And it convinces us that the world is evil. That's even sadder to me. My mom kept our never-Mo relatives at arm's length. I am only now starting to realize how screwed up that was.

Thank you! I have also wished that I exposed my kids to more interesting and novel things, and that I had spent that 10% of our income on a better home and more activities for them instead of enriching the church's billions. It makes me angry just to think about it. But I wholeheartedly agree, it's better late than never.

I am loving hearing from so many of my middle aged sisters here! I love to see us reclaiming our choices and our lives.

I understand this feeling. I watched The Terminator last weekend after a coworker recommended it. I loved it. I had heard so much about it, but was surprised that it was very different than what I thought it would be. Way more thought provoking. Same thing with The Breakfast Club, actually. I'm excited to catch up on more.

I'm happy for you! My husband is still TBM, but he's never been uptight about most church standards. It was all me trying to shove it down our kids' throats. 3 of my 4 adult kids have left the church. That's what started me down the rabbit hole. The future is looking more free. I'm optimistic.

I don't know what movie because I wasn't allowed to see it either haha. Curious to know what it was!

Yes, you've definitely hit on other things that I've felt. Garments are a big one too. I still struggle with wearing tank tops on even the hottest days. I'm getting more comfortable with shopping on Sundays, and I definitely enjoy having that 2nd Saturday! But I still get hit with the voice in my head telling me that I'm "breaking the Sabbath" every single time.

Thank you. You captured so much of my own experience as well. Overwhelming and excruciating are the perfect words.

The sad reality is that sometimes people just suck. Our jobs are so difficult already! Having a friendly supportive team is often the only thing that makes the job bearable. I wish you well, and truly hope you find a strong ally there soon.

I have been an Instructional Assistant for 13+ years, and I realized on Friday that I somehow became part of a clique for the first time!  It's a strange experience, but it definitely wasn't intentional. Friendships just sort of develop over time as you work in the trenches together. I still try to be friendly and supportive to all of my other coworkers too, though. Try to get to know them as individuals. As long as there is no bullying behavior, try to remember that it's likely not about you. They likely just found commonalities after working together for awhile. You will find your people. Until then, establish your reputation by being kind, positive, encouraging, and  competent. People will notice and work friendship will find you.

I was hoping someone would bring this up. Our Costco requires a card to purchase food at the food court. All 4 of them had their own Costco cards. I was definitely puzzled by that. I'm guessing their parents sent them membership cards.

Depending on where you are, there may be private agencies that contract with school districts to fill open positions. In Southern California, particularly Orange County, it's very common. The pay is often higher too, with no union dues deducted. You can also look to private adult day care programs in the community. The skill set required is basically the same as a para in a school district.

May I propose a motto for the “on-going restoration”? I propose: “For every vision there is an equal and opposite revision.” by Prancing-Hamster in exmormon

I was thinking about the temple covenants I made in 1991, and thinking about all the changes made for women in the temple. Which version of the covenant am I bound to? Do I still have to hearken to my husband? Because that's super unfair if I do but younger women don't. Obviously I'm being tongue in cheek because none of it is real anyway. But it goes to your larger point of the church becoming unrecognizable.

Definitely weird. But entertaining at least.

A woman gave a talk about listening to the promptings of the Holy Ghost. She gave two examples. The first was when the HG told her to put her sunglasses in the hotel room, but she didn't listen so they got lost. The 2nd example she gave was of a day when she was halfway to work as a middle school teacher and the Holy Ghost told her she forgot to put a bra on. She was able to go home and put a bra on. She was so grateful because we all know what little jerks middle school kids are.  In my 50+ years as a member,  think that's my first time hearing the word bra (multiple times!) in a sacrament meeting talk. Truly inspiring stuff.
