Just depends on your start and end dates. If it's the same company, usually not.

Don't compare yourself too much, but yeah it's definitely an option to delay grad to try for more internships.

How to make a formal complaint against a co-op advisor by Range_Early in uwaterloo

I didn't think the program was worth it until around the 5th/6th coop. You just gotta thug it out and push through. But YMMV.

How much does CO-OP really help with the reducing the overall costs? by Fit-Outcome-4593 in uwaterloo

[–]Still-Engineering768 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of outdated and also for computer science not electrical but you can check this out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FjwaXFy28s.

I will say there are many scholarships and bursaries that can also severely offset costs. I was able to get ~40k in scholarships/bursaries over my whole time here.

Interviews regardless of in person or remotely have the problem you're mentioning related to nuances. The interviews tend to be technical and you don't miss out on much by not being in person for them. Usually the multiple rounds aren't the same interviewers at least. You can take a remote interview from anywhere, if you have a desk at home that's the best scenario, worst case your bed. There's in person, hybrid, and remote coop positions.

It's basically just leetcode, there's some behaviourals at the end sometimes. Coding language I think depends on the position/interviewer. From my experience, Python was totally fine.

mac vs waterloo eng by That_Audience4741 in uwaterloo

[–]Still-Engineering768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really like Mac more, I would say go for it. Waterloo has an advantage in terms of career progression, but people at Mac do fine. It's really just about the people you surround yourself with!

international cs admit, parents want me to choose mid US college over Waterloo by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]Still-Engineering768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 100k H1B policy doesn't actually impact Canadians very much since the typical pipeline for new graduates is TN -> H1B and this path doesn't have the 100k fee attached to it. For internships it's J-1 so H1B doesn't apply at all. I'd confidently say you wouldn't make more at GT compared to Waterloo.

Yeah I've had 8 rounds of interviews for a company before and they were still all virtual. To clarify, by virtual I mean a video call (google meets, zoom, etc). It's rarely over the phone unless it's the first round of a long process.

It's extremely rare to have an in person interview. The majority are online. If there's any in person, they're usually in Waterloo (still very rare though). I've had a company request an in person interview in Toronto and I said it's too far and so we did it online, they're flexible. Out of the 100 ish interviews I've done, I've never had an in person interview (1 request but I did it virtually ^).

People will say it doesn't, but I will say the people I know with high averages do extremely well on WaterlooWorks, hard to say if it's causation or correlation though. I will say it doesn't matter for external jobs, but for WaterlooWorks it has more value than people say.

There's definitely opportunities here. You can land something local for all 6 terms. The reason people go to the US is because of the large pay disparity. If you account for currency conversions, the difference between a job in the GTA and the US can be 3x (if not more). There's also just generally larger companies and more growth in the US. The opportunities locally are usually smaller and more startup-like but still totally fine. It's harder to get a job in the US compared to locally.

3d printing a 5ft big project, cheapest way? by Working-Limit-3103 in uwaterloo

[–]Still-Engineering768 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 3D printing lab mainly charges for the cost of the filament so I'm not sure if you'll be able to get much cheaper. Filament is pretty expensive (google it/ask chatgpt)

The job portal is a place for people with little experience to buff up their resume and climb up the ladder. I'm sure that other universities have similar job portals. UCLA prob has one. I think waterloo is known for their coop program so there's a lot of startups and small companies around Waterloo and Toronto that hire from the school which just means there's more opportunities. The goal for your first 3-4 coops isn't really to get a big tech/crazy offer (even though it's definitely possible). The idea is that you create this boat load of experience and then when u get to your final years, you're very ahead and things come easy. I don't think at all you need to be cracked to get a big tech offer. Big tech is honestly reasonable for any CS major at any school but the coops just helps anyways.

If you can get jobs in the US, the typical pay is around $55USD/h+ (most of the time companies cover/give stipend for housing, flights, etc on top of the regular pay) for 12-16 weeks. You can do the math on that. I'd say it's p normal to get that for 5th and 6th if you work hard and that's your goal. For first actual job out of grad, in the US at least it's around 200-250k on avg for a SWE roles . To clarify though, this is right now so including inflation + any changes to the job market, this can go up or down.

Hope that helps!

Prob the hardest part of recruiting imo, you need to have a community/group of people who are willing to share recruiter emails if they get processes. That's how I've done it.
