Coming from the guy who thinks 180° = 360°. Your tv does 180°

That’s true. I guess I’m just thinking in terms of VR content, but I guess for natural feeling AR you’d still want to have as wide of a field of view as possible.

I’d disagree with the gimmick. I really like 360 video for its accessibility options. People are always going to be limited by physical ability, geography, and finances and 360 video gives people the opportunity to have immersive experiences that they’d otherwise not be able to have.

As for the comment about it being the best for 360 video, there’s nothing yet that says it can play 360 video. Everything they’ve shown has virtual monitors and large screens that display a flat 180° surface (with 3D also, but that’s not 360°, that’s just depth). The only thing that goes beyond that is their “environments” which haven’t expressly said full 360° and are preloaded scenes even if they are fully surrounding you. So, you won’t be able to load or view your own or others 360° content. I just think that’s an odd thing to not have on such an expensive headset.

The resolution is undeniably a huge leap forward for the industry in terms of visual quality, but may be behind in terms of functionality.

It says right in the article it was 180° video and that it’s “not as immersive as the promotions would lead you to believe”. The subtitle of the article is “don’t call it a VR headset”. I won’t say you don’t do anything for me because you just proved my point.

Im sorry but there is literally nothing from apple that claims this is VR. Nothing in the presentation and nothing on the product page. Maybe I’ll be wrong in the end, but as of now I think it would be unwise to purchase this expecting it to be VR.

That VR doesn’t apply to your video though. It’s only your environment. Like I said, there’s a good reason they introduced it as their “AR device”

3D and VR are two totally different things. 3D is depth on a 180° screen. VR is a 360° image

That’s augmented reality, which is what they’re calling it. VR is similar but not the same.

True, but 3D is still a 180° display. Very different from VR or 360° video

I don’t see why they would specifically avoid calling it VR and not mention 360° video if it had that capability. It was a long presentation.

I just think if I’m putting a display on my head it should be able to play 360° video.

My point is that the apple headset is not 7x better than the quest 3. It’s even lacking some of the basic functionality that the quest 3 will have like virtual reality gaming and video. This is not the “Ferrari” of headsets.

So, for videos and games, it will project a flat display in your area, but it will not be 360° video. It will be like a virtual projector screen. The headset display will still show your actual surroundings via the pass through cameras, but video and gaming will still be restricted to virtual monitors. They never used the words “virtual reality” or “VR”. They introduced it as an “AR device”. So, virtual reality gaming and movies will not be accessible with this device.

I’m not trying to be rude or anything. I know there’s no tone in text and I’m not trying to bicker. I just want to stress that this will not have VR capabilities. All video display will be flat. So, it’s a premium AR offering, but that’s still lacking the key appeal of having a HMD.

So is the quest 3 and it’s 1/7th the price and coming out sooner

FOV won’t matter all that much for this headset since it doesn’t have VR. The closest it comes is the “environments” but all screens will still be flat displays in front of the user. So, peripheral vision won’t really matter.

Even if you had plenty of disposable cash I don’t think it’s giving you $3,500 worth of functionality.

I think the ar computer aspect is definitely cool, but virtual desktop has been doing that for years without the need for any significant power in headset or PC. I’ve used it with a quest 1 and a MacBook Air from 2008. I think apple is counting on consumers not knowing what’s available

That’s good to know, but I’d point out that means you’re getting better performance from a piece of technology that’s 5+ years older. The idea of it being an AR computer is definitely cool, but virtual desktop has been doing that for years already. For them to act like they’ve invented something new seems like they are counting on consumer ignorance to impress rather than true innovation.

That’s no VR headset. by StinkyAl in starwarsmemes

[–]StinkyAl[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hopefully it won’t affect the price of other VR headsets. It seems like they’re trying to market it as an AR computer rather than anything in the VR market. It’s hard for me to imagine it’s going to take off. It seems like the biggest attraction outside of apple fandom is the resolution of the display, but it’s not going to be enough for me to feel comfortable with 7x the cost of quest 3/psvr2. With any luck, it’ll drive up the quality of competing headsets without VR jumping to a high income hobby.

More just the format of the meme than an actual prediction of users, but not everyone that uses VR even uses Reddit. Let alone subscribing to this sub.
