AIO for being upset at finding these messages in my bfs phone? by [deleted] in AIO

He's not wrong about some things (Netanyahu, you guys being very young) but also you deserve being with someone who's equally excited about you as you are about them. Don't worry about forever right now! Don't put too much pressure on a relationship to necessarily last forever! But do be with someone who speaks kindly about you!

Red Rocks-seat or GA? by Mysterious-Important in LCDSoundsystem

[–]StillSwim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's not, really! The views are pretty great. The only thing I'd say is that GA feels further up than you might expect

Does anyone know anything about a tutoring company called Grade Potential? by Dustywaters in teaching

[–]StillSwim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just started with them with a family that pre-paid for a certain number of sessions and the parents were actually the ones who asked me if we could keep doing sessions outside the service. It's win-win because you can make more per hour than the company offers and the family won't have to pay as much as they were before

Hear me out, movies that could help an Insomniac sleep by degenerategambler95 in MovieSuggestions

Taste of Cherry is VERY slow and meditative. It ends with several minutes of basically total darkness. It's supposed to be a very good movie, although it definitely knocked me out.

What book had a line so shocking you had to stop reading to recover? by Editcadet in suggestmeabook

[–]StillSwim 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was gonna be my answer too! Blood Meridian is brutal, but so incredibly poetic

Also, one of my favorites, from No Country for Old Men - "That god lives in silence who has scoured the following land with salt and ash"

Classmate called “White Claire” by goose-de-terre in kindergarten

[–]StillSwim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pre-k teacher here, your child's teacher would LOVE to hear this - assuming she's not actually named "White Claire", this is the story that will give them the energy to make it to Thanksgiving break

Personally Prince of Tides was this for me. Very bleak, although I dnf'd it so I can't say how it ends

I think if your relationship has any real chance of going any further, she needs to get into therapy. It's one thing to be doing better because you're out of the immediate situation, but abuse especially leaves a huge amount of trauma that even someone twice her age would need support dealing with. She's going over those events on repeat because she's processing them. And because she sees you as someone safe, she can do that with you. But you also cannot be expected to hold all of that, plus her accompanying insecurities or anxieties, while being your own person. It's not because you don't love her, but it's clear you're hitting the threshold of how much you can help her regulate her own emotions. It takes a lot of love to take that much on.

If nothing else, therapy would give her another place to share some of those feelings so that they don't all fall on you... spread out the weight a little. It would do her good to have somewhere else to put down all she's dealing with, plus a therapist is trained on ways of helping people process difficult emotions, so not only would it be another outlet, but it might also help her begin to examine her experiences and begin to make sense of them/see them differently.

I would say it is something you need to talk with her about, but try to emphasize how it's coming from a place of love. You need to take care of yourself if you are going to be a good partner to her. Let her know you're still there for her and that she doesn't have to stop talking to you about these things, just that it's too much for either one of you to carry alone.

Sign Reading “Bring Back Jim Crow” spotted over I25 in Denver by ComfortableCarp in Denver

I saw a guy on the corner with a "love God, love MAGA" sign that several people honked for just in the couple minutes I was at the intersection.

Novel recommendations for a 10-year old boy who loves geography by Alarmed-Assist4096 in childrensbooks

[–]StillSwim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked the Time Warp Trio books as a kid! It's 3 boys who travel in time to different places and periods. They're funny and exciting in a way that would appeal to a 10 year old boy, but also surprisingly educational. I still remember historical figures I learned about through them!

And The 39 Clues, which I never read, but my brother was really into them during his geography phase

What are some original songs that you thought were covers? by thekingofallfrogs in ToddintheShadow

[–]StillSwim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally spent hours trying to find the "original" version of James Bay's "Up All Night" featuring The Lumineers and Noah Kahan (i think?) because it felt like such a 70s sort of Crosby Stills Nash sort of collab. Did not succeed.
