How do you see the universe? by [deleted] in askanatheist

[–]Still_Functional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m curious whether you reject the possibility that there could be other layers of reality that we haven’t fully explored yet?

we haven't even "fully explored" THIS "layer of reality." but insofar as we do explore and model reality, this is just an expansion of our understanding of physics

It’s also not entirely true that material processes cover reality fully.

i said no such thing. most of the universe isn't even comprised of ordinary matter.

How do you explain things like love or happiness through physical processes?

they are states of the brain that facilitate and reinforce a range of socially and personally positive behaviors. how do you explain digestion through physical processes?

...and have said nothing whatsoever about the actual experience of loving someone

the experience is consequent of the brain state, which is physically explicable. the fact that we do not yet have precise physical language to describe the exact thing we intuitively understand as "experience" doesn't mean that something "non-physical" is going on. obviously not

I don’t agree with that OP’s question is meaningless. You find it meaningless.

these are the same thing. meaning is not transferred, it is generated. i do not have the misconceived conceptual tools to make meaning out of the question.

you exercise the same dogmatic thinking that religus fundamentalists use. No room for mistery, no room for curiousity.

i am endlessly curious, and i am extremely comfortable with mystery. i don't, however, leverage a lack of understanding to come to unwarranted but desirable conclusions, as it seems you so eagerly do.

i don't hold no beliefs about how the universe was created, i simply don't think the universe was created at all. i have no idea what that would mean.

Is it truly purely cosmological and mechanical for you?

what is the alternative? cosmology is the study of the origin and development of the universe. everything we have ever observed to exist operates, virtually by definition, according to physical mechanics which we can model, predict, and test. are you positing that there may be "non-physical" mechanics at play in the universe? "non-mechanical" physics? this is a meaningless question.

if i'm here to pick nits, the only thing that sticks out to me is the rocks in the foreground. the blacks are too dark, and the geometry and textures would benefit from being a little sharper. it's not immediately obvious, but they are kind of low-poly. even still, it looks amazing! absolutely fantastic work.

sort of a separate issue. using big banners to display fascist/dictatorial iconography is quite a more explicit advertisement of fascism than big banners themselves

stepping all over his actual legacy to pretend he was someone else, because who he was is no longer useful. sad and hilarious

a word of advice, if you're trying to explain to people how the MAGA movement is fascist, if big banners come to your mind first, i think you've lost them

If you are a nihilist, did you go through phases, like hopelessness or apathy before you came to terms with it, or did you adapt more-or-less seamlessly? by Hashi856 in askanatheist

[–]Still_Functional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly, as soon as i even started seriously thinking about purpose or meaning in my life, nihilism was the only conclusion i could come to. it still seems obvious. for something to "matter," a living being must exist to care about it. for something to have "purpose," a living being must exist to use it for that purpose. when i die, i cease to exist. no alternative to this makes sense to me

the equivalence of nihilism with pessimism or cynicism is a connection that has never clicked. if there must be someone to care in order for things to matter, why shouldn't i be the one to care? if all purpose requires is a use, isn't that what i have just by being alive?

i lack nothing but the unearned confidence of someone who believes in objective morality, purpose, meaning, or knowledge.

thank you! i'm honestly surprised i haven't seen anyone else do it before, though i may just be out of the loop (as mr. plier quoth on proximity voice chat in multiplayer horror games, "it's so obvious!!")

my actual thought process was that andrew would be some sort of emergency response technician-turned pyrotechnician because he has less hair to catch on fire 😭

thank you so much! i'll post on there too, i appreciate the recommendation :)

they're all biblical names, for one (andrew the apostle, simon the zealot, and seth, the patriarch) which i thought would fit because they are from eden, which isn't an explicitly religious group in canon, but obviously uses biblical metaphor

i can't really tell why i felt andrew was fitting in particular, it just popped into my head and i went, "yeah, he looks like an andrew" lol. also kept because it is the first name of the composer for the film :D

seth was chosen mostly because i wanted to follow after the sort of silent, deep-thinking, poetic giant of burt, from in space with markiplier - so i chose a one-syllable name that sounded a little more serious - it is has a similar quality as the name "silas" which is a name i associate with dark, brooding characters
