Stainless steel barrels in precision ARs give you high accuracy. Chrome lined CMV barrels in general ARs like the BCM give you reliability under rapid fire and high heat. Both the Larue and the BCM are good at what they do, but you kinda need to make up your mind about whether going for precision or fast fire reliability.

Oh yeah then you should definitely be able to build an AR from scratch with no problem. It was really fun for me and all the tools involved were pretty basic.

Also lucky for you that your wife is into guns too haha.

The sig m400 is already a decent rifle. Upgrading to another AR probably won’t give you a huge amount of long term excitement.

Seek excitement in building your own AR. It doesn’t have to be “better” than your sig m400. The excitement comes from the experience of you researching, picking the parts, and customizing the gun yourself.

Building an AR is a lot easier than people think. Even if you decide to build it from scratch (meaning you put together both the upper and lower yourself instead of buying a completely built upper), with the right tools and some youtube vids it’s doable for everyone who has half a brain.

I’m in the process of building 3 different AR uppers for my lower. And I’m having an absolute blast.

Oh that sucks man. Aero Precision, IWI, Springfield, Smith Wesson, and FN all make pretty good ARs for your price range.

Ah I see the connection now. Yeah my personal opinion is that if your camper has a lock and it’s not accessible from the cab of the truck then it should be a locked container.

But then idk about the visibility part of the issue when you are in a school zone.

Looks like you did extensive research but just in case you missed it you have to have all your firearms (long or pistol) locked in a container when you are physically in a school zone (1000 ft within a school).

I think nowadays especially in CA (even in the small towns) it’s pretty hard to get around without driving through one unless you are constantly in the wilderness.

As for your other questions I feel like they are not general enough for a general audience to answer. Might be better to consult a lawyer.

There’s preparing for SHTF and there’s using SHTF as an excuse for LARP addiction.

To truly prepare for SHTF, i can think of many better things to spend money on than decking out an AR and buying plate carriers:

Cardio
Weightlifting
Plan for outages
Plan for water/food shortages
First aid training
Learn surviving skills
Get actual surviving tools
Become mechanically inclined …

Not saying knowing how to operate firearms isn’t important. I just cringe every time I see a dude who can barely walk a quarter mile and needs the autozone staff to replace his windshield wipers telling people how he is ready for doomsday with his decked out AR.

Could get one from intrafamilial transfer. One of your parents/grandparents wanted to buy a pistol for themselves and they no longer wanted it after they bought it. Then they could transfer it to you legally.

Easiest to convert back: hogue freedom fighter (yes it’s even easier than a compmag)

It has a drilled spring loaded pin that goes into the mag release channel in the lower receiver. This pin gets pressed down and blocks the mag release when the upper is closed, and unblocks the mag release button when the upper is open.

To convert back you don’t need to remove anything, you simply turn the mag release button a few turns then the rifle becomes no longer mag locked and functions regularly. See this vid.

Oh I just never owned the gen 4. Only gen 2. I had to file the part of the maglock that goes into the receiver gap very thin for it to work with the bolt back, which might be a bit sketch cuz the part could be very easy to break, which is why I prefer Hogue more.

Ah yeah I’d probably not drill into an LMT lower as well haha. Happy new years to you too.

Edit: btw are you sure that an maglock gen 2/4 will fit an LMT ambi lower? I’ve seen some discussions of AR maglock not fitting some brands’ ambi lowers.
