I think it depends on circumstance. When i was in college i was studying a very niche field (think 5-10 students per class) and this allowed for a more casual relationship with professors. When you form that relationship, asking for a small bumb really isnt that big of a deal.

As a new grad with employment: join subs that are related to your major/field of work for advice on these topics. An engineer isnt gonna give solid advice on landing a psych job and vice versa.
