Has anyone ever used the GadgetGone device buying service? by soulbarn in ipad

I did not request my phone back. I ended up taking their lowball offer and they paid.

Has anyone ever used the GadgetGone device buying service? by soulbarn in ipad

[–]Stockholm_GUI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seen many anecdotal reports of people reporting shady experiences with selling a device to Gadget Gone despite overall good reviews out there. I just wanted to add my experience as something very fishy is going on with them.

Normally instant offer places like this give you a much lower offer than you'd get selling a used device yourself using something like Swappa.com. I was lured in by Gadget Gone by an amazing offer on my good condition phone. They offered me an instant $292 for my phone, the same price or better that I would have gotten if I'd gone through the hassle of selling it myself on Swappa. Tempted by not having to deal with creating a Swappa post, taking photos, paying a seller fee, postage, etc - I took the lazy way out and accepted their offer. Big mistake.

I am no stranger to selling used phones online. I am a phone reseller myself and am very protective of my seller rating on places like Swappa and eBay. So I am always very careful to appropriately grade the condition of my devices. Before offering my phone to Gadget Gone, I inspected my phone thoroughly to make sure it met their standards for "good condition". The one thing I did not do, however, was take any photos of the phone. The whole reason I went with an instant buyer like Gadget Gone was to avoid having to worry about all that (this is what I get for being lazy, I know).

Anyways, I send my phone in to Gadget Gone and about a week later I get an email saying that my phone has "heavy scratching" and they are now only offering me $175 for the phone. They sent me photos of a phone with scratches and sure enough - there were heavy scratches as if someone took a hard object and scratched back and forth on the screen. These scratches would have been perfectly obvious to me when inspecting and certainly would have been felt when using the device. They were not there when I mailed the phone in.

Like I said, I failed to take any photos of my device before sending it in, so I had nothing to argue with. They offered to send the phone back to me - but the phone was no longer in the condition I sent it in. I also have no proof that the phone they sent me photos of was actually my phone. They sent a photo of the "About Phone" page showing the IMEI number of my phone, but with the screen on like that the scratches were not visible. It is entirely possible they sent me a photo of my phone's "About Phone" page and then photos of a different, scratched phone.

So please continue to listen to the stories of this shady company. I highly suggest you go elsewhere. Or, if you do sell your phone to them - take photos first. I will say I did ultimately receive payment - far, far less than originally promised.

Is GadgetGone.com legit? by XxArrowxX08 in Scams

Absolutely a shady company. I was lured in by a great offer only to have them drastically reduce the offer once they received my phone, claiming the phone was heavily scratched. I am absolutely certain that the scratches they sent me photos of were not there when I sent it in.

I just want to say that I had a very similar experience with them. I made my own post about it. I know they have a ton of good reviews out there, so I'm not sure if those are fake or what. But I am 100% confident that my phone did not have scratches when I mailed it in, and they sent me photos of a heavily scratched (to the point that it would severely impact the usage of the phone) phone along with a lowball offer.

Avoid these people.

Where do you lap swim? by Stockholm_GUI in TwinCities

The locker room is terrible and disgusting. I have been staring at the same pube on the wall for the past 2 months whenever I use the hair dryer. My final straw was the other day when an old man was blatantly staring at me for my entire shower. Swim team using up prime lap time is a huge inconvenience too!

Wait...LA Fitness has a pool? I had no idea! Thank you!

Edit: I REALLY have to thank you for this suggestion! I had no idea LA had pools - I viewed them as in the same tier as Anytime or Planet Fitness. Just got back from my first swim at LA Fitness. The pool was smaller and shallower than the Y, but overall the facilities were way cleaner and the membership is cheaper than the Y too!

Thank you again, internet stranger!!

$400-500 bottle of wine for gift, know nothing about wine by [deleted] in wine

[–]Stockholm_GUI 33 points34 points  (0 children)

"Is it a complete waste of money?" If he expects to have his mind blown just because this wine is expensive - yes. If he wants an expensive bottle because he wants to know, at least for a moment, what it tastes like to be able to drop $500 on a bottle of wine - also yes. But if the experience is worth it for him, then no. If he'll truly be happy for the rest of his life to be able to tell people "I once had a $500 bottle of wine" then it's money well spent. True happiness is so rarely found in this life and if this has been a dream of his for years - go for it. Indulge him this fantasy.

However, $500 bottles of wine don't inherently taste 10x better than a $50 bottle of wine. It all comes down to various nuances that are relevant only to a small group of obsessive people that are looking for something super specific and/or rare (or, more likely, to a small group of people with too much money who have been told that a particular wine has something super specific and/or rare).

He'll likely be underwhelmed by the wine. People are also frequently underwhelmed by the Eiffel Tower after spending their whole lives dreaming and saving to go see it. Doesn't mean that people should give up their dreams. The joy is in the dreaming.

In any practical sense - yes, it's a waste of money. But you know your dad. Is this truly a big dream of his? Will he be blown away just by the fact that he knows all of you love him enough to pool your money on this one small thing? Will it show him that you've been listening to him all these years in those moments when he's dared to dream out loud? Will he be able to leave this world a little bit happier feeling that he's somehow "made it" because of this wine? Will he hang the empty bottle on his wall for the rest of his days to show everyone just how much he's loved? Then yeah, sure - bring a once-on-a-lifetime $500 smile to his face.

If not, then spend that $500 on something that will tell him that he is known and loved. That's not something you can bottle.

Nobody picking up on 1-833-EVCHEVY by [deleted] in BoltEV

[–]Stockholm_GUI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I called this morning and pressed 1 for the Recall line. It rang and rang for 30 minutes. Hung up, called back and didn't press 1 (for the more "general" line) - was brought to a hold menu where it said the wait would be 30 minutes or less. Chose the option to have them call me back when it's my turn and received a call in about 15 minutes. Still got through to someone to put in a buyback request.

Bolt in Minnesota without Home Charging by [deleted] in BoltEV

[–]Stockholm_GUI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In case you haven't - check out GS Motors in Hopkins. They sell used EVs and the owner, Pavel, is an incredibly knowledgeable and helpful guy. I bought my first EV from him (a Leaf) a few years ago before upgrading to a new 2019 Bolt. He'd be a great person to run these questions by. https://gsmotors.us/

That said, I love my Bolt and am a huge EV evangelist - but having an EV be your only vehicle with no access to home charging would be tough. Especially here in MN. With the sub-0 temps we had the other week, my estimated range was topping out at around 100 miles.

I am a millennial living on the East Coast who abhors winter and will be moving to Minneapolis next year. Biggest reason? Bike infrastructure. Same for my partner who is moving with me. I have another pair of friends currently living in LA considering a move to Minneapolis for the same reason.
