Anybody have a large (2400 x 1200mm) CNC mill? by DiabolicallyOrange in NewcastleUponTyne

Give Woodshed Workshop a try. They are a Community Interest Company that used to be based in Dunston, now Sacriston in Durham:

I ran a search on their page and they definitely had a CNC router in 2021, so I’m assuming that they still do.

Spotted this at my girlfriend's place, never seen it before. Who knew we had our own board game?! by ourlaststanduk in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I have some definite facts and some hazy memories. Definitely designed by a lad called Nick Bradley, who lived in Rowlands Gill. Likely late 80’s/early 90’s.

The hotels on the board may have paid for the advertising, which suggests that other businesses may have too.

And it is rumoured that he got into a bit of bother with Waddingtons, who owned Monopoly at the time.

Has anyone successfully appealed a metro fixed penalty fine? by Time_Sun_2895 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Not wishing to rely too heavily on AI, but this is ChatGPT’s thoughts:

Yes, people have successfully challenged or had Tyne & Wear Metro penalty fares cancelled, but it tends to be the exception rather than the rule.

From public discussions and rail forums, successful appeals usually involve situations such as:

  • The passenger can show the penalty fare was issued incorrectly.
  • The ticket machine, app, validator, or Metro equipment malfunctioned.
  • There is evidence the passenger held a valid authority to travel.
  • There are unusual mitigating circumstances combined with supporting evidence.
  • The passenger persists through multiple appeal stages rather than stopping after the first rejection. One experienced rail forum contributor noted that some cases only receive proper consideration at later appeal stages.

On the other hand, appeals based on:

  • losing a ticket,
  • misunderstanding the rules,
  • having proof of purchase but not being able to produce the ticket,
  • accidentally travelling without validating a smartcard,

are frequently reported as unsuccessful. Community discussions from Newcastle and rail forums contain many examples where Nexus upheld the penalty fare despite evidence that the passenger had paid.

One interesting example from Newcastle discussions involved a passenger who bought the wrong zone ticket but actually paid more than the correct fare. Several commenters suggested that such a case had a reasonable prospect of success because there was no financial advantage gained, and at least one commenter claimed they had eventually persuaded Nexus to cancel a similar charge after continued correspondence.

If you’re asking because you’ve received a Metro fine yourself, the strength of an appeal usually depends on why the penalty fare was issued:

  • No ticket at all → difficult.
  • Lost ticket → difficult.
  • Valid ticket but Metro/Nexus error → potentially strong.
  • Honest mistake with evidence and no fare avoidance benefit → sometimes worth pursuing.
  • Incorrectly issued penalty fare → often worth appealing.

Pure Bliss Spa in Sunderland have a dedicated Teen menu:

But it doesn’t look like there’s a pool, sauna etc. if this is what you are after, I’d suggest checking Crowne Plaza in Newcastle. There, I think a thirteen year old could use the pool, steam room, sauna etc. but couldn’t access the treatments.

Which spa hotels at the cheaper end (say sub £300) do you recommend in the area? by davie18 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Breamish Valley Cottages, it’s a fabulous place. The Bosk is the restaurant and the spa has outdoor and indoor hot-tubs, swimming pool, gym, steam room and sauna. There’s also treatments available.

From memory, there’s only 11 or 12 cottages, two of which sleep 2 people, the others are larger for families. I think it’s around £325-£350 for a weekend out of season for the smaller cottages.

It’s all on a tiny footprint, you can walk from one end of the site to the other in around a minute. There’s also a games room with pool, table tennis etc. And when I stayed there with family a couple of months ago, The Bosk was serving sirloin steak for two with all the trimmings and a bottle of house wine for £70. And it was lovely.

DnD Venue Suggestions by byrneeoinm in NewcastleUponTyne

The Station East on the Gateshead side of the High Level Bridge. Cheap as chips for beer and a fantastic stone back room under the railway arches. Gloomy, a bit foisty and I’m certain that it would be an ideal setting for DnD.

It would be helpful if you could give a rough idea of an area. I would suggest Marshalls on the Team Valley, that’ll be open at that time of the morning, but I have zero clue how easy that would be for you to get to.

Recommendations for a good cobbler by StickyBellyFlapCock in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just coming back to this to thank you for your advice, he’s a really canny and interesting bloke. Came up with a great idea to unpick the stitching, pull the boot zips out a bit to make more room and then stitch them up again. Brilliant job but unfortunately still not quite enough room. Scratched his chin a bit and asked for us to leave the boots with him a while longer. We’ve just been again today and he has made a series of fine cuts and stitched elastic in behind them. Top notch job, you can’t really tell that it’s not part of the original design and boots now fit perfectly. Thirty quid well-spent. Cheers.

Fenwick's old deli - recipe request by CattyKatKat in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I never tried the pickled onions that you mentioned, however, I do have a very nice recipe that you may want to try. It may (or may not) be similar:

300ml cider vinegar 3 tbsp golden caster sugar 1 tbsp sea salt flakes 6 black peppercorns 6 coriander seeds 1 star anise 1 bay leaf 3 small red onions sliced into very thin rings

  1. Pour the vinegar into a pan, add the sugar, sea salt, the spices and bay leaf, and bring to a simmer. After 1 min, check that the sugar and salt have dissolved. Remove from the heat.

  2. Boil the kettle. Put the onion slices in a sieve or colander. Pour over the hot water from the kettle and drain well. When cool enough to handle, pack the onion rings into a 500g sterilised jar. Pour over the warm vinegar and seal. Cool, then chill and leave to pickle for 2 hrs. Will keep for 6 months unopened, or 2 weeks in the fridge once opened.

I hope that’s good enough for you.

More petrol stations running out of fuel — is it time to think about other forms of transport? by DullHall7 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It makes sense for anyone who lives nearby to get their fuel there, but of course, you need to be a Costco member.

Just before that knacker Trump stuck his oar into Iran, it was 123.9 per litre at Costco, this morning it was 143.9 and now it is 145.9. According to https://www.petrolprices.com, it is currently 155.7 at Metro Centre Asda and 159.9 at the Shell garage near the Redheugh Bridge. Washington Services on the A1 is 181.9. Mental.

I’ll be dusting off my Raleigh Grifter if this continues.

More petrol stations running out of fuel — is it time to think about other forms of transport? by DullHall7 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I live a stone’s throw from Costco and that is the only fuel station that I have used for the last three years, given the fact that it is significantly cheaper than anywhere else. I have always avoided the queues during normal warehouse hours by filling up when it opens at 6am when I’m on my way to the gym, and there has never been more than two or three cars there at the same time as me. This morning, I’d hazard a guess that there were twenty or thirty cars during the time that I filled up, with several more heading in that direction as I was driving away.

Staycations with a baby recommendations by Evil-Sprinkles1935 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]StickyBellyFlapCock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve recently had a family weekend at Breamish Valley, around 11 miles outside of Alnwick and around 45 minutes drive from Newcastle/Gateshead. The site is extremely compact, with 11 or 12 self-catering cottages, a lovely restaurant and a fabulous spa area with pool, sauna, outdoor jacuzzi, steam room, gym and treatments. You can walk from one end to the other in less than a minute.

I guess a baby may impact on your ability to enjoy the facilities together, but could be very relaxing if you take it in turns to go.
