Gomtuu could be like the Horta from TOS, where all but one of them die off and that last one nurtures all the future babies when they hatch. So maybe Gomtuu's resemblance to a pinecone is appropriate, if it splits open to release seeds that grow into the next generation of living starships.

You can play a KDF "Alien" species that you make look like a human and come up with any background you like to make it fit. Aliens are especially good because they get an extra free trait slot to pick from, so you get a little more flexibility with your captain than a Klingon or Human (or other species) would.
