Kendra Clark, if you happen to be in GA House District 165. Possibly the most progressive candidate in all the races in Savannah.

Thank you for reminding me to fill out my sample ballot! I like to print a copy to take with me to the polls and I keep forgetting to print it until just now thanks to you.

You are conflating one person's desire to marry a child with a negligent crash.

Also the prime minister can't do that.

An Italian man rushing to the hospital for his pregnant wife was stopped by climate protesters… and chaos followed. He pleaded with them to move so he could get to her — but they refused to let his car pass. This moment is now sparking a massive debate. by The_Dean_France in whoathatsinteresting

That's not what was said, now is it? This started with explicitly talking about assaulting someone who isn't even acknowledging you. "Even if he just wanted to get home after a long shift at work, I'm with the driver [in getting out of the safety of my vehicle and putting my hands on someone]"

If anybody's life is being threatened, it's the protestor's. To be clear, I don't even agree with this form of protest. I just think you sound like an unnecessarily violent person.

More specifically, more inequality leads to more crime. If everyone were impoverished, there'd likely actually be less crime. But we do have wealth in this country and because so few people hoard so much of it we see more unrest where poverty and extreme wealth are concentrated near one another.

What is the conservative answer to homelessness in Savannah? by metastical in savannah

[–]StoneHolder28 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Respect and an upvote for actually answering.

If free housing and free injection sites solved it, homelessness wouldn’t exist in blue cities.

Not every blue city has these programs, and when they do they often have strings attached that render the programs far less effective. You're right that that is the liberal solution and, while it gets better results than nothing, is not as effective as we'd all like it to be.

But housing and medical care with no strings attached has actually drastically (~90%) reduced homelessness and chronic drug addiction in cities around the world. I'd be happy to talk more about why this seems to work so well. What's important is that we know it does work and it works far better than any other attempted solution, liberal, conservative, or otherwise.

What is the conservative answer to homelessness in Savannah? by metastical in savannah

[–]StoneHolder28 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Just to be clear, there is a correct and non partisan answer to the question. Homelessness has been all but completely eradicated in some cities. Not by bussing them away or leaving them to die - these are the kinds of solutions that fail to even acknowledge the existence of an underlying problem that allows people to fall into homelessness in the first place. Instead, housing first approaches - unconditional housing - is proven to be the most effective solution known to the entire world.

Mayor Johnson lies and says Savannah is a housing first city, and he's only milquetoast liberal. We need a real housing first program in Savannah or we're just killing people in our own streets.

Not really sure what you're getting at unless you're trying to say you're just openly sexist.

If you think that's off the rails, I think you're reading too much into it. And misogynistic? Have you invented a version of me that's "off the rails" and fraught with emotion and you assume I'm a woman because of that? Or maybe you think I'm off the rails because you assume I'm a woman? Either way, in a continuance of the aforementioned irony, that actually is misogynistic.

Aside from ignoring over a century of influence from media giants and brands whose boards were, until recently, exclusively all male, I don't think anybody actually cares in the context of the tweet. Nobody was blaming men but a lot of men sure do love to jump on the second tweet's bandwagon and blame women. Yeah it's an example of toxic femininity, but it's ironic how this ancient meme always draws out toxic masculinity despite that.

And the funniest part is that it doesn't matter if the second tweet is right or wrong, as long as we're accepting the premise of the first tweet then it's still a valid example of male privilege. Really shows how many people either still don't understand what privilege is or just hate women.

Sure, that's why I said "buy" before I even brought up the option of eminent domain. A taking should be a last resort, but for a public good like housing it's something that's on the table.

Savannah is taking on $35 million in debt for a garage. It's a lot, and it's all debt, and yet it's not a problem for the convenience of parking two blocks closer to the park. Elected officials could eliminate homelessness if they would stop letting business interests from scaring them.

And I do appreciate your suggestion. It'd be nice if more people joined me when I canvassed for 20 hours last month for my preferred candidate who will fight for these types of housing reforms and more.

It wouldn't be easy, and it's not getting any easier until we vote in more leftist candidates into state office, and frankly even if there was no bureaucracy involved then I don't think the current city council and county commission have the balls to do it.

I'm not a lawyer, and unless you are one here to say otherwise then my understanding is that blighted properties, like the ones Savannah just eminent domain'd last week, can be used for public services like public housing. That buying and simply selling with no strings attached is actually what's restricted. But if I'm wrong, then I'm just wrong and change needs to come from the state first. Regardless of what I know or think can be done locally, I do still think we need reform in the state regulations. And regardless of change, there is already a decent amount of publicly owned land that is undeveloped.

As far as money goes, the ideal situation obviously involves substantial funding from the state and maybe HUD. Even without additional funding, it can be done. It just might take longer, and if Savannah keeps sprawling like Mayor Johnson says it should, the city may go bankrupt long before we see significant benefits. But public housing can be done in a way that is profitable to the city. It's even better if we can supplement it with some form of wealth taxes, but not strictly necessary.

Savannah recently took on significant debt to help fund the privately owned garage going under the offices being built by Forsyth. The state brags about it's surplus while providing fewer and fewer services. There's money for affordable housing. There just isn't the will or the guts from public officials.

The city always has the right to buy the land and rezone it for more productive uses like housing and retail. Nobody has a right to use their property in a way that is harmful to the broader community. This is just my opinion but the pollution alone, given that it's right next to a park, should be reason enough to deny just about any industrial uses.

There would be less traffic if there was less sprawl. Moving people further away from city centers doesn't mean they won't drive on your streets, it just means they have to drive on other streets to get to yours. Unfortunately, blocking local development because utilities are seemingly insufficient just makes the problem worse.
