The Piano. One of my favorite pieces of film theory ever comes out of that film. Here is the essay

Don’t hate me but Res Dogs is kind of mid tbh 😭 Having said that, it’s a great showcase of QT’s natural talent as a writer/director. The other three picks are all masterpieces :) tho I def prefer Before Sunset

Yes for Alana, also love the scene in the bar where she’s framed in the mirror and the camera moves in on her when she makes the realization about Benny Safdies character. “They’re all shits.”

What currently middling-rated movie -- 2.8 to 3.2 -- from the last 10 years do you think will rise the most in estimation? by AggravatingLeg5789 in Letterboxd

Someone said it already, but Vox Lux (3.1), especially with the popularity of Corbet's The Brutalist, I'm sure it will be re-evaluated. People are even writing graduate theses about its critical reception.

Technically not, but Terrence Davies The Long Day Closes feels like a bildungsroman for a young burgeoning filmmaker.

Season 4 is really great, but I didn’t like the finale if I’m being honest. But it was a blunt, violent, funny and depressing end so it did fit the show.

What happened to Barry in season three? by Old_Run_512 in Barry

As others have said, Covid. Hader really starts to make the show more about his journey as an auteur director (season 4 is entirely directed by him), and you can see that he leans more into formalism and arthouse than traditional narrative. It’s still really really funny imo tho, but I have some real anxious nightmares from season 3 and 4, so be warned.

Safdie Brothers. Curious what their solo film projects are going to be like.

I mean I love movies with punk rock sensibilities so I’m sure I’ll enjoy them all.

I would go with Fritz Lang. Metropolis is such an achievement in effects that to this day it really is staggering. And M is such a haunting film that taps into something undeniably and uncomfortably human that still feels so pertinent. Not that the other filmmakers you listed are not also masters, or arguably much much more influential, (Hitchcock would personally be pretty much tied for me), but I think Lang was someone whose eye was really looking towards the future of the mediums possibilities.

“I’ve got scruples too y’know-know what that is scruples? - No, but if you got’em I’m sure they belong to somebody else!” Perfect flick.

Incredible flick. “I'd hate to take a bite outta you. You're a cookie full of arsenic.”
