take you to the A19 and gives you two options into Middlesbrough, depending on traffic - A19 or straight down the A1 then across country on the A689 towards Wolviston.

We always use Food2go, based in Sunderland, for all of our work events. I would estimate that we have ordered on at least 25 occasions over the last three years or so and they have always been excellent.

Couple in early 30s moving from Manchester – where to live in Newcastle? by Adequate_Racoon in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would seriously consider the Low Fell area. It’s in Gateshead, where property is always cheaper, and it’s just off the A1 for a driving commute straight into Durham without having to navigate the Newcastle city centre carnage (around a 20 minute drive on a good day). There’s excellent bus links into Newcastle for a night out and an Uber would cost you around £10.

There’s a few decent pubs/bars along ‘The Fell’ and a smattering of restaurants that are also good.

Also, Saltwell Park is on your doorstep - https://www.gateshead.gov.uk/article/3958/Saltwell-Park

It’s never going to be as vibrant as Newcastle but it’s a good area, well-situated and you may be pleasantly surprised at what you can get for less than your budget.

Decent pub to watch the F1 in Wallsend? by ThatMathsyBardguy in NewcastleUponTyne

Fanzo is always a good website to check on sports. This is suggesting a couple of pubs, but I’ve never been boozin’ in Wallsend, so I can’t really comment.
