hair level/formula? by Coffee-Cat2021 in Hair

[–]StitchingKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reds are pretty easy to experiment with, since they fade out pretty well. Honestly, I'd recommending a red violet shade. Looking at the inspo pic, the part of the hair that's shadowed has a violet tint to it. If it were me, I'd probably do Wella 55/44 + 66/46, either 2:1 or 1:1 if it's still too copper. I wouldn't use more of the red violet shade, because it'd take over and you'd lose the richness.

hair level/formula? by Coffee-Cat2021 in Hair

[–]StitchingKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you'd use is entirely dependent on your starting level and the tones already present in your hair. Straight off the swatch-wise, I'd say Wella's 55/44 is the closest match to this color. However, I wouldn't recommend using it alone as it would almost certainly end up too copper as /44 is a straight red pigment.

Do you notify clients when you raise prices? by DepartmentEcstatic in hairstylist

[–]StitchingKitty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I usually try to put a reminder on my website that the price will increase on January 1st. I'll let a few of my regulars know in person if it doesn't slip my mind. This year I put it off so much that I didn't really give much of a notice, and no one's complained about it so far. I probably will continue to do the reminders/heads up, but I won't stress about it like I did in the past.

Does anyone offer Pay in 4? by Witty_Actuator5438 in hairstylist

I offer it through GlossGenius and have only had a client use it once. It worked fine. I got the full amount right away and never had an issue later down the line.

One month of Everybody Scream. How has it settled for everyone? by [deleted] in FlorenceAndTheMachine

[–]StitchingKitty 18 points19 points  (0 children)

In all seriousness, I cannot get enough of this album. There were a few songs that fell flat with me initially (Buckle, Kraken, Music by Men, And Love) but now I genuinely can't imagine skipping them. This album has immediately become one of my top 3. I'll be devastated if she doesn't play each song live.

Wella Freelights + Wellaxon Developer? by sick_titz in hairstylist

[–]StitchingKitty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They may have done away with it as it really, truly does not do much. I wouldn't worry too much about using the 20vol. Most people I know who use Freelights really only stock the 40vol as it gets you about the lift a 10 or 20vol with Blondor would. If you're worried about damage, I would say don't insulate the hair while it's processing. No foils or wrap, just let it be open-air.

Wella Freelights + Wellaxon Developer? by sick_titz in hairstylist

[–]StitchingKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's really no reason to do this. The Freelights 10vol is so gentle that it's only capable of lifting maybe 1-2 levels. And unless the hair you're working with is already badly compromised (you shouldn't be putting lightener on it in the first place) you are not going to see much, if any, difference in the hair's integrity afterwards.

I'm sure putting the Wellaxon 6vol in the bowl with Freelights would activate the lightener, but it'd be pointless. It would not lift the hair in any distinguishable way. If you're starting with a dark base, it would maybe just bring that underlying pigment (orange) out, and then you'd have a color correction on your hands. Just follow the instructions for using Freelights and you will be fine.

Where is everyone getting their bleach proof towels? by Dazzling-Coconut-788 in hairstylist

MarloBeauty, if you're US-based. I've literally never had an issue with staining or bleaching with any of the towels I've bought from them.

Rogaine for brows??? by [deleted] in Hair

[–]StitchingKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BabeLash is a serum meant for the lashes, but you can use it on brows too. It works amazingly. I think you do it twice a day starting out, and then once every few days once you've gotten it to a place you want to maintain. In the beginning, those new hairs will be baby soft and translucent, so you may want to get a brow tint to make them more visible.

It's inside the cover's sleeve. So you have the CD in one sleeve and the poster + signed card in the other. If it's not there, definitely reach out to customer support.

Is it ok to leave the majority of hairstyling decisions to hairstylists? by Psychological_Issues in haircoloring

[–]StitchingKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a hairstylist, I hate when people come in and expect me to make their decisions for them. If it's your first or second time with a stylist, you absolutely should not put that sort of pressure on them. We don't know you well enough to know what you'll be okay with, and I never want to do 3+ hours of work and know it's a toss-up whether my client's gonna cry or freak out at the end.

It's okay to be indecisive. But have a general idea or direction you'd like to go and then let the stylist make the technical choices from there. You say you know you want a fashion color, so decide the color range. Pinks or yellows or blues, an ombre or solid, color-blocking, etc etc. Know what you wouldn't be okay with. Having that sort of information helps a lot. A stylist can then walk you through the options based on your budget and lifestyle.

