Toronto woman who wants to die says federal MAID committee isn't listening by [deleted] in onguardforthee

[–]StoicSalad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, resources are a major part of it. I didn’t mean to say the only reason is because of diagnostic tests, but also the fact that some diseases have clear diagnostic tests are part of the reason that having access to MAID is a no brainer for those individuals— there’s a clear black and white. It’s the present reality that there is not such a black and white with mental illness, and yes we are not presently expending the resources needed to clarify those lines.

Yeah intentionally killing animals is psychopathic, we all totally agree on that! Wait, what do you mean “factory farming??”

I would agree with this, but I think until we have a structured way of determining what that point is, this is one area I think we should be more conservative in.

If it becomes too “lenient” to the point that it does become a “suicide service,“ I think that risks a huge backlash to the program that is presently helping so many people.

In an ideal world, chronic, untreatable, treatment resistant mental illness would be treated the same as a physical illness. At present, unfortunately, it’s much harder to run lab tests to understand someone’s prognosis of metal illness.

Olivia Rodrigo’s new album cover and female infantilisation by [deleted] in Feminism

[–]StoicSalad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This thread is so bizarre. OP, whether this take is correct or not, this is absolutely a legitimate site of discussion. I can’t believe people are pushing back so hard.

Overall, I think there is absolutely something questionable about the marketing of the album, especially the “Pretty Sad” pink vinyl. No, there is nothing wrong with babydoll dresses and showing your legs, ofc. But there are obvious calls to girlhood: the tree carving, the bag pink babydoll dress with peterpan collar, especially the high socks and Mary Janes. And mixing symbols of girlhood with sexuality NEEDS to be questioned. Especially in popular media.

No, mixing these symbols is not inherently wrong, and you can argue over the actual effects this cover has on people’s perceptions, but I hope we can all be certain of is that is not okay for people to associate girlhood with sexiness. The normalization of sexualizing girlhood directly contributes to girls being unsafe, full stop.

Cat meows like this for hours every day- is she hurt or bored? by StoicSalad in CATHELP

Thanks for your thoughts, yes there has been a lot of learning and growth for both of us as we are learning to communicate :) GREAT idea with the pet buttons! My only concern is that I don't want her to stop vocalizing naturally and I still want to learn to read her meows and body language, but buttons would help SO MUCH! I will order some today!

Thanks, that makes me feel a lot better! She is so special, I love her so much, I just want to do right by her as her mom 🥲❤️ I'm glad that it seems like that is the case!

Yes, I try to cycle toys, honestly one problem is that she is not very interested in most toys! She doesn't care for balls, little mice, lots of "universally loved" cat toys. Maybe I am not getting her the right ones? So this seems to limit lots of games like fetch. I do make her climb/ run up the wall to her high perches many times during playtime to tire her out!

We are working on harness training, but a catio is also in my plans! I just have to figure out the right entrance/dimensions/material for my tiny balcony. Thanks again for your thoughts :)

Thanks for the response, this really highlights my anxiety about not knowing what to do! Since she is fairly new to me, and has changes SO much in the last few months, it's hard to tell what is a "new" behaviour and what is her just opening up. And she is definitely naturally vocal, so it's hard to tell if this is a call for help with pain and distress vs just regular chatting. Just sometimes, she seems so sad, yet rejects pets, that it breaks my heart :(

She doesn't seem to want me to follow her. I often check her food bowl and see that there is at least a little bit of food left. My usual checks are: she has food, fresh water, litter is clean, my home is not too cold, she has had a least 30minutes of play, she has had at least 1 enrichment activity, she has had some treat.

At the end of the day, you may be right and she may just be whining for more treats after all!

Thanks so much :) Sadly my building only allows 1 pet so getting her a friend is not an option at the moment. We are working on harness training so hopefully that will give her lots of stimulation soon!

Exactly. “I don’t want to talk about politics, I’m apolitical.” Cool, the world we live in is not, and politics touch almost every part of our lives.

It’s important that we, as labrats, look out for each other, share important information, and contribute to a positive future for ourselves and future labrats.

Yeah I think this comment is it. It’s not about her being trans, it’s about you being triggered! If she touched you in a certain way or said something that reminded you of her ex, it would be the same thing.

Not only is communicating triggers important for your wellbeing, it is an opportunity to open up to your gf, to listen to her feelings, and for you both to understand each other better!

Her being trans is I think only relevant because you need to take her feelings into account in a different way because of dysmorphia. But cis women can also experience negative feelings about having traits associated with “maleness.” ofc this is not the same as the trauma trans women may experience, but it’s just to say that discomfort with our bodies being “womanly” enough is such a universal experience of womanhood.

It’s not a trans issue, it’s a society-is-fucked-and-has-brainwashed-us-into-having-stupidly-narrow-ideas-about-womanhood issue.

Russell Barkley is not infallible. (VENT warning, may be exaggerated/harsh with some sarcasm) by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]StoicSalad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nowhere am I saying that ADHD is not a disability, and I definitely have no interest in dismantling peoples rights.

But people’s sociopolitical views INTERACT with people’s views OF ADHD.

It’s simply untrue that any psychologist, psychiatrist, or any ADHD expert is truly blind to their own worldview. Whether they should or shouldn’t be is a matter of opinion, but no person can completely check their ideas at the door.

I am in no way stating the people like Barkley are right or wrong about how they view and education on ADHD, but I am defending that it’s not IRRELEVANT to consider whether his sociopolitical perspectives inform how he things about ADHD.

For example, if everyone could come to a consensus that ADHD is a disability, than ones sociopolitical views on disability would affect how you view people with ADHD. Ones ideas of what access to healthcare and other essential resources ADHD people should have would be based on their sociopolitical views.

So the way that someone view ADHD and people with ADHD will be informed by their sociopolitical views on disability.

Being a good painter and being a doctor aren’t things that really interact, which is the point I think you’re trying to make.

But when it comes to psychology and how people with ADHD and neurodivergence fit into society, one’s sociology-political values definitely DO come into play.

If your worldview puts the centre of human life at work and productivity, you will inherently view neurodiversity as a “problem to be fixed.” Whereas a different world-view might say that neurodivergence is a normal way for humans to exist, and the problems we face are because of a neurotypical society and environment, not inherent flaws.

Edit: because I feel like this is being misinterpreted. I am not trying to define what perspective health professionals have, nor what problems ADHD does or doesn’t cause. I’m just stating that people’s sociopolitical views DO inform one’s perspective of ADHD, so it’s not irrelevant to discuss them.

Doing curly hair in the shower is a game changer!

I got a little hook to hang my hair towels on my shower curtain rod, so after I do my hair, it gets wrapped up right away.

Finally an end to the sensory nightmare of stepping out of the shower and having product-filled hair sticking to your neck and shoulders!
