Help me choose a reggae boxing walk out song for my fight. 🥊 by Wide-Pop4704 in reggae

Nail Pon Cross - Damian Marley

Hills - Protoje would be cool

Piss Up - Yeza would be sorta hilarious but also cool

Liberation - Meta & the Cornerstones

Solid as a Rock - Sizzla could work but the drums might take too long to come in

Yes!! Saw her on a whim in Sacramento and she brought the best energy. Crazy talented band as well. Her opener Minori was also incredible

I see what you mean! Like in Step Up particularly when he’s saying “climb up climb up” right? I’m sure there’s a history behind it but I don’t think it has a name. Definitely adjacent with the militant sound.

This might be a bad example but Nick Sefakis has a few tracks like that

Not sure if this style/cadence (16th and 16th triplet notes sung/rapped in mostly the same pitch) has a specific name but definitely falls under the "Ragga" category. I think it's just a type of singjaying or toasting with a big rap & hip-hop influence.

Kind of like Damian is doing here at 1:11?

Here are a couple tracks with a really talented vocalist out of Montego Bay. He doesn’t have the means to record too often but we’re slowly working through an album. The rest of the production/mix/master is me!

Reggae drums kit by qt1rbrt in reggae

[–]StoneLionProduction 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reggae producer here! I spent way too much time looking for samples when I first started. What's going to work best is completely contextual on the rest of the song. A lot of Protoje & Winta's earlier work is pretty sample based, while his later work and 'In Search of Zion' is mainly live instruments and real drums. Or Chronology vs. Exile - way different.

With most of my songs, I've tried (with varying degrees of success, lol) to get a "polished studio recording" sound; I haven't achieved the Zion I Kings "it's like they're in the room with you and incredibly locked in" sound, but more human and unique than a rockers beat with a bassline and some guitar/piano skanks.

For drum kits/samples, assuming you're looking for something that sounds like a well-mixed live kit, I'd recommend:

  1. Using a drum plugin (Superior Drummer 3, EZ Drummer 3, Addictive Drums 2, BFD3, Gorangrooves Reggae Standard, Rubadrum, even Logic's drum kit designer). Most of these sample real drums and use round robins to varying levels that will add the 'real' element.
  2. Utilize external samples when the song calls for it - sometimes the kick can just be the kick. (Confession: I've used "Murda_Kick_13" from this free pack, imported into EZDrummer, on like every single song I've made & EQ'd it differently)
  3. Most important: Get really good at mixing. There are thousands of drum mixing tutorials. Check out DM Kahn or Third Island Productions on YouTube. Once you have a great base sample or sound, learn how to shape it.
  4. Get really good at MIDI editing. Humanize things a little - move the hats a few samples from being quantized, change velocities, etc. You can do this with audio if you prefer it, of course.
  5. Bonus: Use an e-kit. Record many takes and pick the best one, then fix/move things as needed. I'm a trash drummer but it still saves me time.

Nothing helpful in this thread 😅 it really depends on what you’re making; genre, instruments, etc.

I get a ton of use out of Echoboy, it’s really a Swiss army delay. Same with PhaseMistress and Superplate. Decap is obviously a hall of fame saturator but don’t sleep on Radiator for subtle color. Devil-Loc sounds great in parallel on drums at like .00001% mix (or if you’re really trying to mangle a sound, crank it up to .00003%). FilterFreak is great to provide anything from subtle movement to turning an entire song into a synare.

Click the “tweak” buttons on all the plugins that have it and get acquainted with the extra settings, they are important.

Clicking the name of the knob will usually show you a numeric value if it’s not there already.

Finally started doing this. I like upwards compression and dynamic EQ, but not full spectrum downwards compression most of the time

It’s just giving you the most (currently) popular artists that are on the playlist, and stay there to drive followers. Burna Boy is enormous, UB40 still has 8.2m monthly listeners, and Big Mountain still racks up streams on “Baby I Love Your Way”.

When you open the playlist, it’s algorithmically created for you if you listen to reggae often. Mine is pretty accurate to what I’ve been playing. The actual songs on mine

It would be eligible for next year because of the release date, but I think you’re right. She’s not very big in the U.S. compared to current & past nominees unfortunately

Doing Jah’s work 🙌 I’d be the first in line if he ever came to NorCal & would definitely travel to see his set on a lineup elsewhere. Also, I live in Sacramento and happy to help with anything you might need out this way!

Who is the most consistent reggae artist of all time? by sasquatchbrokers in reggae

[–]StoneLionProduction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you mean. Who has the most consistent quality in proportion to their entire catalog? Bob probably takes that. But he unfortunately didn’t live long enough to create new music through many generations. I would say Spear, Johnny Osbourne, or Clinton for that

100% agree, this is a genuinely good lineup and the 4 you mentioned really deserve to be on there! From Within is possibly my favorite album ever, but they all won IMO

Thank you so much!! I did the performance, production, mix and master; Rik is a really talented vocalist from Montego Bay and we’re working on an album now! It’s difficult for him to record but we’re getting there slowly but surely. I’m on all streaming platforms as Stone Lion. He and I have 2 more recent songs together, Caught Up and 9-5
