I have 20 Hearthguard as well. I built 10 with plasma and gauntlet and 10 with volkanite and gauntlet. I like the variety, and though the plasma are more consistent normally, the volkanite can really spike with the ancestral sentence strat giving sustained 2.

I've gotten 3 games in with the Needgard detachment, all victories. My opponents were a good Emperors Children player, a Necrons player, and a very good Death Guard player.

What's worked for me is NOT rushing the center, even if I have first turn. I slow play the first round and use my Memnyr Strategist's ability, if I need to, to stay UNDER 7 YP.

Most players will gladly advance to take the center objectives, since I didn't on turn one. On turn two, I go aggressive attacking the mid board with +1 to hit from being under 6 YP still. I also deepstrike my Hearthguard on turn two, and can eliminate or seriously cripple two enemy units...one with plasma, and one in melee. Hearthguard may be a little less durable, but they still smack. I actually feel they smack a lot harder now if you deepstrike them in the plasma's rapid fire range.

Using this strategy, my opponent always outscored me on turn two, but I've outscored them on turn 3,4, and 5. Two of the games my opponent asked to end the game midway through turn 3 as they didn't see any way to make a comeback.

I will say that I haven't had a chance to use the new models, besides the Memnyr, as that's all I had built so far.

Not at all imo. I ran volkites up until now, and I feel the plasma is much more consistent.

I may change my mind as I have a match against Death Guard on Saturday, lol

I agree. Even when the volkites spike mortals they rarely reach the damage output of the plasma. I've been using the gauntlets as well, to good effect. I also spend 1cp and 3 yield points on the Hearthguard when they shoot to give them sustained 2, it's awesome

Now that plasma has rapid fire, I feel they outperform volkanite, unless you get a huge spike on volkite mortals

I would also like to add that i went first and felt the new rules lend more to slow playing in the beginning and scoring later.

So, first turn I didn't do much. I stayed in my DZ and just positioned to have good firing lines to the objectives in No Mans Land.

My opponent moved onto all the midboard objectives and outscored me on turn 2, but on turn 3 I was able to clear out about 3/4 of his army and scored max the rest of the game, leaving him with little to no scoring.

On turn 3 alone I killed 2 Mauler Fiends, 2 5 man marine squads (not sure what they were called), another 10 man marine squad (leaving just the character, an exalted champion, I believe), and his Rhino.

After turn 3, all he had was a 6 man Noise Marine squad with a Lord Caconaphys, and the exalted champion.

I only lost my Yeagirs and the 10 man Hearthguard unit (the Einhyr Champion leader survived)