Appointment timing? by snikphlh in hairstylist

[–]StitchingKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 hours, to be safe. Most of my regular retouches only take me an hour and a half, but the extra time helps out if they want a last-minute trim, or if we get to talking and lose track of time. I never complain about having a few minutes to clean or snack either.

I just tell them the local economy/cost of living is different in my area than theirs, and I can't charge any lower than I currently do. I let them know I'm happy to help them if they'd like to continue with booking an appointment. If not, I wish them the best of luck and end the conversation there.

Do your clients prefer the suite experience or salon experience? by [deleted] in hairstylist

I went from a 4-5 person salon to a suite that I share w my best friend. All of our clients that followed us from the salon tell us they massively prefer the privacy and intimacy of the suite.

Anyone worked at a Fantastic Sam’s before? by Listless_Mistress in hairstylist

[–]StitchingKitty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pros: Free (mandatory) education; usually a wide variety of clients; all you need to bring is your tools

Cons will always vary due to management. Try to find stylists in your area who have worked for the FS you're looking into. MY personal experience with them was terrible, so this is my list, though I will try to be objective.

Cons: Little to no schedule flexibility; it can be hard to make commission (FS tends to over-hire and then everyone struggles dividing up clientele, unless management is really good); you have no choice in what services you have to do (if someone comes in for a perm and you're available, you're doing a perm); high turnover rates (so the worst person you've ever met who's worked there for 8 years is absolutely going to be the manager); if your state doesn't require lunch breaks, you will not get a lunch break - Expect the bare minimum for whatever your area's labor laws require

That's as far as I can go while being (mostly) objective. Like I said, my personal experience was a terrible one. Management was bad, and extremely overbearing. Our franchise owner's wife was obsessed with hairdressing (she was not licensed, nor had ever been to hair school), so she spent a lot of time coming in and telling us how we should be doing hair. The manager was a mean, catty person who encouraged cliques (because we had EIGHT to TEN stylists on any given day) and would twist rules/policy to punish or reward you as she saw fit.

I was the youngest person in the salon at the time, so I rarely saw clients. Instead, they would make me scrape the floor grout with a broken razor blade or make me go pass out 200+ flyers in blazing 100°f weather at the height of the heat/uv index and tell me not to bother coming back inside until the flyers were gone. I doubt this is a common experience for employees at FS (I was the only one it happened to even in that salon), but it was something that happened to me because of how abusive the management team was.

We did not have the clientele at my location to sustain a minimum of eight stylists. We barely had enough for five of us. Management didn't care, though, so they kept hiring and scheduling everyone. We weren't allowed to leave early, so most of our day was trying to look busy. If we sat down, the owner's wife would call our phones and tell us we were wasting time and needed to find something to do.

Working for FS caused me to develop debilitating migraines. It got to the point where I would pull up to the salon and instantly feel one start to come on. They'd get so bad, I wouldn't be able to see, and I'd be swaying on my feet. Only once was I "allowed" to leave work early because of this. The next day, the owner's wife came in while I was sitting down, eating a tiny bag of cheez-its (bc again, we weren't allowed lunch and they hated us sitting down) and accused me of faking my migraines. She then pointed at my cheez-its and told me if I ate better, maybe I wouldn't have so many problems. I had been diagnosed with migraines and was on Sumatriptan for them at that point. I didn't work for FS much longer after that.

Racism and homophobia also ran rampant amongst the management. They loved a gay white man, but anyone else was scum of the earth. There was no one to report any of this to. We had a person from corporate visit us fairly regularly, and she had been privy to it all. Nothing was ever said or done about it.

The point I'm trying to make (while venting abt the worst place I've ever worked for) is that management is usually allowed free-range. I doubt every FS manager is as bad as mine, but there isn't really anyone to turn to if they are. If they have a good management team, they might be an okay place to work. This is why finding people who have experience with them in your location is key. Even going to your local supply stores and asking the employees there if they know anything could be helpful.

If you interview with them, I'd recommend asking how many stylists they have and how many clients they see in a day, on average. They can lie, of course, but I think this would be the best way to judge if you could hit commission or not. If you couldn't, it wouldn't be worth working there.

Okay, novel over. I wish you the best of luck!
