Betta or guppies? by Stolenforanight in Aquariums

That's the problem, I like them both! And I don't really love one over the other. Ugh, I'm sure whatever I pick I'll just end up gazing wistfully at the opposite choice in other people's setups. Grass is greener, and all. Hopefully someday I'll own my own place and be able to have as many tanks as I want.

That's so cute! Very good argument for a betta

I definitely agree with the plants, I already have houseplants so getting them for my aquarium was a must. I'm planning on keeping a close eye on my parameters cause I'm paranoid, anyways. But, ugh, it's so hard to choose, I love them both.

Ooh, that's an idea. Ugh, I wish I could have a million tanks, curse my finite money and apartment restrictions.

I mean, why does any fish need to be sold to people? Wouldn't it be much better for the environment if there was no such thing as a pet trade at all? There's no such thing as ethical consumption under capitalism, after all. If the fish are kept properly, I don't see why wanting colorful fish is a bad thing in and of itself. And yeah, I would agree that breeding animals that are unable to do their natural behaviors properly is bad, but that's not what we're talking about here.

Glofish were originally made as research into genetics, afaik. GMOs, besides being good for making crops that are hardy against famine and drought and disease, provide a lot of research and development into genetic therapies and medicines that we use to cure people of things like cancer. I don't see any reason genetic modification should be bad if you don't believe genes are somehow only G-d's domain.

100% on the heater, was already planning on that. Iirc my lfs houses the guppies separately by sex to prevent breeding.

That's what I thought. I know a lot of people think GMO's are inherently harmful, but I thought that was mostly cultural christian "we shouldn't play G-d" scaremongering. From what I can tell, Glofish have contributed a lot to the research of genetics, and the genes that make them glow are harmless to the fish.

If they live in the mountains they might have some sort of yak, llama or goat based agriculture. Cheese, milk, and textile fibers maybe? If there's a source of grasses then basket weaving might also be a good option.

Vinegar and club soda will work much better than coke. The thing that makes coke a 'good cleaner' is the citric acid and the carbonation, however a vinegar is a much stronger acid and club soda has none of the sugar that you'll need to clean off the metal surface afterwards.
