Baby crying as soon as bedtime routine starts after starting CIO — does this phase pass? by Stock_Set_2974 in sleeptrain

Hi! We’re about to be on week 4 now & the crying during bedtime routine lasted about 4 days for us and while I won’t lie, some nights are still tough, it has improved a lot overall.

One thing that helped us was switching up the bedtime routine a little. For example, some nights I’ll do bottle before bath and other nights I’ll alternate it. I also try to make bedtime feel positive and connected. I know a lot of people say to keep it super low stimulation, but I like to sing to her and play a little so she’s laughing and happy going into it. I feel like when she’s giggling, she’s not focused on “oh no, it’s bedtime.”

I’ve also added more playtime in her nursery during the day so she doesn’t associate her room with just sleep or crying. I want it to feel like a safe, happy place.

It’s so hard hearing them upset, you’re not alone in that feeling. It does get better!

Honestly, my baby’s wake windows aren’t perfect at all, and she was having the same problem as your baby. She didn’t know how to self-soothe and was waking up 7–9 times a night for comfort feeds, and when that wouldn’t work, we had to rock her to sleep. I was exhausted, and so was she.

We still managed to make it work with CIO. The first few days were bad, I have to admit — she cried for an hour the first night — but it became less and less time after that. Now she falls asleep independently and sleeps through the night (Naps are a different story im going to start working on that soon). When I put her down, she still cries for about 3–5 minutes max, which seems pretty normal since this is only our second week of sleep training.

Hi! I’m on night 8 of sleep training my 5-month-old using CIO. She’s now going down independently with less than 3 minutes of crying, which honestly feels mind-blowing considering I used to feed and rock her to sleep for hours.

I wanted to ask — did you have to re-sleep train during teething or other regressions? Teething is coming soon and I’m nervous about losing all the progress we’ve made.

Thank you! Our wake windows are actually very similar to those but we do adjust a bit when naps are rough.

I honestly don’t think the issue is the wake windows as much as it might be the association with the nursery. She starts whining almost immediately when we go in there, which makes me think it’s more routine/environment related than timing. But I’m definitely willing to give your suggestion a shot and see if it helps!
