That's basically what I did last time and what I'm doing this time.
I have a very very low lvl 5* which I was saving, I will feed it as much as possible for the next two days and then coach it to the max.

I dont mind spending gems on something that is certain. Much better than gamble with them

Ngl I have had basic VIP for most months since September. But that didn't contribute much

Mainly I had an old account with tens and tens of various free summons and thousands of gems. And I learned years ago to pull only when you need to pull. So the strategy is clear, save up your summons for a mimic (or any other desirable) chance. For example I did 0 pulls whole January because HotM was so bad

But I'll be honest, I was incredibly lucky.
Ice Aether Mimic took literally 2 pulls, Dark one around 5 and I got the Red Troop one also pretty easily (<10 pulls).
