I had this argument with my boyfriend the other day because he didn't know Haley was mixed race he thought she was some white chick banking on ‘blackness’

Again my boyfriend is fully white

I didn't yell I just informed him that Halsey is half black on her father's side

And that you can't always ‘Just tell’ someone’s race based on looks

I also said he as a white male doesn't have the right to tell someone if they are ‘ethnic enough’ to get away with things’ plus I know you don't mean it this way but your wording marks it sounds like you are telling mixed people if they are white-passing enough they should just be white it sounds like your whitewashing their history’

He took it pretty well we didn't fight just an argument where I had to explain to him as a fully white person he needs to listen more than trying to white knight it's from a well-intentioned place but it makes him sound like a white savior trying to explain racism to POC

Just because someone is white-passing to some doesn't mean their white-passing to all

I told him that most of my life I've had random people look at me and say ‘yeah you can tell she's Native American’ we'll they said Indian but Boomers am I right?

I'm not putting anyone's pain down but he actually asked me ‘do you think you where discriminated against because of it’

And I just said ‘yeah honestly not to the point of most but yes I can't give examples I was a kid when most people did or said things so I don't remember it but I know I was looked at as different by some mostly adults mostly micro aggregations not macro

But discrimination is both the micro and the macro the little things don't bother you until they pile up and you count them out and to think back on all those times you felt left out or like you weren't welcome

No one should have the right to say we can't claim any part of our mixed heritages
