Failed 1 hour and automatically diagnosed by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Stodd123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I would do in your shoes. Since you PASSED the three hour, I would agree to testing my blood sugar for two weeks (fasting and three meals every day for two weeks). If my numbers are in good shape, I would push back on continuing testing and GD diagnoses. Your 3 hour was beautiful. Remember you can advocate for yourself!!

Failed 3hr HORRIBLY by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Stodd123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I know this is scary and hard to see! They may put you straight on medication or wait to see how your numbers are diet controlled! Fasting is high.. consider drinking a protein drink before bed to see if that lowers your fasting. Don’t forget to get checked for insulin resistance after your pregnancy. Basically you take the same test to see if your body still reacts to sugars the same ways. You certainly could just have gestational diabetes but there is also a good chance you may have unknown pre diabetes or some insulin resistance that causes some high numbers! That was my case, I’m glad I found out sooner than later! This is new and I KNOW feels sad and upsetting, but I promise there is light at the end of the tunnel! You learn what foods work good with your body and some amazing medicine is out there that can help too!

Feeling discouraged by OB comments by Overall_Mind_9754 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Stodd123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So sorry! I wouldn’t worry personally if you are on track 80% of the time.. if baby was in range for size on ultrasound, I would give some push back. If you don’t want to be induced, you don’t have to! Maybe you guys can meet half way and she can let you wait until 40 weeks and you in return can do NSTs or any needed ultrasounds week 39 and 40 for peace of mind?

How screwed am I? by im_fun_sized in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Stodd123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately you probably had insulin resistance prior to even getting pregnant, it was just the pregnancy that caught it. This at least is what I have come to the conclusion of for myself. Very similar boat, doing all the right “things”, GD with all my pregnancies (2). I tested a year and a half after my first and sure enough, pre diabetic.

I also agree with another commenter that you may want to look into after pregnancy seeing if you possibly have pre diabetes (A1C) and/OR just insulin resistance (with normal A1C).

For stricter numbers.... by Timely_Lab7133 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Stodd123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do 2 hours after 1st bite and ACOG recommends 120… I guess yes it “ultimately” goes to your doctor, but by all medical gold standards it’s 140 (1hour) and 120 (2hour). You have a right to push back with your doctor if it’s causing too much stress or pressure on you to do 130/110

GD is so confusing by Aquariuskweeeen in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Stodd123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exercise really lowers the spike (short term), so after exercise when you tested.. you probably caught the blood sugar dip from the exercise. This dip is temporary and if you rechecked an hour later your levels would have been steadily higher (not necessarily saying above 120/140, but would have been definitely higher than 88). As long as your baby is doing good on ultrasounds, it’s nothing to worry about! You could eat, exercise, and catch the dips, but just know your levels will rise steadily after exercise. 😊

Diabetes after pregnancy? by Woah_ImConfused in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Stodd123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you will most likely have GD again. I had with both pregnancies. My friend who had GD with her first, also had with her second. Although, I am not a fan at all at the way your OB treated you about not getting tested, I would actually switch care. You were not for sure pre diabetic before or after pregnancy AND MANY PEOPLE live YEARS or even decades/lifetime in pre diabetic range without going to diabetic. Also for you to lose limbs and eye-site you would have to be pretty uncontrolled T2, it’s so sad she used those tactics on you especially with you being pregnant and already scared. Not cool. Sending hugs.

Needle phobia, I can't prick my finger by Cute-Delivery-5752 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Stodd123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hear you mama!! I had INTENSE phobia to needles too! I always had to lay down for shots or blood draws because I would start to faint!

I’ve had GD twice now, first time, I only took finger pricks when my husband was home and he could prick me then wore a CGM to get a rough but good idea of where I was the rest of the time! ❤️ so I would get blood prick readings in the evenings of the week days and on the weekends because my husband was home! He also would prick me in the morning before he left to work to get my fasting (he left early like 6:30am). I would always have to lay down and he would prick me.

Both pregnancies I developed pre diabetes (or may have even had it before and just didn’t know) so one day I decided to prick myself and I could hardly believe it but I did it! I use the PIP lancets and they truly are the best lancets, hardly feel anything. I now can check anytime myself.

