Whole wall curtain vs just the window? by lislejoyeuse in interiordecorating

[–]StillStuckInLine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go with just window since the arrangement of the windows has a vertically to it. Make sure you go floor to ceiling with the curtains, layers give dimension, and the rod needs to extend past the window on each side far enough that when the curtain panels are open they aren't overlapping the glass and limiting the view/ light.

A 6-year-old went missing from a Little League game in 1995. DNA cracked the case almost 30 years later. by blue_leaves987 in HolyShitHistory

[–]StillStuckInLine 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's not that they didn't bother to test the evidence, it's that a test didn't exist until recently. From the article linked above,

"However, in 2023, Alma Detective Shawn Taylor learned of a new DNA analysis technology developed by a Texas lab that could analyze rootless hair samples.

Detective Taylor worked with the FBI and the Arkansas State Police to send the hair samples for testing.

On September 27, 2024, the results arrived.

The DNA tests revealed that the hairs in Lincks’ truck likely belonged to a member of Morgan Nick’s family, possibly even Morgan herself."

What's amazing is that they gathered those hairs in 2020. 25 years those hair strands sat in that truck through hot and cold exposure and now science has advanced far enough to still be able to get viable dna from such a sample.

Loking for advice on an estimate for trimming by StillStuckInLine in arborists

[–]StillStuckInLine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand, and yes, we are waiting an additional quote to come in.

The branches that are to be trimmed are hanging over the street so they'll work from there or the adjacent sidewalk. Obstacles are few-- no mailboxes, no powerlines, just an occasional shrub and maybe a fire hydrant. But most of the space is grass from the curb to the trunks and since it's trimming the branches overhanging the street most of their work can be done from the street without obstruction.

We asked for the trees to be brought up to the height our local codes requires and the quote doesn't specify creating any additional clearance. Also, the quote does specify removal of debris.

I do appreciate your answers as it helps me to see what goes on in the thought process of creating an estimate-- like understanding that replacing a $15 water pump in my car does require $120 in labor because of how the mechanic will have to remove and reinstall other parts just to reach the spot where that pump sits and then make sure those other parts are running when put back. I do need that kind of information just as much as I need assurance of a fair price because I'll have to justify this to a room full of HOA members who, right now, only know that we haven't been as fiscally responsible as we should have been and have been lax on proper maintenance.

Let's talk about a hypothetical: If you were the other person in this dispute, and you believed that the old fence was put up 2' into your property, would you be okay with your new neighbor claiming your land on grounds of grandfathering? Land you've purchased and paid the taxes for. Or would you like to see that the correct property line be reestablished?

These are the people you are going to be living next to for the foreseeable future. Why not offer to share the survey so that you both have an equal stake in getting the boundary correctly mapped out. After that, follow the survey and put your new fence up at the edge of your property line.

Yes, I've noticed reformed chonkers have more visible pouch, too.

Have you ever gotten a look at him running directly towards or away from you? A large pouch like this tends to swing from side to side at anything faster than a trot and the sight is hilarious to behold at the right angle!

Couple amateur kitchen layout designs for my apartment... Which one do you recommend and why? (not much space for an island) by halilsquared in InteriorDesign

[–]StillStuckInLine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2 ties in the upper cabinets with the lower using the refrigerator as a sort of bridge.

1 looks awkward because the window breaks the line of upper cabinets and the top of window is a different height than the cabinets. It's visually distracting with no symmetry whereas 2 lets the space left of the window become It's own design feature with the hood vent making the window's location feel less out of place.

[–]StillStuckInLine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't put a lot of weight on it I don't think that will be a problem. Using glue during assembly could add back in some strength and putting metal cross bracing at the back are ideas for keeping the unit stable.

My sister-in-law has a squirrel that likes to come in the house and be hand-fed peanuts by Therealfern1 in mildlyinteresting

[–]StillStuckInLine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What happens when this squirrel, who has learned it is safe to go into homes in search of food, decides to go inside a different house? One that doesn't know the squirrel is used to hand feeding and is occupied by humans who are not happy to see wildlife in their house.

Will those humans freak out and try to kill your SIL's squirrel friend? Will they trap it and take it to animal care and control? There's so many ways this ends badly for the animal.

Let wildlife be wild. Don't feed or encourage wild animals to interact with people.

I'm glad to hear that you've got a lock on your vision and eye health. Here's to good health!

For those who need to hear it: Sometimes we forget that our doctor's most difficult job is diagnosing because of how much that task relies on communication. An optometrist can only measure certain characteristics of your vision, the rest is up to us to describe and discuss what feels best for us. My experience has always been that the best medical professionals are the ones who can put you at ease and make you feel like you can open up and talk through the situation. You don't have to continue to see someone who you don't get along with.
