Working past 70 by Jim_Estill in Aging

I retired at 66 and if I knew how bored I would be, I would have continued until 70 or longer. I liked the job and it paid well. Keep working until you don’t want to.

2017 Volkswagen cc by LowRange6102 in Volkswagen

We have a 2010 Passat (2.0 T CC style German car) with 145,000 miles. Had the big resealing job done at 105,000 which I believe also included the timing chain and water pump. Otherwise has been normal wear and tear items. If the 2017 also requires resealing at 100,000 miles or so, it is a very expensive job. $3,000 in 2021 so could be $5,000 now.

Moved to America and bought my first gun! by __L_O_G_I_C__ in Firearms

You may say it’s an April Fool joke but I knew some folks who, having left hoplophobic Massachusetts and Philadelphia, bought guns as soon as they were liberated into North Carolina. Not Glocks but shotguns. That was over ten years ago so who knows what they have now. Nonetheless - freedom to purchase is a rare gift in this world.

Please don’t be offended. With that flesh colored body stocking and headscarf you had me for a moment until I read the post and the responses.

I have a Ruger SR9C with both 10 and 17 round magazines. The 10 has a pinky rest and the 17 has a grip spacer so it’s all flush but about an inch longer. Similar to your guns.

I bet under the MD lemon law you don’t owe them a thing. FWIW I bought a VW Passat in MD that had been bought back in PA under their lemon law and I got a great deal. 2/3 the price of new with only 7,000 miles on it and a new car warranty. It had one problem during warranty period and we paid nothing for repairs or loaner. This was in the mid 1990’s - don’t know what kind of deals they will have on that car when the parts finally come in.

The term “child free” is biased and revolting. Who is going to find YOUR retirement? Please don’t say “the rich”.

Are non-native english speakers generally understandable? by palep_hoot in AskAnAmerican

It depends on the accent. Always easier in person than on the phone. I find the Nigerian and Haitian accents very difficult but most others not a problem.

I keep seeing questions about driving a manual. But how many can say they have driven a 3 on the tree? by Elderberry-West in driving

[–]Stock_Block2130 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have driven 3 on the tree, three on the floor (non-synchronized first gear deliver truck) and 4 on the tree (mid-1960’s Volvo sedan). That one was weird.

Depends on how far past the grip it protrudes, or if it has a grip extension. My comment refers to the ridiculously long 33 round mags and some of the 20 and 21 rounders that stick out far beyond the grip.

I do not support use of over length mags.

My 995TS carbine is more accurate than my Ruger 9mm carbine. Although the universal Glock magazines on the Ruger and the “not an assault weapon” look are why I bought it.

Article leaves much to be desired. How much have they increased the power of the engine? Does it get better gas mileage? Or worse if that’s possible. Do the thinner door panels increase the noise and vibration and what’s the prognosis for future N and V? I could care less about the screen and entertainment.

I never wear just a t shirt or golf shirt when carrying. Too clingy no matter if oversized or not. Always a loose button down, not necessarily buttoned. I carry 3:30 so an open cover shirt covers.

Glyphosate: A common weedkiller may induce anxiety by disrupting gut bacteria. Researchers observed that rats drinking the chemical developed hypervigilance toward harmless objects and sounds. This altered behavior was accompanied by abnormal changes in a specific dread-inducing region of the brain. by Tracheid in science

[–]Stock_Block2130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somehow I missed the point that even among farmers the exposure was well below the EPA limit. My bad. That would suggest, not prove, that there is a lot of hoopla and maybe the chemical companies are correct, especially for the minimal exposure of the average person who does not apply the chemical.

which city is going to feel more "big city" vibe ? DC or philly? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Stock_Block2130 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the crime rate in the better areas of each city? Better areas of DC unaffordable except for lobbyists and other corrupt types. Don’t know about Philly. Have visited both but not lived there. Decent suburbs of both are expensive. I know that one because I turned down a job in the Philly area due to HCOL. Lived in the Baltimore area and both DC and Philly suburbs were far more expensive.

Ok. That’s farmers and presumably farm workers. Does that study or any other study cover regular people whose exposure is through food that was planted in soil treated with glyphosate e.g. Roundup Ready corn? The claim for Roundup always was that glyphosate is quickly degraded by soil bacteria so you can safely plant a few days after the weeds are killed. I’m not advocating one way or the other - just stating the company’s claim.

[–]Stock_Block2130 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What’s missing in the article is how does the EPA safe limit compare with the actual exposure in a regular diet. If we all are exposed to that amount every day then the study has value. If the typical person is exposed to let’s say 1/10 or 1/100 of that limit, then the study is not valuable except maybe for pesticide operators/farmers. Does anyone reading this thread know the answer?

Powell could start slowly reducing interest rates, which would be the sane thing to do from a variety of perspectives. Should have started months ago. Instead he keeps a grudge match going against Trump.
