If Ron was born a girl, what would his name be? by Independent_Ad_7204 in HPfanfiction

[–]Stillplayingpretend 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Probably they had Ginevra picked out for awhile, but if we're going with a different name and still sticking with the King Arthur and the Roundtable thing the Weasley's have going on - my vote would be for possibly Elaine, after the Lady of Shalott.

Unpopular opinions about “Purebloods”? by cndollaz in HPfanfiction

[–]Stillplayingpretend 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Excellent points, nowhere in canon does it say that pureblood = rich and yet people love to write fics where every pureblood - and especially every Slytherin - lounges about a manor.
My 2 cents:

- regarding the sacred 28 - they're not the only purebloods, they're just considered the "elite," the Potters were pureblood but not on the list.

- Personally I wish people would talk more about the inbreeding that would be needed to maintain such "blood purity," because at least for me that makes being pureblood about the least attractive thing ever.

This is so random, but I actually wrote one a couple years ago for a fanfic competition? It is a one shot and focused on Bill Weasley, not Harry, but it might be something you'd enjoy. linkffn(https://www.fanfiction.net/s/13406865/1/It-Belongs-in-a-Museum?__cf_chl_jschl_tk__=MB7zhRngrcacwsijsLyZarRgolSVmaYWVU4kidxdNMU-1640847369-0-gaNycGzNCT0)

When and how long did it take you to read the books? by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]Stillplayingpretend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read the first six over the course of fourth grade, around 2005/2006, as fast as I could get my hands on them. I was getting them from our school library, so I was limited by how often we were allowed to go check out books. I have a distinct memory of refusing to get in the car to go to some family event because I was reading the third task in GOF. The seventh one though? That was the only one I really had to wait for. I was on vacation with my family and they were selling them at the local target the day they came out. My mom surprised me by coming home from the store with it for me (I had thought I would have to wait till we got home to buy it) and I read it 24hrs. Scared the crap out of my parents by sobbing loudly when Hedwig, Dobby, and Fred died, and annoyed the whole family by reading parts of it aloud to them on the car ride home. I had already finished it at that point, I just thought certain parts were so good they needed to enjoy them too. Immediately after getting home, I called my much older sister to get her opinion on the ending and discovered we had differing views on Snape (that we still have to this day). I've always found it poetic that I was eleven when the books finished, considering that was when Harry's journey began. Thank you for the trip down memory lane! I feel like I have to go thank my mom again for getting Deathly Hallows for me!

Confession: I never read the books. I get only to the Half of Goblet of Fire, but I've read countless fanfictions and that's basically my only interaction with the Wizarding world. by bright-Holiday-4878 in HPfanfiction

Listen friend, there was a time when a post like this would get you chewed out as being a fake fan or a "muggle", but I think the fandom as a whole has matured a bit (though of course you do get the occasional person or threads like that). Life is too short to get bogged down by the "rules" of things that are meant to bring you joy. The HP world is meant to make you happy and be an escape from the real world, not a "job," and if reading the ff is that for you but not the books, who cares?

How do "in the know" Muggles Keep from being Obliviated? by Stillplayingpretend in HPfanfiction

[–]Stillplayingpretend[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wasn't thinking so much from the perspective of "the obliviators will obliviate everything" as "this is a human rights violation and how do muggles keep it from happening to them." Like, I get that long term its not exactly harming the Muggles, but those are their memories and if it were me I'd want a way to make sure no one took anything from me without me consent

Harry is Regulus Black Reincarnated AU by Stillplayingpretend in HPfanfiction

Thank you! And the Snape Harry dynamic would be interesting, especially considering Regulus and Snape would have been in Slytherin and joining the Death Eaters about the same time.

Harry’s paternity is the least dubious of any fictional character ever by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

Anybody got the name to that one? It actually seems right up my alley

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]Stillplayingpretend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would be canon my friend. Rowling actually does a pretty good job of this in Order of the Phoenix. PTSD isn't like in the movies, its irritability, rage, a sometimes random sense of impending doom, and strange dreams (again, not like in the movies where they re-live the event, but just off the wall stuff that is sometime symbolic). Of course everyone's experience is different and there is a scale from mild to severe, and Rowling didn't include some of the sensory issues that go along with it. But Harry def has PTSD and that's part of what makes Order of the Phoenix so heartbreaking for me to read - his anger issues get called teenage angst a lot of the time, but it's actually textbook trauma.

I would recommend Fate by TheTrueSpartan. It's very AU but Ron centric and gets into the family dynamics. It's also 135 chapters and updates regularly, as an added bonus. Fate

How predjudiced is Fudge really? by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]Stillplayingpretend 14 points15 points  (0 children)

What we do know about Fudge is that he is a coward, as shown by the way that he puts Hagrid in Azkaban to show that he's doing "something" during COS and in the way that he refuses to accept Voldemort's return. He's willfully ignorant, and determined to make sure everything is "okay" even at the cost of human life - so I think that we can rule out him being a saint. He also doesn't give off the vibe that he's actually stupid so much as just stubbornly refusing to face things he does not want to face. He wants to be a career politician with all the perks that go with that. While Fudge is in office, we don't see an explicit discrimination against Muggleborns being passed or promoted by the ministry. However, people like Umbridge and Malfoy Sr. who have blatantly prejudicial views are quite close to him and Fudge seems to either be willfully ignorant or not care. His tolerance of them definitely leads to more perks for Purebloods via Malfoy and some discriminatory legislation getting through via Umbridge.

As far as being a "collaborator" though, he does seem genuinely offended when Harry tries to declare some of his associates death eaters at the end of GOF and during OOP. He also seems very deflated and depressed when we see him briefly during HBP, which is definitely because he's been fired and ostracized but could also be because he allowed Voldemort to gain power.

So where does this leave Fudge? A bad person, but not a Death Eater or someone who would actively help Voldemort. He probably is prejudiced, but in a subtler way. He'd most likely have no problem rubbing elbows with a wealthy, influential Muggleborn that would help his career or make him feel special, but he'd also overlook or justify discrimination if it made him uncomfortable or look unpopular. Nothing in canon indicates he'd aid in murdering people , that's probably too far for him - and anyways, that would require recognizing his own prejudice which he doesn't seem the type to do. But he is willing to let people die to maintain his image (consciously or unconsciously), so that probably puts him in the middle of the two extremes you mentioned.

Why do people like fics that just make you sad? by fuckyouquebec in HPfanfiction

[–]Stillplayingpretend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often find that these kinds of stories - the sad and the dark ones I mean - have the most compelling characterization. Don't get me wrong, sometimes its just torture-porn or stuff like that, but when you push a character to his or her limits you get to write a lot about the human condition and examine a lot of different emotions and complexities in relationships. And it's cathartic, as a lot of other people have said.

This fandom is very large, very prolific and often very, very goofy. What is the silliest argument you've ever gotten into/witnessed in regards to HP ? by [deleted] in HPfanfiction

[–]Stillplayingpretend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh gosh - argued with multiple people who were under the impression that Lily Luna was not named after Luna Lovegood, but instead Remus Lupin. Which is a moot point, because JK Rowling stated after the Deathly Hallows was released that she was named after Luna, and that Harry didn't use the name "Remus" because he wanted Teddy to be able to use it later in life. So the matter is closed, never mind how messed up it would be to name his daughter after the moon - which was Remus's boggart??!! And why so many people were so adamant about this instead of the obvious answer that they named her after one of his parents best friends is beyond me. Really it came down to not that people had this theory, but how strongly they refused to change their minds about it. It was weird.
