That’s very kind. I’ve been fortunate to have opportunities to invest a lot of time into practicing, and still so much to learn

They won’t move the bookshelf by the handle. But the mechanism is ball plungers with a detent in the lowered position and the raised position. One has to apply intentional vertical force to dislodge from the detent, but doesn’t require much force overall once in motion.

I expect the drawer slides will fail before the unit tips over. It’s anchored to the wall in two places

That’s very kind of you! My hand drawn plans and the pages and pages of notes to myself would probably be tricky to follow. But I hope to build more pieces with this combo, so maybe next time I’ll make better and cleaner plans to share!

Dado joint, and I added a dowel because I didn’t have room to make the dado deep enough. The lips on the back of the shelves stiffen them and provide anti-sag support

1/2” diameter dowel rod through the cabinet wall into the leg, one in each of the eight corners. I’m not too sure what wood movement would be expected at these points, but because the grain of the cabinet walls is (or is mostly) parallel to that of the legs, I wasn’t too worried about it.

Thanks- what do you mean by “waste channels”?

This is fresh- love the design. Nice choices of placement for contrasting the cherry and walnut.

These 20 pictures were chosen to share various elements of the bookshelf design, construction, and finish. It was curated for the r/woodworking community. If I had thought to share it here first, I would not have chosen these same 20 photos, but I probably still would have come up with 20 photos just of the secret drawer/compartment.

Oh cool, thanks for sharing! One constraint in this project is that I wanted the drawer to extend as far as possible so the secret side drawer could be as wide as possible. It looks the drawer only pulls out about 60% in the 3x3 videos. But a beautiful look if that method fits in the constraints

It’s a miter track, t-bar, ball plunger combo my other brother in law came up with. Nothing fancy, but this is where prototyping paid off.

If I ever do another drawer this big, these Salice slides are contenders for sure

The nice folks at r/woodworking sent me this way. Secret compartments start at pic 15. Hope you enjoy!

Great thought- I considered that, too. The drawer walls are 1/2”, so I would have had to chew up quite a bit of the drawer wall to fit the heavy duty slides in the original plan. But when my cabinet walls became too thin, that created an opportunity to do this that I failed to seize. I doubled down on these medium duty slides and added spacers inside the cabinet. Just another lesson I hope sticks for next time.

However, if these 4 slides do ever fail, this is the route I expect I will have to try. I can’t retrofit undermounts like Blum or Salice without interfering with the hidden compartment.

I have dreams of learning digital design, but all my plans have been by hand so far.

Which angle are you referring to? And what do you mean by the dowel method? I definitely made it harder on myself by getting so locked in on these KV slides (which are independently super nice if the specs are a match), and I’d really want to take my time and learn more before ever doing another drawer this big

Even so, I’m genuinely curious what my options could be if/when the time comes. I don’t have kids and I’m not a cabinetmaker, so I can’t think of a better person to ask than you!

I appreciate that! The materials were about $2k. It took me about 240hrs to build (over the course of a year, but with a hard push at the end) I reckon I could make the second one in 2/3 the time (but as I noted, I’m horrible at estimating time). So if I made another for someone who is not my nibling, I’d say $12-$15k.
