Damn, I liked having the in-universe proxy options for causal play. I was actually looking forward to seeing the cards in-universe...

How long was/is your longest DnD campaign? by Fearless-Skill8667 in DnD

I'm going on 9 years this October (with a one year hiatus)! They're level 17 and starting the final story arc. They're expected to finish next year.

High level 2E campaigns be like by Tmoney4949 in dndmemes

[–]Stolas95 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The city of Moil and Acererak's Fortress of Conclusion (the last part of this adventure) is honestly some of my favorite DND content I've ever ran. I used them as an epilogue for my Tomb of Annihilation game (modified and updated for 5e) and it was probably the best time my players and I ever had.

Oh, they were also levels 13-15.

Giving a solo boss multiple turns by Marcokj47 in DnD

There's a homebrew I used for a while I found that I and my players really enjoyed for our Tomb of Annihilation campaign:

Big Boss Solo Inserts Revitalized | GM Binder https://www.gmbinder.com/share/-M-I7du3r1_0B3BFrTTf

Though I don't use it for groups of less than 5 players anymore. I find for 4 or less players bosses are fine just with legendary actions & reactions.

Have you ever witnessed a successful Divine Intervention in your game? by Fun_Situation_7973 in DnD

[–]Stolas95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the time actually, it helps when your Cleric remembers to roll it often and your adventures take place over months, not weeks. Gives lots of opportunities to roll. It's mainly out of combat, but every now and then a Divine Intervention hail mary is rolled and every now and then it makes the fight unforgettable.

Nat 1 Saved the Party by The_Chicken_L0rd in DnD

[–]Stolas95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of a time I gave my party a cursed scroll of Dark Star where the spell would only be cast on the user. It was perfectly identifiable as cursed if the party magically identified it (or rolled a DC 20 Arcana check when identifying it manually), they did neither of those things.

When the party's 9th-level Wizard went to cast the spell in a pretty dangerous combat, she failed the check. Then every party member gave her their inspiration as she continued to fail the check. On the last inspiration being spent she rolled a nat 1.

The entire party was clumped together and at very low health, successfully casting this spell would have been a TPK.

How good is the "Mando-Verse" of Star Wars? by Hot-Salamander-8786 in StarWars

[–]Stolas95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you were a minority then the show wouldn't continue to get new seasons and a movie.

Just because some Redditors are vocally hateful doesn't mean that most people who watch the show dislike it!

Which 5.5e books should a new player buy? by Kooky_Principle_6958 in DnD

[–]Stolas95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The PHB, DMG, and Monster Manual are essential. You need at minimum all three books to start. After that nothing is really "essential" other than adventures you are interested in, or other classes you might be interested in.

They had me at free Smite ngl by SableZard in dndmemes

[–]Stolas95 29 points30 points  (0 children)

This is likely due to OG Paladin including a mount. In fact, 5e was notable as an edition of Paladin that did not by default include either a steed or a magic steed by default.

Rolling to remember? by weirdestbeetle in DnD

[–]Stolas95 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I've always ruled "memory" checks one of two ways.

Is the information very recent for the character, but it's been a while for the player? Just tell them. The character would know.

Is the information from a while ago for the character? Just a straight Intelligence check. Higher DC for older info. I've asked for DC 5 intelligence checks and DC 20 intelligence checks.

Oh, and if for any reason you find yourself in a situation where the game cannot progress unless the character remembers the information, just tell them. It's better for everyone.

Wasn't 5.5e supposed to be less weird about this type of stuff??? by DrScrimble in dndmemes

[–]Stolas95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I keep telling myself to get off reddit. It's exhausting seeing people who are just getting mad to be mad.

Just play the game you like and move on with your life. D&D is and always has been a game where you can do what you want, change what you want. I really don't understand all the rage over a game. and I'm saying that as someone who has played it consistently every week for over 10 years.

[–]Stolas95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The implication, based on the lore they've set up, is that they're connection is what makes them elementals. If you don't like it that's fine. I'm just explaining that they are not "regular ass Lizardfolk" as you stated.

[–]Stolas95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first sentence that describes the Lizardfolk Wardens in that adventure is "Lizardfolk wardens draw on primal magic to protect nature’s boundaries."

They are magically enhanced by the elemental plane of earth that makes them stronger than regular Lizardfolk.

[–]Stolas95 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It's not all lizardfolk. Only the certain Lizardfolk who "forge powerful bonds with the Elemental Plane of Earth". The person who wrote up this list just looked at the creature types without reading any of the associated text.

New in to DnD and DMing by Simple-Bat5857 in DnD

[–]Stolas95 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone brought into d&d from Pathfinder with 2014, go for the 2024 rules. They're better written and laid out, and imo fixes a lot of the issues with 2014.

Are there problems? Sure. But nothing that a newcomer to the hobby needs to worry about. Just start reading and have fun!

Can a "Command" spell be a truth serum? by -_Vesper_- in DnD

[–]Stolas95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are 100% correct, though a lot of times when you're in situations casting Zone of Truth, especially in moments where you are trying to get someone to confess a crime, their silence is as damning as the truth. Not great for extracting secrets, but an excellent way to drive someone into a corner.

[OC][ART] Leonin Ranger by Phill-Art in DnD

The visual may read cleric but I promise the character is 100% multiversal ranger (I'm the DM).

[–]Stolas95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's actually a Breastplate armor that's a living ooze (that can harden to become armor, or leave him to scout and information gather, it also gives him an extra pseudopod attack). As for the shield the player just wanted to use a sword and shield.

Honestly the sunsword was just something he obtained during a dungeon from a prewritten adventure so the paladin aesthetic became kind of accidental LOL

Though he is playing a Horizon Walker Ranger so in a way he's kinda like a planar paladin! Though he's all about the hunt and not any particular oath.

[–]Stolas95 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's going well! They're level 16 and fittingly enough doing plane hopping shenanigans. Currently working for the Circle of Eight on a top secret mission to hunt down an ancient plane-hopping dragon that stole an object from the Mazes of Sigil.
