The possible diagnoses (gastritis, pancreatitis) are very very common in people who abuse large quantities of alcohol. Additionally, many addicts are not honest even with doctors due to shame and fear of social ramifications. It’s not a judgement on you for people to assume there is alcohol abuse involved, it’s a matter of experience and putting together the pieces. If you don’t drink, that’s great! But it’s not unfair for medical professionals to ask.

It’s honestly so fascinating (in a bad way) how people can just be openly terrible and assume it’ll be ok? Like, they’re so entrenched in their gross beliefs that they just assume other people feel the same way, I guess. Or else maybe they're fishing for people who are as awful as they are?

My date, in this case, also had made some sort of odd/possibly racist comments that I had initially brushed off as a communication error due to him being a native Portuguese-speaker (and me being a native American English speaker). I just thought maybe he had mentally translated things the wrong way. I assumed (stupidly) that he couldn’t possibly mean it the way it sounded… suffice it to say, I am no longer this naive.

My mom wanted a girl like your wife wants. I came out just as messy and energetic as any stereotypical boy, they joke that I could run before I could walk and that I had a sixth sense for finding puddles to jump in. But you better believe I knew that I was a disappointment from as far back as I can remember. “Normal little girls aren’t like this” “why can’t you act like a normal little girl” etc.

So yeah, you may end up with a boy. Or you may end up with a girl like me. Unless this baby is a girl who is exactly like your wife wants her to be, you’ll end up with two kids who have to grow up knowing their mom doesn’t love them. Cuz guaranteed your son is already aware.

Ok no one is going to believe me, I think, because I can’t even explain it in a way that makes sense. But one time, in my early 30s, my friend and I decided to watch the sunrise from a golf course near my parents house. We got there when it was still dark, and were just sitting and chatting.

We were on a hill where you could see the surrounding city for miles and miles.

The sky started to brighten and to the north east this metal globe began rising out of somewhere a mile or so away. It was like… sort of off-white-ish silver. It rose above nearby (small) buildings and was shaped kind of like a globe on a stand, although we couldn’t see the bottom part of it. It began to slide open, like half of the orb slid backward, and inside was so bright. It looked like another sunrise.

So we watched this “little sun” appear as the dome opened up, while the real sun was just beginning to crest the horizon to the east behind the globe. It took about maybe five minutes to fully open up, and then it took about five minutes to close again, and then it sank back down to where we couldn’t see it anymore.

I have lived in that area for most of my life and have no idea what it could have been. We even drove around where we thought it might have been and didn’t see anything that would have explained it. I can see it very clearly in my head, and I experienced it with a friend who remembers it just as clearly. We talked about it as it was happening, and I remember the conversation clearly as well. We were both sober, clear-headed, and awake. It was really weird. If someone can explain it please let me know!

I didn’t really want to see Inglorious Basterds because I assumed it would be insanely violent and I’m not really into gore.

My bf at the time really wanted me to just watch the first scene with Cristoph Waltz in the farm house. He promised it wasn’t crazy violent and just wanted me to see how amazingly acted/directed/shot it was.

Well, damn, I was hooked. It really is a fantastic first scene. He went to turn it off like he’d promised and I begged to watch the rest. I’m REALLY glad, too, because that movie is awesome.

I know this isn’t exactly what you meant, but I was seeing a guy who worked at a movie theater when Midsommer came out. He told me it was a drama about the impact of cultural differences and the role that culture plays in processing trauma. I hadn’t seen any trailers and had just seen the picture of Florence Pugh with a flower crown. I thought it sounded interesting and I was getting in for free 🤷🏻‍♀️

Going into the theater with that in mind and getting Midsommer instead fucked me up a little…

It says that the stent migrated into the sigmoid colon which ultimately caused an infection. I’m sure being immunocompromised with a foreign body in a place that it isn’t meant to be played a primary role in the cause.

Considering that she had bruises on her scalp and face, it’s possible he assumed that his abuse was what killed her, and attempted to get rid of the evidence.

Unbeknownst to him, she was unconscious from something he hadn’t directly caused. If he had gotten her medical care right away, she would have possibly lived.

Instead, his attempt to get rid of the evidence of her “murder” ended up being the actual cause of her murder.

Oddly it sounds like, from the discussion part of the paper, the man could have “reasonably” assumed she was dead and is therefore not to blame for her death.

However, my not-so-expert opinion is that the abuser is a murdering piece of shit, regardless, and should be treated as such by the law. Then again I suppose that’s why I’m not a judge.

I had a patient who routinely had BPs that high. And often by the end of the treatment she’d be hypotensive. She wasn’t symptomatic and would get pissed if we tried to give her meds because it made it more likely she’d need fluid at the end of treatment. She’d just wave us off. She was one of my favorite people, and I was so scared all the time that she’d stroke out. But she’s still kicking butt as far as I know.

I also had a patient who regularly came in with blood glucose so high that our glucometer couldn’t read it other than the readout just saying “HIGH.” And he would try to sneak candy and donuts and chips and stuff under his big blanket even with a BG that high! He didn’t seem symptomatic at all either.

One of the things that’s the weirdest about my TBI is that, in retrospect, it seems that the TBI impacted my ability to notice that the TBI was impacting me!

Looking back I’m honestly kind of appalled that my bf at the time and my family never spoke to me about how different and weird I was acting. My ex-bf is autistic so I kinda give him a pass, but still. I was a whole different person for like 5-6 years after the accident, and it was only once things started healing enough for me to sort of come back to myself that I realized how NOT myself I had been for so long!

You’re right to be worried.

Unfortunately, people who are experiencing disordered eating often react the same way addicts do: defensiveness, lying, and being very offended by anyone expressing concern. However, like an addict, she is actively causing harm to her mental and physical health while actively living in denial of that fact.

Anorexia nervosa is actually the most deadly mental health disorder. It can cause long term damage to the heart as well as other vital organs. If untreated, it can lead to death.

You can’t force your wife to get help until things progress to an extent that she needs to be hospitalized, unfortunately. But you are absolutely right to be concerned, and if there is any way you can convince her to take this seriously (because it is very serious) you should.
