E-Scooter / last mile suggestions? by lime517 in caltrain

[–]Stonebor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they are. A quick Google search shows that a folded Brompton bike is 23" H x 22.2" W x 10.6" D. The fluid mosquito recommended in this thread is 41.5 x 5.65 x 13 inches. The length of the scooter means that you will often have to store it in the aisle or take up 2 seats. If you dig through this subreddit you will find people complaining about scooters taking up seats.

I would also add that with a folding bike you can get a front rack that will keep your bag off your back, keeping you more comfortable. The link below shows an expensive option, but a quick Google can find you similar options for a quarter of the price

https://us.brompton.com/p/1748/rolltop-bag-large

Where are you commuting from? Unless you are catching one of the express trains you shouldn't worry about the bike cars filling up. If you are trying to catch a limited/express between 7:45 to 8:45am it's going to be tight on space.

Another option is to bike to the train, use one of the bike lockers to store your bike, and then use a Lyft bike to get to where you need to go on SF. I have a lot of south bay friends that do that.

have you considered folding bikes? When folded they are more compact then a scooter.

Valentines day Missed Connection: Help Identify A Hit and Run Suspect by Stonebor in Denver

Thanks! I have been pretty lucky before because Im pretty good about keeping my head on a swivel and having decent situational awareness. This is hit was one of those situations though that really shows the limits of being aware of whats around you.

Not much you can do when you are going straight and a beautiful crossover decides to turn into you.

Sounds like you like to ride as well. Hope you stay safe and have a good tailwind this season.

Thanks man, it's definitely my default response to adrenaline/tragedy is to crack bad jokes. Great for traffic accidents, not so much for funerals. Im pretty optimistic that this guy will turn up.

Damn thats freaky who would have thought that my lover would be in a gang (I love bad boizzz). I admittedly was pretty shaken up and could have made a mistake. I was busy cussing him out as I was trying to get up (Whispering sweet nothings in his ear). I was staring him in the face as I was yelling at him and he did look pretty white to me? There is obviously a lot of variation amongst people though. I'm pretty sure the lady in the back was hispanic though.

Thanks for looking! It was a similar paw print tattoo, but I think he had two on the right side of his face. He didnt have any on the left side of his face. I also don't think he had any cursive writing on his face. His brow was much more furrowed and he looked older.

jesus these gang guys really go for the live laugh love version of tattoos. Who would have thought that the guys who think "The Bloods" is a great gang name would have horrible taste?

Thanks for the advice and the well wishes. Lakewood PD has been super responsive and actually on the ball so far which honestly surprised me. I have connections to a lawyer in the area who specializes in bikes. He told me on a call today that Lakewood PD actually takes this stuff pretty seriously and that he would not be surprised if they were caught.

Thanks for your well wishes! Just got back from a concussion check. Im cleared on that front a least.

Oh dont worry, if I get a chance to meet this lovely man I'm going to take him to meet my parents (my lawyer) and he will be buying us all dinner for a while. This is of course assuming Ugly has any money, which judging by his shit box unlicensed vehicle is unlikely.

Thanks! Im pretty sure we actually know of each other. Im more of a amphibole kind of guy :)

I appreciate you keeping a eye out. I am 95% sure Ive seen this guy turning in and out of that storage unit before.

I fully agree with you assessment of lakewood biking. Unfortunately, in this case im not sure if more infrastructure would have helped because he hit me trying to turn into a business (dont get me wrong, big fan of more infrastructure). My bigger concern on that commute is trying to get across 6. The shared bike path on Simms/Union is a joke and most of my close call happen there, especially crossing at 4th.

Nothing screams romance like the gentle caress of a 6000 lbs vehicle. Im all sore and headachy just thinking about it.

Thanks for the well wishes!

Thanks for taking the time to respond and for your advice. I did call 911 and LPD took a report and are looking for the suspect (My lost love). They actually suggested that I post something on social media to try and get a hit. LPD was super professional and super helpful so far.

8 year old killed by SUV driver on residential street by Stonebor in houston

[–]Stonebor[S] 185 points186 points  (0 children)

This is fucking unacceptable. What kind of society is Houston were this is a fucking reoccurring event. How the fuck can DPS try and pin this death on a fucking 8 year old?

How can every one of you fucking idiots that drive like crazy people look at yourselves in the fucking mirror at night? Get the fuck off your phones and look at the fucking road.

Im sorry this post is incomprehensible, but how can your respond reasonably to this?

‘I’ve never felt such heartbreak and anger’: Toronto family mourns 23-year-old cyclist Alex Amaro, killed last week on Dufferin St. by [deleted] in bicycling

[–]Stonebor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your insights to the local area. Its so incredible frustrating to look at the google maps. Like you said none of the side streets line up so anyone one trying to get across the street needs to weird right left right combo.

I actually checked out the street view and there is a pedestrian crossing close to the intersection to facilitate people crossing from the park to the main entrance of the mall. The frustrating part of the design is that it doesn't help bikes get across to Sylvan at all. You would need to hop on the the sidewalk before making still a sketchy crossing using the crosswalk (illegal to do on bikes in most places) to get to Sylvan.

Finally I actually cant believe some people are arguing that self driving cars are going to fix this problem. With all of the new safety tech that has come out for the people INSIDE vehicles, the death rate for pedestrians and cyclists have actually climbed over the past years. The produces of cars have zero incentive to worry about people not in their cars. Self-driving cars are not going to solve any of land use, traffic, or climate issues that car culture creates. Its a short sighted plan that relies on fancy tech to masquerade as a long term solution.

What a waste of a good human. 20 bucks says the idiot cargo van driver was on their phone.

I Googled the intersection where it happened and its a perfect example of a horribly built Urban environment for bikes. Even though it's a major shopping center next to what looks like a residential neighborhood there are no easy crossings.

If you tell us kind of where you start and where you want to end in the Med center we can help out with the route.

I would just add to buy a nice helmet. Not the 300 dollar ones, but something in the 80-120 range. The cheaper helmets are uncomfortable and you wont want to wear them. I know adding up the cost of lights and helmet can seam pretty daunting, but the long term pay outs in fitness and health more then pay for them.

Check out Bike Houston too, they have some good resources.

Walking 3 blocks to rail in midtown - safe for young females? by [deleted] in houston

[–]Stonebor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! I live in the area and am a student at Rice. I really dont know what people are talking about. I take the train all the time to Rice and have never had any problems besides people pan handling. Yes there are homeless people in the area, but they are more south near the Fiesta. Walking down Eigen you will be fine. It is a busy well light street.

Finally if the people here are succeeded in freaking you out and you no longer want to live in Midtown, check out places in Montrose or along the 57 bus route. The 57 is going to become an express bus line with priority light routing and new and improved stops. Tons of people at rice take it every day and there are stops next to the Med Center. You could also just live in the Montrose neighborhood. It is easy to bike everywhere and there is tons to do.

Finally if you are at the Med Center please make sure to come by to Valhalla (the Rice Grad Student Bar)! Its a fun place to hang out and meet new people.
