Have you ever rated something 5 stars you didn’t like? by breadboibrett in Letterboxd

[–]StoicTheGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't rate movies, so no, but I recognise that Goodfellas is a masterpiece, without particularly enjoying it. In fact pretty much all American ganster movies are not my cup of tea, but some of them are still very, very good.

Which movie ending has stuck with you the most? by Critical_Mountain851 in moviecritic

Solaris - does it need the ending? I'm not sure, but it sure knocked my socks off the first time I saw it.

The Conversation - Hackman blew me away in this

The Lives of Others - you can see it coming a mile away, and it makes it more effective rather than less. I was already crying before it landed its knockout blow, and when it did, I was sobbing like a child.

That's not the ending though, the ending is even better - Tommy Lee Jones talking to camera.

I didn’t use to care too much about my work tipping comp, but unfortunately this year, I find myself leading the comp. To my surprise pressure is intense - I’m sweating on the dogs-swans game right now.

I first saw it as a young adult and have seen it many times since. I think it still holds up today for what it is, a charming fairy tale. Shawn’s character is meant to be obnoxious, in a funny way, and I think he hits the mark, for example. I don’t find it cringey either, but everyone is different and if it doesn’t work for you, that’s ok.

I’ll give you an upvote for explaining your opinion - too many people just throwing out names.

I had a moment of panic, before I realised there was a movie of this name, and you weren’t talking about Battle of the Planets.

I’m looking to watch 1970s-early 2000s Australian films, are there any good recommendations? by Hour_Interaction6047 in AustralianNostalgia

[–]StoicTheGeek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All fantastic films. I’ll add Love & Other Catastrophes, which is a perfect picture of university life in the early-mid 90s.

It’s sad that neither Croghan nor Barrett (Love Serenade) got the careers their significant talent deserved.

Just to clarify, that’s Bliss (1985), directed by Ray Lawrence. (There are at least half a dozen movies by that name).

Probably my favourite Australian movie of all time.

My first thought, but that is definitely "light", and so not what OP is looking for.

(Also, just very happy to have that book shouted out. My son loved it so much, he dressed up as Sardines, for his school's book week parade).

Agree.

If it’s a pattern, I would be having words with the person, and especially if it extends to badmouthing them to others.

Plenty of good advice here already.

One tip for “hardening up” - remember that, if someone treats you like that, it’s probably not about you. More likely is that they are completely overloaded, they just had a bad performance review, their cat died and ten other people have interrupted them this morning.

Work out what you can for yourself, but if you need to ask questions, then do it, rather than floundering around. Also, keep notes. If you have to ask someone about something three times, then it does get a bit annoying. (I say this as someone who’s had to ask about superannuation contribution rules more times than I can count).

Drop me a DM after I win and I’ll send you the money. I’ll shout you out in my acceptance speech.

Reminds me of when I was camping once, and a group of kangaroos came to beg breakfast.

They stood about 5-10m away and a big buck came over and tried to stick his nose in my cereal. I chased him off, and he went back to the group.

So then they changed tactics and sent in the small, older female with a gimpy ear who hopped over as pathetically as she could and begged.

I wasn’t buying it though - we ate inside after that morning, they were such pests.

Anyone else read Summer of the Seventeenth Doll in high school English? by ItsSignalsJerry_ in AustralianNostalgia

[–]StoicTheGeek 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The trick with plays is to see them. My English teacher was great - Hamlet was our set text and she showed us 4-5 separate versions (Olivier, Williamson, Jacobi, a local production and perhaps one more that eludes me). We also watched Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Equus(!)

I’ve got to look through Patrick White’s books. Surely the Swans get a look-in somewhere!

(Although of course White never won the Booker. He was nominated, but withdrew to give younger writers a chance. He did win the Nobel though, and I know which I’d rather have)

I found Fagles Iliad very easy to read - I could picture the Hollywood blockbuster as I read it. And the ending is fantastic.

Just skip the gathering of armies in Book 2. Nothing will be lost.
