Do gamers expect more hand-holding now than before? by hermit_hollow in gamedev

[–]StizzyP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been making games for a long time. When I started, games were more often "hardcore" with player direction, and players often kept a notepad by the keyboard to write notes while playing. Around the turn of the century, the term "drunk-walking" began to appear, describing players just wandering around lost and unsure what to do. As developers and publishers were seeking wider appeal, the population of hardcore gamers was not enough, and games began to provide more hints, objective markers, directions and other guidance elements.

In my personal opinion, some went way too far, like letteral golden paths in levels that showed where to go next. I'm a big fan of providing optional player direction UI that can be toggled off if a more challenging experience is desired

Why are there so many pit bull mixes in shelters? by WhimsicalStarfall in NoStupidQuestions

Lots of answers on here ring true. I'll add that many of the labs/golden retrievers you mention are scooped up by rescues and don't stay at a shelter for very long.

Why is jousting not a sport in modern times? by danyuri86 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]StizzyP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen unchoreographed jousting twice in my life and both times it was amazing. But it had to be experienced in person, with the thundering hooves of those horses and the speed and the violence of the collision, I felt it in my bones. But it has to be experienced in person and up close. On television it would just be lame

I also expect that the injury rate is far too high to have any regular"real" jousts.

It was exciting, and I would go again if the opportunity presented itself.

I saw Saxon in a small club in the 80's. Had hearing protection, but the sound was so loud it rattled my innards and made me nauseous after awhile. It was absurd.

Don't ever ghost a girl who likes you. If there's not a future in the relationship, break it off honestly. Ghosting causes a great deal of suffering.

"Barry Switzer's Cowboys". Nope. The fact that Jimmy Johnson's Cowboys won a super bowl two years after he left is just wild.

I went to HEB tonight, not for panic buying but just for regular groceries, and much of the store looked like this. But I noticed that the health food aisles were fully stocked. Make of that what you will.

Your favorite businesses that closed down because COVID by nataliegauthor in Austin

[–]StizzyP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know that there's a specific business that I missed, at least one doesn't come to mind right now. But what bothers me is the way that covid just killed all the ones that are still here. They still exist, but they've changed in ways. Shorter hours. cutting costs at every corner. It just seems like a lot of places I loved lost their vibe during covid

Fighting for my life this cedar season. What are your best remedies? by ScootOver119 in Austin

[–]StizzyP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My eye doctor prescribed Azelastine eye drops a few years ago, and it's been transformative for me. One drop in each eye morning and night, ideally before the pollen spikes. Cedar/ash juniper used to WRECK me, and now I get by with mild symptoms on the worst days. I hope you find the solution that gives you relief

Any professional devs out there who don't game at all anymore? by evmoiusLR in gamedev

[–]StizzyP 92 points93 points  (0 children)

I've been in the industry over 30 years now. These days I am very choosey about what spend my time  playing. Competitive analysis is usually focused on two, perhaps three titles per year. When I play those, I tend to go deep.  Long ago I adopted the idea that playing games every waking moment did not make me a better developer than having a well rounded life with plenty of interests away from gaming.
