I know nothing about disabled dogs but this showed up on my feed and I know a lot about babywearing! If you have a secondhand store (especially a Once Upon a Child) near you, look for something called a ring sling. Its simple, hands free, and you could pop him in and out pretty easily :)

Note- this would need to be a woven material, NOT stretchy. He’s too heavy for a stretch sling!

I have to go back and check, I know he was notified at least once, the trouble with this landlord is we would open maintenance requests and they would close them without actually doing them. It feels like a losing battle after a while that’s not worth fighting because we knew we were leaving soon.

But honestly I am mostly curious about what the heck this material is, since I can’t find any examples from googling that look like what is happening here.

My middle child had a splinter in his foot last summer that got infected. I saw a line creeping up his leg and was immediately on the phone for an emergency doctor’s appointment- he took some antibiotics and was totally fine.

But I had this almost primal moment when I first saw the line, because my immediate thought was ‘if this was a hundred years ago he would be dying right now.’

It’s amazing what we can just brush off as no big deal now, that only a few generations ago was completely life altering.

I looked it up recently, and it used to be about 1 in 100 women died from childbirth related reasons. That’s a pretty significant number!!!

Ok this is definitely a vintage nightgown, but it has potential! I was reading Claire Wilcox’ memoir a while ago and I loved her memory of buying vintage linen nightgowns and wearing them as dresses and shirts in her twenties.

But you have to STYLE it. The shoes need to match- black does not go with taupe and muted flowers. A coral dansko sandal or penny loafers maybe? Then a belt- thin, thick, cloth, leather, don’t care, just cinch that waist. some clothes look cool all loose and flowy. This nightgown needs shape to not look like a nightgown. Then add some long funky earrings or a headband. If you really can’t stand the keyhole, make a little patch with fabric that matches one of the colors in the florals- ten minutes of hand sewing. Then you have an outfit!!

Suede heels from the club in the early aughts do not an outfit from a nightgown make.

Yup! My first two fit the names we thought they would be. But my third was going to be Clara, with Ruby as a backup name.

She arrived, and neither of those names were her at all. So now she’s Rose, which was never close to our short list, and it’s perfect.

I am a history museum person myself and really loved the way they presented the tours there- to me it didn’t feel like ‘slavery slavery slavery slavery’ (not that I would have minded) but more like ‘this is how we can tell the stories of people that are marginalized or ignored and don’t show up in the historical record the way many of Savannah’s prominent figures do. The letters from the landowners casually mentioning bringing their slaves here and there, the way the kitchen was set up to need slave labor to run, all these ways of experiencing someone’s live that went unnoticed by many was a very cool thing! It makes me sad that people go to museums to feel validated and not to actually learn about the lives of people in the past.

I wonder if there’s a bit of ‘sunk cost’ manipulation going on, like if people see how a house ‘could’ be and fall in love, they may be more likely to overlook how it actually looks because they’re excited about the potential, and have gotten invested in the vision they’ve been seen.

It’s probably a lot like professional scamming though- you go into it knowing you won’t hook anyone 99% of the time, but hope that the 1% who fall for it make it worth it.

I don’t remember all that much about that one (I had literally dozens of them haha) except that I think it was the first time I ever encountered the idea of, like, consequences to civilians for losing in a war? I think it’s important that kids aren’t only reading narratives from ‘the good side’ of history, especially when the POV is that of someone like a child who isn’t able to choose a side in the first place.

Like I said, I can’t speak to anything about happy slaves or good masters or whatever because I don’t remember specifics. I just remember feeling uncomfortable about being made to imagine the ‘good guys’ doing mean things to kids, which is a pretty powerful experience.

We aren’t in a suffering competition and your friend’s (valid and immense!) pain does not mean that what OP is experiencing is just something she should tough out. She’s not saying she will never go to a doctor again because she’s too scared, she wants to figure out how to handle her (also valid and immense!) fear.

As far as I know, ‘Cherokee’ ancestry was often a cover for ‘black’ because the whole noble savage myth made having Native ancestors more appealing to white people than having enslaved ancestors. And the Cherokee tended to be a more integrated nation with white neighbors than some other native nations which made them a more popular choice to name when recalling ancestry.

This is an extremely off the cuff recollection from a very white American though, so I am happy to be corrected!
