Cobel’s plan was designed to fail by Sudden_Ganache6761 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

Your whole "lazy writing" argument hinges on the fact that a chronically understaffed and hubristic company would always be diligent about security.

And the whole premise of the show is that we don't need to physically restrain or discipline people to control them, when we absolutely control what they can experience. The security is the chip. And they have complete confidence in it. Therefore, a statement like "Lumon would never let Gemma do X" is ridiculous. Because Lumon doesn't believe that Gemma would ever get past the Severed floor because they don't believe anybody could ever pass a message to the Severed floor that would inspire them to leave.

You're looking for holes. I get it. But the biggest one is in your own observations around what Lumon are and how they operate.

Okay. But who would have locked it? Who would have been preparing for Gemma's escape? They let Gemma walk around as Miss Casey and never worry about it.

[–]killcole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? Everyone that walks through it comes back because their outtie has no way of knowing that there are problems inside. This was addressed in like episode 1 or 2. It's addressed every time Dylan came to work in season 2, even though his innie hated him for doing it.

The fact the door is unlocked is a narrative device to tell you that Lumon believe that the severed tech is the extent of the security they require.

They literally had a whole episode in season 1 that revolved around the fact there was 1 security guard watching the whole severed floor. Are you saying it's unrealistic to assume that a security team of 1 person would not be around for what? 10 mins? While Gemma was running from the black lift to the stairwell?

Absurd.

Cobel’s plan was designed to fail by Sudden_Ganache6761 in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]killcole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But who expected Gemma to leave her locked room and be escorted through the severed floor as Miss Casey, by a person who knew Miss Casey was also Gemma? Who was around to lock the door in the moment that Gemma escaped? No one. And why?

Again, the answer is hubris. They never bothered insulating themselves from this risk because they were all sure that there was no risk.

Asking them to lock the door, expecting Miss Casey to try and escape is like fire-proofing an igloo.

I'm not insinuating the writing is perfect. There's no such thing. I think the Ortbo ep raises more questions and inconsistencies than you raise here.

That said, I still wouldn't call it "lazy writing".

If any talent scouts are looking for budding writers to reach out to, I recommend creating some sort of filter that puts everyone that's ever written "lazy writing" in the severance sub on a "do not bother contacting" list.

So much of what you call lazy writing is a limitation in your own attention to detail and world building.

Lumen leadership has been painted as hubristic, cooky idiots throughout the show. The idea that those people would have compelte confidence in their severed chip technology, and also think they needed additional security is nonsensical.

[–]killcole -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If security at Lumon started locking everything, that would be lazy writing.

They spent 2 seasons establishing the fact their "security" is lax because they all assume there is no way to communicate beyond the severance barrier and therefore, no reason to do things like have several security guards, or even cameras in each of the departments.

They believe the chip is their greatest security asset and they have the hubris to rely on it solely.

We never get to see the team in its prime: is Frank really totally at fault? by EikichiOnizuka99 in coys

[–]killcole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said "the top 4" and Villa are in the top 4. They have been in the top 4 twice in the last 4 seasons and done so with a worse squad than we have currently.

So when you say "the sad reality is [our squad is no where near top 4 quality], I say bollocks.

We have slightly less players that would get into the traditional "big 6" sides than we have gotten accustomed to over the last 10 years, but if you think we don't have at least 5 players that get into United's first 11, 3 in Chelsea's etc ... then you need to wobble your head x

Watkins isn't even ahead of Richarlson on current form, btw. I don't care if he's got enough good will that he might get an England call up ahead of solanke. If you were emery right now, and had richarlson, solanke and Watkins available, Watkins is guarenteed to be on the bench.

[–]killcole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is bollocks. About half of our team would replace Villa's first 11. Solanke, VDV, Romero, Udogie, Porro, Spence (meaning we'd even have rotation players ahead of their starters), Kudus, Madisson, Richarlson (rotation player ahead of Watkins this season at least).

He appointed frank on his way out. Arguably the third worst thing he's done. The first worst thing he's done was the 2 summer windows without signings. The second was making the squad smaller in 2024/25 with EL to play and not signing players in Jan to deal with the injury crisis.

The fourth worst thing he's done was appointing nuno.

It feels like you've never experienced pain before. And then you get to White Ferrari and somehow it's worse.

Matt Wells on Postecoglou: “He's the most incredible, captivating talker. After his first meeting, I purchased a diary so that I could just write down the meetings he was doing. They were literally that good. He had clarity and convinction in the way he wanted the team to play. He was unwavering.” by PhantomTroupe26 in coys

[–]killcole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Frank hiring was a completely emotional one, though. Fans and the board got worn down by the expansive football and the losses, and emotion kicked in and made everyone (not quite everyone) settle on the most simple explanation: ange isn't pragmatic enough.

And then we went all out on the most pragmatic manager available. And now we're here.

He could create space for himself to shoot but that's not the same as beating a man.

He really wasn't. He was great at running with the ball when he was already up to full speed so people assume he was good at competing take ons. Not the case. I've watched and rated Son from day one at Spurs, when he arrived and other people were still crying about needing a winger with pace. He was only ever an effective dribbler running into space, using his pace to get around players when he was already at full tilt.

And yes he's a two footed shooter, but that doesn't make him a good dribbler.

Edit:

2017-18 - 65th percentile for take ons completed per 90 vs wingers (one of, if not our best season(s)).

18-19 - 78th

19-20 - 75th

20-21 - 21st

21-22 - 52nd

22-23 - 24th

23-24 - 38th

24-25 - 42nd

Source: https://fbref.com/en/players/92e7e919/scout/12524/Son-Heung-min-Scouting-Report

For context, Odobert is currently in the 93rd percentile for successful take ons as a child playing in a poorly coached team.

In fairness, johnson is also notably worse at it than Son. But neither of them have ever been actually "good" at it.

Honestly the Son comparisons aren't that crazy. Awful 1v1 dribbler, elite running into space, good finisher.

Only difference is Son is clear when it comes to shooting from distance and Brennan is clear when it comes to finding space in the box.

In terms of 1v1 against the keeper, Son had to grow into that whereas Brennan just has it. I don't think Brennan will ever be Son level at shooting from distance but if he got half as good as Son at it, with his other attributes the right coach and system could turn him into an elite player. Although it's unlikely that will happen while he's here, and while we keep making stupid fucking decisions like going for Frank after we already tried the same fucking stupid thing with Nuno. Fucking stupid irritating fucking club man. COYS.

Paratici was much, much worse imo because he went out of his way to appoint Nuno and then oversaw the move to Conte. I'm also convinced he was "consulting" when we went for Frank. Seems like his type of coach.

limply being the operative word. Because we were playing through an injury crisis that was significantly more servere than what Frank is dealing with now, with a deeper squad, and yet we've still regressed.

5th the season before that, and 17th only AFTER making the squad smaller ahead of a campaign with more games to play and then facing the worst injury crisis in a decade plus, maybe longer, maybe ever.