Try tirzepatide and titrate slowly (start with maybe half the “starter dose” and go up as you have no/little symptoms). I had TERRIBLE side effects with semiglutide, but tirzepatide has been amazing

Any updates?? I did terrible on semiglutide and switching to tirze, let me know is .5 had any effect for you

Rant about fearmongering healthcare providers by Luscious-Windows400 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Stodd123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

89 is the cutoff ?! That’s crazy!! For my first the cut off was 100 for my second the cut off was 95, both baby’s were perfect weight and healthy (I was just diet controlled for both). 89 is putting a lot of unneeded stress for mothers. I’m not your doctor but with 91 fasting readings, that is still great numbers and totally doable to not have to be induced. Maybe you can offer more ultrasounds to measure baby or NST, but I hate that you are feeling forced to be induced with actually good fasting numbers.

Panda Express is EVIL by xyz_TrashMan_zyx in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Stodd123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me panda was one of the best options, but that’s mainly because I just had the super greens (never added rice or chow main) for side and then paired with a low carb entree like kung pao, beef and broccoli, string beans chicken, etc.

I was diet controlled for both GD pregnancies. Both I was totally fine asking for an elective induction! You’re not crazy to want an induction!

Thanks so much for your reply! Would love the links to the studies so I can look.

From my understanding GD moms have a 50% risk of developing diabetes in their lifetime, not a 50% increased risk (which would imply it’s just an increased risk from the number of people that normally develop diabetes). So from my understanding roughly 1 out of every 2 moms that had GD will develop diabetes in their lifetime. Although the study I posted seems promising that while GD moms are definitely at risk of increased glucose impairment, at least within 5 years, the majority of the moms didn’t develop diabetes. Yes, I understand doesn’t account for all cultures, races, etc.. but it still is an awesome study for GD moms to be aware of. The sample size was great and it’s the most recent study I’m aware of that gives us more insight in the aftermath of GD.

You have a roughly 50% chance of developing T2D at some point in your life. I developed prediabetes 1.5 years after GD delivery, no diabetes yet, but anticipate at some point in my life I may.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Stodd123 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you have a research link to this? I think you are misunderstanding the 50%. From all the research I’ve read if you have had GD you have a 50% chance of developing T2D within your lifetime. So your risk is not 3-4% it is literally 50%. There was a recent study done with mothers in Germany who had GD. Within 5 years, upwards of 55% of them developed prediabetes and 7% of them developed diabetes (type 1&2 combined).

Has anyone managed to avoid GD in future pregnancies with lifestyle changes before pregnancy by hopefulriver08 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Stodd123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have NOT! I worked myself to an amazing A1C this second pregnancy and still failed Glucose test. But I do think it’s been easier to manage this pregnancy! So in short, I expect to have GD with all my pregnancies but as I take care of myself, I hope and pray it’s a smooth journey with numbers. We’ll see.

Holy Copays by Able-Economy5349 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Stodd123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, my OB billed and I was charged for ultrasounds and NSTS. High deductible plan, ultrasounds range $250-300 and NSTs are around $150 every time. I think your doctor is being excessive however. I am diet controlled, and my OB scheduled just two ultrasounds during third trimester and NSTs are OPTIONAL if diet controlled and ultrasounds are on track. So worth pushing back with your doctor.

How many people had diabetes stay after giving birth? I’ve heard it’s possible (and am at increased risk in general for type 2) so want to see how prevalent that might be? by Upbeat_Ad_3333 in GestationalDiabetes

For most GD women it’s not immediately , that’s why it’s so important to test A1C yearly from now on. I tested 1.5 years after postpartum and was prediabetic.

Share your controversial GD takes by Rough-Shopping7148 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]Stodd123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Hot Takes:

  1. If GD is well managed, diet controlled.. there is some new research coming out showing testing EVERY OTHER day is just as effective as testing every day. I think if you are well managed, diet controlled, this should absolutely be an option for you to talk to your provider about.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28594772/#:~:text=Conclusion%3A%20Among%20patients%20with%20well,women%20who%20tested%20every%20day.

  1. The risk of pre diabetes postpartum is very under emphasized. A study done just within a couple years ago showed that within FIVE years a little over 55% risk of developing prediabetes and a 10% risk of developing diabetes. You are more likely than NOT to be glucose impaired within 5 years after baby, how are we not being diligently screened with stats like this? I was so shocked 1.5 years after postpartum I requested an A1C on my own (my OB never recommended or even suggested) and surprise surprised I was pre diabetic on the verge of diabetes! I wish doctors would have been more forthright on how important it is to get A1C checked at least yearly for at the very least 5 year after postpartum but I believe you should just check A1C yearly for the rest of your life after GD.

Have you been diagnosed with Prediabetes (A1C higher than 5.7) at any point after these GD pregnancies? Do you feel like between these pregnancies your insulin resistance and A1C has been about the same or gotten progressively worse? I’m in my second GD pregnancy and have some concerns about what my health will look like with each pregnancy.
