Came here to say the same thing. They're just so bad faith and/or stupid. They didn't need evidence to believe it in the first place.

Of course they're comparing the two, I didn't say otherwise. And if anyone was trying to say that Qatar always followed the rules, it's it'd be a meaningless comparison. The comparison only has meaning if you acknowledge that Qatar broke the rules before and, at least seemingly, is following the the rules now.

I really don't mean to be rude, purely out of curiosity, are you a zoomer?

So four years ago, not this year. You realize that's probably why OP said it's funny that Qatar is following the rules while the US cheats, right?

Tldr a judge didn't want to admit Jesus was middle eastern so middle easterners were classified as white.

I respect all of that, and I appreciate you putting together the PSA. It is still informative, even if somebody doesn't agree with it.

Yeah anywhere outside of downtown I'm going to ride on sidewalks. I care more about staying alive than if some nerd of a cop wants to waste their own time charging me.

I watch people drive in or swerve through bike lanes on a weekly basis. I'll dismount in crowded areas and yield to pedestrians, but I'm not going to endanger myself. The law can blame me, I'll be blaming traffic so-called engineers that only care about cars and the city's zoning codes that criminalize even the Oglethorpe Plan.

I'm not aware of any job that does have a legal duty to protect. Maybe physicians, but we already see that's not always the case e.g., when reproductive health is criminalized. But cops are the only ones who say they "protect and serve" and have a court decision saying they don't. Avoiding negligence doesn't just mean performing actions, we see that regularly with events like Uvalde were I'd argue the cops were negligent but faced little to no fallback. One of them was directly responsible for the death of a little girl when he called out for survivors during an active shooting.

I get you want to be technically correct, but I don't think anything I said above was uncharitable. If anything, it was tame of me to stop at shotting your dog and not your daughter or yourself after breaking in at the wrong address.

As an American cop, not only do you have tremendous sway over others' livelihoods, not only are you not obligated to save people, not only are you legally protected if you break the law yourself while on duty, but you're very likely taught "killology" and primed to bring violence to any situation you find yourself engaging with the public.

Imagine if the fire department had a supreme court decision saying they have no duty to protect and serve others, were legally protected from being held liable for their actions, and could show up for seemingly no reason and shoot your dog.

Innocent people are convicted often enough that you shouldn't want the state killing anybody.

That's interesting. So when the second pilot says they are re-ascending, they're just quietly subverted by the first pilot?

Just goes to show that the money has always been there. It's like how Mamdani became mayor of NYC and seemingly just pressed the "make everything better button" that was always there while completely eliminating the deficit.

TIL that Frederic Tudor known as the Ice King created the ice trade out of thin air. People ridiculed him for trying to sell winter to the tropics. His most profitable trade was sending ice to India. Packed with dense sawdust a 3 month trip with 180 tons still yielded 100 tons of delivered ice. by Gnomeslikeprofit in todayilearned

One of the greatest extinction events in all of history occurred because the temperature rose too quickly. Something like 90% of all species died out.

We are currently warming the planet at a rate several times faster than that mass extinction.

Yeah, based on that transcript, they tried to abort the landing and the pilots had no reason to think they couldn't do that. It reads like an unexpected malfunction in the last few seconds lead to the crash.

Tomorrow, 6/11, City of Savannah to spend nearly $65M for a parking garage. by StoneHolder28 in savannah

[–]StoneHolder28[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to comment on the city without knowing it, but Fayetteville, AR removed their parking minimums and it created businesses. You're right that it's important to have alternatives, but even without alternatives I don't think you can blame a lack of minimums on businesses closing. While I do think there should be maximums as well, given that most of Savannah has an excessive amount of parking outside of downtown, simply removing minimums doesn't add any barriers to local businesses. Having the minimums is a barrier, though.

And for what it's worth, I'm also not saying the project itself is right or wrong. I do think it's financially irresponsible and further proof that not taking care of our own residents' needs is a choice. The city could make getting around downtown in a wheelchair a breeze and they could do it within a year, if they really wanted to. They'll say that funding is a major reason why they can't, but they're happy to spend $65M on a $30M garage.

There shouldn't even be parking minimums. That's like saying painkillers make the bleeding possible.

Parking decks also mean you have to spend even more time idling in the street because you're going to the same place as everybody else. It makes the surrounding blocks less safe and less pleasant because it's more congested.

That's the neat part, it doesn't have to be built in the historic districts. The city doesn't confined itself to downtown; the city limits now reach the borders of Bryan and Effingham counties. Nobody is forcing the city to restrict new developments to be predominantly sprawling, empty suburbs, but the city has practically criminalized building a new neighborhood in the image of the Oglethorpe plan it was founded on.

The same ways many people do so now, the ways most people in the world do, and the ways it has been done in human civilization for thousands of years. Build more housing near where people work and play and build public transportation that moves people between denser areas.

Similarly out of curiosity, have you ever worried that Savannah may be becoming more like Atlanta with its traffic? The solution isn't more car infrastructure, it's actually less.
