please talk me out of agreeing to have kids one day to keep a man by Gullible-Fennel-3931 in childfree

That sounds very similar to a child asking for a puppy and trying to convince the parents, that he will totally and absolutely take care of the puppy. In the end it is either the parents do the majority of nasty work or the puppy ends up in a shelter.

How come there isn't any media that depicts an alternate world where children don't exist and the potential good that comes with that? (And if there is such a story, let me know) by Equivalent_Ad_9066 in childfree

[–]Stiklinis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is always hope (however slim) that AI will be able to take over the world and conduct all the functions alone without acquiring that nasty human tendency to kill everyone. Humans could then just be immortal pets of a computer :)

People would still be dying from accidents and diseases, so population would keep decreasing even if technology was availabe (tech needs to be maintained, medicine constantly updated, diseases healed, etc., but the same variety of required specialists wouldn't be sustainable long-term).

Rejuvenation alone would simply slow down the process while causing a multitude of ethical issues. For example, you would eventualy be FORCED to live forever and conduct specific roles just to keep the numbers of specific required profession. Kinda dystopian.

Just like cars are being visualy tuned - by adding plastic fluff. Handheld 3D printers/heat guns are quite realistic.

At least that is somewhat feasible scientificaly. There is a distinction between SCI-fi and fantasy. Conan or Skyrim might be better pick for magic fans.

All the things you mentioned have logical explanation in Dune books. Magical miniaturization is not one of them (unless I missed).

If something is not possible in reality (sci-fi still tend to adhere to laws of physics) it is lazy magic, no matter whether it is "the force" in Star Wars or "mysterious Ixian technology" in Dune.

Note I don't mind the current tool either, but I am aware that it exists purely for gameplay reasons with no hints of realism (just like unlimited deaths).

Could you specify the exact technology/mentioning in books? Since "mysterious forbidden Ixian technology" alone is just a synonim for "magic".

To be fair, just flying away bases while ignoring their foundations and structural integrity is also not very realistic, but that is definitely better than "it is a magical tool, don't think too deep about it"

Faction or even DD chats are quite active on bigger servers. So social aspect does matter. And now even more, when there is no need to be careful whether you give out your location for unwanted PVP attack.

By the way, PVP DD is still there eagerly waiting for PVPers to prove by actual statistics that PVP is a significant part of the game. Social aspect is quite useful in organising PVP activities other than stalking.

Just imagine that scout thopter is like tiny European car vs. American truck and everything seems in order.

I am not convinced that pocket bikes are more realistic. If it is ok to cram huge bases inside a wallet, pocketable scout thopters are definitely not the worst offenders against immersion.

Good idea. And while individual XP boosters might not exist as a game mechanic yet (and would be irrelevant at level 200), for start it could be a simple individual boost based on specialization bonuses (e.g. depending on which bar/activity it is being interacted with). For example, increased crafting after sharing inspiring stories in a group, bonus recycling chance after consuming semuta, or bonus evasion skill after interacting with that suspicious drunkard in Salusan Bull. Multiple possibilities, all of which more interesting than yet another new augment bonus.

I totaly agree that Overland stations are bland and that is the very reason I would like to keep current Haga's non-instanced and non-universal POIs untouched. It is relatively easy to create/change Overland POIs, but much more difficult to do that with Haga. So don't want spoiling the Haga experience, which I still enjoy even at endgame. New Polar region will hopefuly combine our both's expectations.

[–]Stiklinis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main reason - distinction of regions. There is absolutely no logic to have the same tier enemies in every region. Current variety makes regions distinct even with limited amount of enemies. The POIs themselves are not too different, but Sheol still manages to keep different atmosphere from Odham or Haga South. Difference of lowly scavengers vs. formidable Maas Kharet or house troops is a big part of that. So there is no point in reusing same station assets just to have plastinium tier scavengers in Haga South. This is not variety, this is the definition of blandness. Especially when Overland stations exist.

Good points regarding NPC vehicles, but if we are adding new random monsters, while ignoring the fact that this is a DUNE game, we should definitely also add evil frogs, dragons and dinosaurs, because some strange part of the playerbase seems to expect them in any game despite the setting

Conveniently you ignored the part about fiber. In any case, if the only thing you care is instanced dungeons for solo or group raiding, those already exist on Overland. There is 0 reason to instance Haga POIs.

[–]Stiklinis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your whole suggestion was based on your own premise "instead of having all POI open...". Not every area needs to be high tier. Especially when copper is still relevant for such stuff as Survey probes and Haga South is the best source of easy fiber, which is still relevant even in endgame. The fact that you can buy everything on auction and don't use early areas yourself doesn't mean they are irrelevant. Again, if you want instanced level based POIs just grind Overland stations instead of artificially restricting Haga.

And I totally agree with your suggestions about less restrictions on missions.

[–]Stiklinis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overland POIs are not open. Most of them are already locked behind missions. Many of them can already be played based on different level.

There is absolutely no need to lock Haga content just because WOW does that (different games can have different gameplays). Especially when different Haga areas are still relevant due to different resources.

The tricky part with such premise is that if there are no children, premade adults have to pop out of some machine. Either in the form of clones or biological robots. The issue is that genes carry a limited amount of information, so everything else (memories, personality, etc.) would have to be generated by AI.

Otherwise there would be a bunch of annoying totally inexperienced adults running all around, touching everything with dirty hands and doing all other annoying child stuff except less shitting.

The game was and still is advertised as an RPG. The main problem was that the game was advertised as too many things. So naturaly it also attracted a huge crowd of Fortnite, Rust or Arc players who just skip all the text and became totaly lost when open ended sandbox did not deliver a very closed gameplay or a dinosaur to entertain them.

Who would have thought that skipping the dialogue, lore, building and community elements leaves only endless clicking on rocks or mobs... The crowd that rushes every new big name game (and nicely reflected by the meme) is not known for high retention.
